Episode 3: Back to Kobol
Captain’s log: Stardate 58236.3 It’s been three days since we’ve entered this hadean realm. It appears to be another universe, but one that is very different from our own. One thing is clear, we would be hopelessly lost if we didn’t have the Vorlon ship to follow. We’ve tried to alert Star Fleet to our coming, but sub-space radio does not appear to function here. So when we arrive at Kobol, it will be a surprise. Lt Commander Ston had left his tricorder running on passive mode during our face to face meeting with the Vorlon. The results of the scan were . . . interesting.
Engineering has managed to decipher the information on the crystal the Vorlon gave us. It contained a package of what they consider basic technologies. They call the universe we are currently in: Hyperspace and it is their form of faster-that-light travel. Apparently, distances are shorter in Hyperspace than in normal space. They enter and leave hyperspace via ‘Jump Engines’ and we now have the plans to build one. But they are large and expensive to run. So as an alternative, it is possible to build ‘Jump Gates’ in fixed locations that allow ships without jump engines to enter and exit hyperspace. Navigation in hyperspace is done via tachyon beacons, which is also the Volon method of interstellar communication. Engineering is currently working on a tachyon transceiver.
The reason the Vorlons gave us these technologies was to prepare us for the coming of a race called the Shadows. Apparently, every few thousand years they attack everyone in the galaxy.
In orbit of Kobol: USS Apollo: Bridge
“Captain, sensors are detecting a spacial anomaly forming 333,333 kilometers away,” reported the Cylon Science Officer, Lieutenant Commander Gary Four. “It appears to be a wormhole to another universe. Standby . . .”
“Shields up!” Commanded the Ferengi First Officer: Commander Nog.
“Red Alert!” Commanded Klingon Captain Worf.
“Shield up and at full strength,” reported the Vulcan Tactical Officer, Lieutenant Sukov
“. . . There appears to be a ship coming through the wormhole.” Reported Gary Four.
“Patch me through to all the ships in the Kobol system,” commanded Worf
“Channels are open,” reported the Human Communications Officer, Jeff Conway.
“To all ships in the Kobol system, this is Captain Worf. “We may have an incursion in progress. Galactica and Atlantia, shield the planet from anything they send your way, Atalanta and Odyssey get above and below the intruder, Gage move to Starboard flank, Apollo will take the Port Flank.”
“They have all acknowledged sir,” reported Conway.
“Then send a message to Starfleet Command, directly to Fleet Admiral Adama, informing him of what is happening,” commanded Worf. “Put the intruder on the screen.
“It looks something like a Squid or a flower,” mused Nog. “This may be a first Contact situation.
“There is another ship coming through,” reported Gary Four.
“It’s the Enterprise!” Gasped Worf. “Hail them!”
Kobol: Athens: Star Fleet Command: Fleet Admiral Adama’s office
“You caused quite a stir with the way you arrived,” chuckled Fleet Admiral William “Husker” Adama as he shared a drink with one of his Captains.
“It couldn’t be helped sir,” replied Starbuck. “Once we were in hyperspace, our subspace communications wouldn’t work so we had no way to give you warning.”
“Since you’ve seen it first hand, what do you think of traveling that way?” Asked Adama.
“It’s faster than warp, but not as fast as making a series of Jumps,” replied Starbuck. “And it wasn’t exactly pleasant. And I looks like putting Hyperspace drives on ships will be very expensive. And I have no idea if it will work with warp cores or Jump drives. I don’t think it has use as a military application. But once we build jump-gates, It might be useful for high volume civilian traffic. Their ships wouldn’t need any kind of FTL drive, just access to a gate.”
“Colonial Movers would like that,” observed Adama. “Their freighters are in need of replacement, they are losing their market to the Tarquinian ships.”
“Well the Tarquinians don’t do anything but mining and freight,” said Starbuck.
“Kobol, doesn’t do anything but farming and Starfleet,” joked Adama.
“So what do you think of the Vorlon Ambassador?” Asked Starbuck.
“Haven’t met him,” replied Adama. “He refuses to come down from his ship until we build him an embassy equipped with his atmosphere. Which is especially annoying because you already found out he is an energy being and probably doesn’t need to breathe.”
“Maybe he just doesn’t want unexpected visitors?” Suggested Starbuck.
“Your report said he was telepathic,” pointed out Adama. “If that’s the case, I should probably never meet him. Normally I don’t have a problem with telepathy. It’s damn useful in a battle. But the Talosians and Medeusans and Vulcans are all members of the Federation. Until he joins up, he can just deal with our politicians.”
“Limiting what information he has access to,” agreed Starbuck.
“What do you think of his warnings about the Shadow aliens?” Asked Adama.
“I’m not sure whether to believe him or not,” replied Starbuck. “Aliens that attack everyone periodically ever few thousand years? It could be a ruse to get us under Vorlon control.”
“That’s a distinct possibility,” agreed Adama. “But the Cylons taught us that sometimes the enemy takes its’ time building up forces before attacking. I was debating about whether to build the next 4 constitutions. I think I will tell the Borg to start on them.”
“Well, I’m anxious to get back to exploring the galaxy,” said Starbuck. “But if you need me, just call me on subspace.”
“I’ll keep in touch,” replied Adama. “In fact, I’m going to start a series of weekly subspace briefings with all the Captains. So you’ll be hearing from me regularly.”
