80s Daria Chapter 8
By Dr T
The Start of Spring
Classes started on Wednesday, the 7th. Monday afternoon, however, Tyler and Daria were rounded up, along with Cindy, by an acquittance of theirs.
If she and Patti had ever dressed similarly, Samantha would have easily been mistaken as her fraternal twin. Her hair was cut into a short bob and she had freckles, but otherwise the two looked very similar. However, Samantha would generally only answer to ‘Sam,’ and except in concerts, wore jeans, flannel shirts, and combat boots. For formal concerts, she wore something approaching a very slightly feminized version of a tux. She claimed to be both asexual and androgynous – considering all the other non-heteronormative/cisgendered in their class (and most others) where to some degree in the closet, this rather made her stand out.
Sam was technically an organ major, but played second violin in the orchestra and had played trumpet in the marching band. Like Daria, she had tested out of some of her Freshman classes; unlike Daria, these had mostly been music classes – especially the two required years of theory. That allowed her to have taken the orchestration course in the fall, and she was now taking Intro to Composition. That was Sam’s goal; to be a professional composer.
Sam wanted Cindy and Daria to drop chorus and spend that time (along with Tyler) as a string quartet, hopefully dedicated to at least come of her already-composed quartets – chorus rehearsals were Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:00 (Fridays at 3:00 was ‘Proms’ – 30-45 minutes of short solo or small group performances – all music majors had to attend at least 15 performances of some kind, and had to perform at least one solo on stage, either at least half a recital or a Prom performance). Daria led the bargaining, and in the end, the four agreed that Daria, Cindy, and Tyler could each pick a quartet piece for the group, and they would at least practice all of Sam’s compositions. In the end, all three really liked two of Sam’s eight completed quartets, and the group pieced two more various movements from the remaining six plus Sam’s latest quartet, composed for the composition class. They would give a concert later that spring, five of Sam’s, two Haydn quartets, and a modern serialist work.
Daria had been pleased to learn that she had been the first chair flute of the Symphonic Band. There were four bands in the spring semester – in order, the Wind Ensemble (which also met in the fall), Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Varsity Band. All instrumental majors had to take 12 semesters of large ensemble (bands, orchestra, choruses) and 6 small ensembles. For someone like Daria, in both bands and the orchestra, this would be easy. For others, especially those where there were a lot more majors and other players than opportunities (mostly clarinets, saxophones, percussionists, and the brass players other than the horns, plus a few of the better students from the instrument classes), the extra two bands were needed.
The orchestra conductor also spoke to her, and told her that while she was more than good enough to play in the first violin section – in fact, he thought she had a shot to be the concert mistress her senior year – he put selective strong players in the second violins to beef up the section sound. He also liked the way she coached some of the non-majors. So, overall, Daria felt good about her standing with the instrumental professors.
The first week moved quickly in other ways. Quinn had earned small speaking roles in all four of the spring plays – a drama, a comedy, and two musicals. In the second musical, ‘The Pajama Game,’ Daria and Tyler would be an extra couple in the ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’ scene. Quinn, Stacy, Jennifer, and Jane also saw ‘The Three Graces’ before Tyler shipped it off to his dealer in Florida. While all three models were still a little uncomfortable with the fact that their bodies (and even more so their faces) would be on display, they all admitted they looked fabulous. The five were pleased with the sketched-in figures for the Muses painting. Tyler would take most of the rest of the semester to finish that one, with various models stopping in so he could add some detailing. He also had to do the portrait of Quinn as well, Considering that was for her maternal grandmother, Tyler, with Daria’s backing, refused to paint her nude for it.
Quinn was pledging the music sorority (Sigma Alpha Iota), surprising Daria slightly, as she thought Quinn would pledge a social sorority. Quinn would actually be approached by a few of them over the next few weeks, but turned them down. She would also be allowed to join the musical theater honor group, Alpha Psi Omega – those more than fulfilled her interests. Daria was not approached by any of the social sororities, but was approached by both Sigma Alpha Iota and Tau Beta Sigma (the band sorority). After a bit of consideration (well, a very little bit), Daria turned both down but admitted she might be interested in the future.
All considered, this was going to be an even busier semester for Daria than the previous one. She was taking one less regular course, but was taking both Saxophone and Trombone class (she would have to take five such classes) in addition to the second semester of the required voice class plus her two major instruments. Granted, the two new instrument classes would be easier than her even her Speech class had been, but instead of Statistics, she was finishing off her math requirements by taking Calculus I – and she quickly learned she was the only non-math or science major in the class. Symphonic Band would take less time than the marching Band had, and free up some of her weekends. She wanted to get at least a bit more time on her writing (she had mostly been revising earlier work the previous semester) and of course spend more time with Tyler. She also wanted to keep up her friendship with Jane, although this would be mostly done on weeknights or on double dates with Jane and Jennifer, or even triple dates with Quinn and Stacy. When there was a concert or recital involved, Cathy and Patti often would go to lunch or dinner with them as well. The three couples also had to plan on Spring Break, for them from Saturday, April 11, through Easter Sunday, April 19, although due to flight schedules they had to fly back in the afternoon of the 18th.
