Episode 2: Where No One has gone before

Captain’s log: Stardate 58233.8 Ensign Rar-Traveler, who is a Cylon Raider, has made brief contact with a new alien race, known as the Vorlons. They were not willing to let him enter their ship nor travel further into their territory. But they did ask him to return with a diplomatic delegation. Hopefully this first contact will go better than the one with the salt vampires.

USS Enterprise: Recreation Room

Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace was not one to stick to formality. An example of this was her habit of playing Triad or Kal-Toh with her officers in the common recreation room.

“I see your 10 and raise you ten more,” said Starbuck as she looked at the colours of Grcic’s skin.

Her first officer was a Medeusan, and therefore didn’t wear clothing other than a hat, which served as a combination Communicator/Universal Translator/Tricorder. Hir native language was communicated by shifting colours of her skin. Which also meant s/he had to restrain hirself from giving visual tells. On the other hand, Grcic, like all Medeusans, was a telepath and it was a general agreement that telepaths not use their abilities to read their opponents minds when playing such games.

Because the different species had different mores and cold/heat tolerances, there were several uniform options available for members of Star Fleet. Some races, like the Medeusans, didn’t wear clothing at all other than their hats. But most races wore uniforms, at least when on duty. The Argos had brought uniforms that were a one-piece body suit that could double as an emergency space suit. It was black on the bottom half and red, gold or blue on the top half with rank pips on the collar. But to Colonial eyes, it looked like pajamas. So reaching into Star Fleet’s past, some more layers were added as an option. Many of the less cold-tolerant races treated the original uniforms as underwear and wore black pants and a coloured shirt with a wide collar so that their rank pips would be visible. A black jacket with rank stripes on the sleeves could be worn over it. Captain Thrace, as well as the Vulcans and Taquinians, chose to wear all three layers. The mini dress was also and option, that was popular with Cylon women and Thalosians of both genders, who would also wear jackets over it.

“I’m out!” Grumbled Doctor Leptus, who was a Tarquinian and so preferred to wear all three layers of uniform.

“You are bluffing,” accused Chief Engineer 23 of two, who had been a model Two Cylon, before joining the Borg. The Borg wore only the inner layer of uniform, with cut-outs to accommodate their implants. “We see your 20 and raise you 50.”

Their Triad game was interrupted by a whistle and the voice of the Science Officer, Stonn, who was currently acting as captain on the Bridge. “Yellow Alert. All Crew report to their stations”

“Frak! Looks like it’s back to work for us,” said Captain Thrace, as she threw down her cards and stood up.

“Better luck next time,” added Dr. Leptus as he headed to Sick Bey.

Commander Grcic followed hir Captain to the turbolift and barely made it in time.

“It’s probably Stonn being overly cautious,” offered Starbuck.

“Perhaps we have arrived earlier than expected?” Suggested Grcic.

They arrived at the Bridge, and the Vulcan Lieutenant Commander Stonn arose from the big chair to allow Starbuck to take his place. Once she was seated, the ship’s Councilor: Daimz moved to hir place to the Captain’s left and Commander Grcic stood with four tentacles on her right. Yeoman Smith stood a little in front of Grcic, halfway towards the navigator: Lieutenant Toma.

Councilor Daimz was an energy being who lived in a box equipped with a holoprojector that made it easier for people to relate to hir. Currently s/he was projecting the image of the top half of a male human. S/he was a more evolved version of a Medeusan and the members of hir race that were native to this universe regarded hir as a kind of deity.

Yeoman Smith was a Kobolian Human and she was wearing the mini-dress version of the Uniform.

Lieutenant Toma was a Medeusan and as s/he sat at hir post, s/he reached back with one tentacle to hold Yeoman Smith’s hand. For humans it would be an innocent gesture. But for Medeusans this was the equivalent of a kiss.

“Report.” Commanded Starbuck, as she settled into the big chair in the center of the bridge.

“We appear to have encountered an energy barrier,” reported Stonn, who had by now returned to his science station. “It encloses a large section on this arm of the galaxy and prevents us from traveling to the coordinates the Vorlons directed us to.”

“Analyse Mister Stonn,” commanded Starbuck.

“Sensors indicate a barrier, deflectors are unable to detect the barrier,” reported Stonn. “Negative energy, negative mass, no dark matter indicated. Dark energy is off the scale.”

“Could it be some sort of trap?” Asked Lieutenant Kalia, the Tarquinian Helmsman.

“I don’t think it poses any danger,” offered Councilor Daimz. “The Vorlons did, after all, invite us to meet them on the other side. It probably just marks the edge of their territory.”

“We’ll take it slowly,” agreed Starbuck. “Ahead, warp one.”

“Aye Captain, ahead warp factor one,” replied Kalia as he worked the console and set the ship in motion.

“Shields up!” Ordered Grcic.

“Shields at full power,” answered the Cylon Centurion Security Chief, Lieutenant Zoe Kalven. Kalven had her uniform painted onto her in the pattern of the inner uniforms, black on the bottom and gold on the top. Only her head was unpainted.

Slowly the ship approached the barrier at merely the speed of light. As they got closer, Toma called out the distances from the barrier. When they passed through the ship was shaken, Yeoman Smith was knocked from her feet. But fortunately Toma was there to catch her in hir tentacles. Several people gave off a momentary glow, most notably Daimz and Grcic.

“Report!” Commanded Starbuck.

“The warp core has cooled completely,” reported the Borg Communications Officer, 1 of 20. She had been a Talosian before she joined the Borg and thus was in constant contact with the Chief Engineer, who was also Borg. “We estimate it will take 15 minutes to restart it.”

Suddenly, Grcic’s skin colours began changing rapidly and his eyes gave off a silvery glow. Councilor Daimz switch moved over to hir and grabbed the 1st officer dragging hir towards the turbolift as s/he said:

“Captain, you need to confine all Medeusans to quarters. I will explain later.”

Just after the turbolift doors shut, Councilor Daimz saw that she had done the right things as the colours Grcic was displaying now were the Medeusan equivalent of moaning in ecstasy.

An hour later, Councilor Daimz had to explain hirself at a full staff meeting.

“I pulled hir off the Bridge because I could see that Commander Grcic was approaching climax,” explained Councilor Daimz. “When Medeusans experience ectastic states, the colours they display can affect less sexually mature species in a manner similar to what the sight of my true form has on people. I brought hir to hir quarters, where hir ecstasy was continuous and increasing until s/he shed hir mortal shell and became a being of pure energy like me. I have checked the other Medeusan Crew members, and although they all reported feelings of intense pleasure, none of them transformed, as Commander Grcic did.”

“So what happens to her now?” Asked Starbuck. “Can it be reversed?”

“Even if it could, s/he would not want it to be,” replied Daimz.

But we can’t let hir run around the ship like s/he is, causing mass insanity,” countered Doctor Leptus.

“This is really unknown territory,” added Daimz. “It has been thousands of years since my people ascended.”

“And none of the Medeusans that are native to this universe have ever done so before,” added Stonn

“I am uncertain how to help someone through this transition,” admitted Daimz.

“At the very least we should build hir a mobile box similar to the one Councilor Daimz uses so that Commander Grcic can regain hir mobility,” offered Stonn.

“Until then, s/he is to be confined to quarters with no visitors except from the approved races,” ordered Starbuck. “Has anyone else been affected?”

(My telepathy feels stronger) thought Daimz.

(That appears to be the case with all the telepaths onboard) thought 1 of 20. (In fact, on Talos we would not longer be considered ‘too telepathically weak’ to breed. We estimate that we are in the upper 10% of Talosian telepaths now. Perhaps even as powerful as the Talosian from the Argos Universe)

“Keep an eye on the other telepaths,” ordered Starbuck. “I don’t want anyone else to have adverse effects like Grcic did.”

“Aye Captain,” replied 1 of 20.

“For now, we’ll keep heading for the Vorlons,” stated Starbuck.

Captain’s log: Stardate 58234.9 We are approaching the coordinates where the Vorlons asked us to meet them. The ship is fully repaired and Commander Grcic has been given a mobile box fitted with a holoprojector, similar to the one Councilor Daimz uses and instructed in its’ use. S/he is still, for now, confined to quarters.

Bridge

“Captain I am detecting a spacial disturbance ahead,” reported Stonn, from the Science station.

“On screen,” commanded Starbuck.