It was when they got together to discuss the trip the first Sunday after class had started when Quinn dropped a request on Daria.
Slightly shocked, Daria finally demanded, “You want me to do what by mid-March?”
“We each need to find a period scene which everyone involved is unfamiliar with the scene, and there should be either three or four speaking parts,” Quinn restated, referring to her acting class. “I figured the best way to get a scene no one knows is ask you to write one. It only has to be between five and ten minutes long.” Seeing Daria drop her head into her hands, Quinn added, “The professor said if we do well, we might be able to do the scene again for the first production next fall. Just think how good that would look on your resume!”
Daria glared at her twin, and then slowly smirked. “There are what? Forty students in that class?”
“Thirty-three this semester; twenty-one girls and twelve boys.”
“In no more than three sentences each, describe each one and include how good an actor they are.”
Puzzled, Quinn did as requested. When she was finished, Daria told her, “Fine. Tell Joseph and Clarence they will have a scene with you. You’ll have it two weeks from tomorrow. You’ll have your work cut out for you, but if you can deliver, your status will certainly go up among the regular theater folk.” The regular theater majors and musical theater majors often looked down on each other.
*
Two weeks later, Quinn was amazed and a bit intimidated by the scene her twin had created for her – if they pulled it off, there was a very good chance it would be selected for the fall production. It was really a Halloween scene. In the scene, the young 1920s flapper ‘virgin’ (Quinn) was giving herself to a stereotypical Victorian vampire – tall, muscular, and handsome (Joseph) to be made into a vampire herself – to be forever young, if undead. Or so she thought.
Instead, it turned out that the vampire was not bringing her to his lair to turn her into a vampire as promised, but to her over to his master vampire. Most of the male theater and music theater majors could be classed in the ‘heart-throb wanna-be’ and related categories. Clarence, however, was more of a cross between Peter Lorre, Woody Allen, and Wally Cox, and his nebbish version of a vampire was only interested in dinner -- Quinn. Quinn therefore had to play coy, seductive, shocked, and finally a combination of horror and despair as she is killed for supper.
The three would earn an A+ and the scene would indeed become the centerpiece of the production given early the next October.
*
That of course all lay in the future. Instead, like many, perhaps most, undergraduates, Daria and friends found the first part of the spring term the hardest of the year. In the fall, the majority of students were hopefully fresh from a summer away from heavy intellectual demands and distracted by fall activities (football, Halloween) and two Mondays (Labor Day and Columbus Day) and a Friday (Homecoming/Alumni Day) off before Thanksgiving. In the spring, except for Washington’s birthday, it was a straight shot from the first day of class through the start of spring break (the first Martin Luther King Jr Day wouldn’t be observed until 1986). While the weather in Delaware was nowhere as bad as most other places in the US, it could still be cold, with sleet or snow causing at least minor problems with little warning. The University’s Valentine’s Dance had fallen into oblivion in the late 1960s, and the fraternity/sorority spring formals all occurred after spring break.
Daria’s weeks were more than busy enough that she did not fully notice this, but the workload would slowly build on the academically inclined such as herself. It was a rare Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday when she returned to her dorm room before 8:30, and she had to force herself to bed by 10:30. By early February, Jane was making Daria take a shower soon after 9:30 and would follow that up with a brief shoulder/neck massage. As Jane and Jennifer spent each weekend in bed in the dorm, Daria and Jane left the cots together and slept snuggled against each other. Jane did not have the academic workload Daria did (the other students in Daria’s Calculus class were so advanced that they ended up covering all the required material before spring break, and had progressed into some advanced ideas even before that – for the first time in her academic life, Daria was struggling to keep up). Still, Jane felt some of the same pressures, and welcomed the support of her friend and was thankful she could help her relax.
Weekends were only slightly better for Daria. Tyler would not allow her to stay in the music building or library later than 6:45 on Friday nights – in fact, he had once carried her out of the music building (to the amusement of the few observers about), quietly protesting she just needed to practice a little longer, but not struggling, over his shoulder. Saturday and Sunday mornings, she still spent at least two hours practicing, and spent the afternoons studying at Tyler’s as others came to model for him.
Of course, Friday and Saturday evenings, Daria and Tyler made certain that they enjoyed their time together. On Fridays when Daria was really stressed, he would cook them something simple, but she made certain that the pair spent at least an hour in foreplay and love-making afterwards. Tyler was also busier than he had been the previous semester. He had two extra research papers to write, and the texts needed to be at least 25 double-spaced pages, not counting endnotes. He was also pulling together the spring break for the three couples as well as a summer trip for himself and Daria which would likely last six to eight weeks. He was glad that Daria at least had a valid passport; he just needed to get her to pin down exactly where she might wish to visit (other than a long visit with his Danish relatives, the trip was rather open-ended at this point).
One Friday evening in early March, however, Daria varied the routine a bit, in part because of her period. She lubed Tyler up pushed her c-cups together to massage him to orgasm as she sucked on him as well. After a shower to clean up, Tyler asked her as they cuddled, “You’ve had something on your mind since we got back, beyond all the work. What’s bothering you?”
Since Tyler probably now knew her as well as anyone, even Quinn, Daria realized that she shouldn’t be surprised. “It’s not so much as bothering me in the sense of upsetting me. It’s more…more of a mental itch.”
“And what itch don’t you want to scratch?”
“Well, you’ve had sex with boys.”
“Years ago, but yes.”
“Do you regret any of it?”
“No,” Tyler said simply. “I enjoyed it at the time, and I don’t think doing it or ending the relationships hurt the other boys.”
“I…I’ve had let’s say sexual contact with a girl. But while there are probably any number of things we didn’t do, there is one thing I didn’t do that I started wondering about after Quinn and I had a talk over Christmas.”
“Cunnilingus?”
Daria could feel her face warm from blushing. “Yes. I mean, I really love it when you do it.”
Tyler squeezed Daria into a tighter hug. “Believe me, I enjoy doing it – your reactions are wonderful.”
“It’s not that I want anyone else to, well, do that to me. Or really doing anything else to me, other than you. I just wonder what doing it would be like.”
“I understand – you’re not totally straight, and you know a few other girls who are at least bisexual and in lesbian relationships, including your twin. It’s a perfectly natural curiosity on your part.”
Daria sighed.
“I know – you’d be tempted to experiment with Jane….”
“But she’s in a relationship, just like I am, and we could easily hurt many people. I like Jennifer and Stacy, but not that way, doing it with Quinn would be…icky, and a one-night stand with any girl would not only hurt you, it’s not really something I’d want to do even if I weren’t in a relationship.”
After a short pause, Tyler said gently, “Do we leave it there, or should I make a suggestion?”
After a longer pause, Daria whispered. “Go ahead.”
“Don’t have a one night experiment with someone in a relationship unless her partner also knows. Try to have one, if you do, with someone you like and are attracted to, but not someone you know you could easily fall in love with – it would still be a risk, of course.”
“Really? You…you would…?”
“Approve? More like understand; I’m not saying you should. And, to limit yourself, decide, and let her know, that’s it’s one night only – any repeat would be a three-way with me.” Daria stiffened. “NO, this is NOT some sneaky way for me to get us to have a three-way. It would be a way to limit yourself to the experiment if we’re to be in a usually exclusive relationship. I doubt if you’re much more inclined to share me with another female than I would be to share you with another male – I don’t at all, and I don’t really want to share you with another woman even once – but I will, if it will make you happy. I love you.”
“I love you, too.” Daria drifted off with a smile, reassured.
As busy as she was, Daria took some time when a worried-looking Patti asked to talk with her.
“I know I can trust you,” Patti said a bit sadly, “but I don’t know if you can help. I just don’t know who else I can turn to.”
“Are you and Cathy doing okay?” Daria asked.
“Mostly….” It came out sounding a bit like a question. Patti sighed. “Look, I wasn’t very interested in boys at twelve, and that was before my father started…molesting me, which he did for the next few years. That might not explain why I like girls, but it does explain why I don’t want any guy touching me. I can only take Tyler looking at me because you and Cathy are there, and he’s a nice guy.”
“Go on.”
“I think Cathy’s beautiful, but I doubt you or anyone else would think so.”
“I don’t think she’s beautiful, but I do think she’s adorable,” Daria replied.
“Fair enough,” Patti acknowledged. “I grew up abused; she grew up with a mother and two older sisters and a younger who are considered, outwardly at least, runway-model gorgeous in a holy-roller family with the women being considered good for being housekeepers and mothers.”
“Ouch, and I thought having Quinn as a twin was bad at times.”
“When you wear your smaller glasses, you’re as cute as Quinn, and without them, you’re prettier,” Patti pointed out. “You have different body types, and are both close to perfect examples of each. Did you really grow up believing no one could be attracted to you?”