What they saw looked similar to a wormhole opening. Out of it flew a ship that resembled both a squid and a flower. Shortly after the ship was through, the wormhole closed.

“Red Alert! Shields up!” Commanded Starbuck.

“Shields at full power,” answered Kalven.

“Hail them,” ordered Starbuck. “This is Captain Kara Thrace of the United Federation of Planets. We seek peaceful contact with the Vorlon people.”

“No answer,” replied 1 of 20.

“We are being bombarded with tachyons originating from the unknown ship,” reported Stonn. “No harmful effect.”

(ANSWER) everyone heard in their heads.

“1 of 20, reply back telepathically, not all of us are telepaths,” ordered Starbuck.

(If you can not hear us, we will speak in person) they all heard in their heads.

“We would be happy to come aboard your ship or have you come to ours it you would-“ began Starbuck

“A shuttle is leaving the alien ship,” reported Kalven.

“Right, I guess we need a welcoming committee,” mused Starbuck. “That will be myself, Mister Stonn, 1 of 20, and Councilor Daimz. Mister Kalven, you have the Con.”

They arrived in the landing bay just before the alien shuttle. After it landed, an opening appeared, looking like a mouth and a ramp extended like a tongue to the deck. Standing on the end of the ramp as it moved outward and downward was a being unlike anything they had ever seen before. It appeared to be some sort of space suit. It had an overly large collar from which a pair of short eyestalks protruded. Sticking up from the center of the ring the collar formed was a neck and head with a single orafice. But most of his body was concealed by a series of cloaks that concealed even his general body shape.

“It appears to be organic technology,” observed Stonn. “Similar to Cylon biomaterial, but of an order more sophisticated. I living ship. Fascinating!”

“I am Captain Kara Thrace of the United Federation of Planets, this is my Science Officer, mister Stonn, my Communications Officer 1 of 20 and our ship’s Councilor Daimz. We seek peaceful contact with the Vorlon people.”

The creature nodded in response.

“Are you a Vorlon?” Asked Starbuck.

“Yes,” replied the Vorlon and as he did so there were musical notes and something lit up on his chest.

“We are a Federation of multiple species who have joined together for mutual exchange and defense,” explained Starbuck “We hope to learn about each other and perhaps offer you membership in our Federation.”

The Vorlon turned away from Starbuck to gaze at Daimz.

“First one?” Asked the Vorlon.

(Captain, I believe the Vorlon may be an energy being, similar to myself) thought Daimz.

(Yes) thought the Vorlon, who then looked upward. (There is another First one!)

(S/he is newly ascended and needs help getting used to being like us) thought Daimz.

(Bring him. We will help him) thought the Vorlon before turning back to Starbuck. A robotic arm holding a crystal protruded from the folds or his cloak. “This will help you face the Shadows.”

Starbuck took the offered crystal.

“What is it?” Asked Starbuck.

“Only what you must know,” before turning back to Daimz. (You will speak for your people to us. Bring the other First One. I will go to your people to speak for mine)

“Captain, I believe he wants me to be the Federation Ambassador to the Vorlons and to help Commander Grcic,” explained Daimz. “He will, in turn become their ambassador to the Federation.”

“Yes,” agreed the Vorlon. “You will follow when I jump.”

“I’m afraid our ship does not have jump capability,” replied Starbuck.

“I will open the door. You will follow,” answered the Vorlon.

“What do we call you?” Asked 1 of 20.

“Kosh.”

The Vorlon said nothing else as they waited for Grcic’s box to be retrieved. Soon Grcic and Daimz were rolling up the ramp into Kosh’s shuttle, followed by the Vorlon who moved in a sort of gliding motion until he was on the ramp, which retracted to pull the three of them in.

By the time Kosh’s shuttle had made it back to his ship, they were all back on the Bridge. Shortly after Kosh’s shuttled landed, it re-emerged from the Vorlon ship. Then, another wormhole opened up and another Vorlon ship emerged on which the shuttle landed before it turned around and when back into the wormhole, that closed up behind it.

Then another wormhole opened up and Kosh’s ship turned towards it.

(Follow) Kosh said in their heads, as his ship went into the wormhole.

“You heard the man, ahead full impulse,” commanded Starbuck.

And so, the Enterprise followed the Vorlon ship into the wormhole.