“Well, slightly more that I wouldn’t be overly attracted to anyone,” Daria admitted. “Are you saying you’re more into Cathy than she is into you?”
“Emotionally, actually no,” Patti admitted. “But I’m more…into different aspects of the physical relationship.” Seeing the look on Daria’s face, Patti blushed but stated, “We get each other off with our fingers but I adore the way she tastes and she does like it when I do her. She, well….”
“It’s not for everyone,” Daria pointed out. “Come over to my room. I have a catalog you can order from. If you don’t have a private checking account, give me the cash and I’ll send away for anything the two of you might like.”
To Daria’s and even Patti’s surprise, Cathy was actually very intrigued by some of the offerings in the catalog. Daria was happy she could help them out.
“You know,” Quinn told Tyler, leaning against the door frame to his office the Monday before the break, “I’m even more glad than I thought I would be that spring break is coming up.”
“And why is that, other than we’ll be in Florida?”
“Because I would be even more worried about Daria than I am. She’s not quite running herself ragged, but I’m starting to think she would be if we weren’t about to have a break.”
“True,” Tyler agreed. “Only a few more days. Are you and Stacy packed?”
“Well, we mostly know what we’re packing at least. You’re sure we don’t need bikinis?”
Tyler shrugged. “If any of you might have your periods while we’re there, you might want to pack the bottoms. That’s about the only time anyone wears a suit bottom or shorts in the park. Obviously you won’t need bikinis in the theme parks.”
One additional reason Daria had been working so hard is that she and Tyler had been practicing Haydn’s ‘Sonata for Violin and Viola in F’ since November. They performed it for the Proms the last Friday before the start of break. That night, since Jennifer’s roommate had left that afternoon, Jane stayed in her room and Tyler spent the night in Daria’s dorm room for the first time.
Of course, there was no way six people could fit into Tyler’s Hornet, plus there was the luggage. Jane and Jennifer therefore went with Tyler and Daria, but their luggage went with Quinn and Stacy. Their plane left at 8:55, so they had to get up earlier than anyone (especially Jane) really wanted to. All five were surprised that they were flying business class – they all had expected to be in regular coach seats. “What?” Quinn teased before Jane could, “not first class for at least you two?”
“The only real difference between business and first class on these flights is that first class gets a glass of sparkling wine and an open bar – and since you have to be twenty-one to get a drink on the flight….”
“Good points, and thank you for the upgrades.”
The flight was just over two hours, and they were checked into the rented van and out of the airport by 11:35. Even after stopping for a quick lunch and then grocery shopping, they were at the Park shortly after 1:00. To the surprise of the group, Tyler led them to the office, where he registered them and paid a fee for each – a small fee for himself, Daria, and Quinn (as part of his family) and a larger one for Jane, Jennifer, and Stacy (as guests).
“I thought you were a part owner?” Quinn asked as they got into the van to drive to his place.
“I own a home here,” Tyler responded. “This is a family-owned park. My family loaned them a bit of the start-up money, helped with some technical advice, and bought the land for the cottage. We pay an annual fee, but we still pay a token pool fee. Guests pay a much lower fee than they would if they were staying here in a rental or were even day guests.”
As they drove to Tyler’s cottage, the group saw a number of nude individuals in the middle and far distances, and drove around a few nudists on bicycles. They pulled into the open garage, and the first thing Tyler did was pull off his shirt. The girls looked at each other as he opened the door to the kitchen. Jane had her shirt off (she rarely wore a bra) and then picked up some of the groceries. Daria took off her top and bra and followed suit. Quinn did the same.
Stacy and Jennifer looked at each other, turned their backs to each other, and followed suit by baring their breasts and picking up the last of the groceries. Unlike the others, they held the grocery bags rather strategically. The other four soon had the van unloaded and groceries put away. They noted that the chairs were well-padded, and that there were plenty of towels to sit on if wanted.
Tyler and the three more adventurous women stripped and donned their sandals, grabbed towels in case of need, and went off to explore part of the park. Jennifer and Stacy stayed behind, but were going to lie on towels in the grass to get a little tanning in. All six were well covered in sun-screen.
Stacy and Jennifer were braver on Sunday, and spent the day nude with the others. While they did hang out by the pool for a while, none got into the water. Daria, Quinn, and Jane were surprised at how at-ease they felt. Quinn was especially impressed that Daria was so comfortable in only her skin, Talking about it, Daria admitted that she was only because Tyler, Jane, and Quinn herself were with her. Stacy and Jennifer were each a bit shyer, but nevertheless they were able to stay with the group and not blush too much.
On the Monday, they went to Disney World. Quinn had planned from the fall to apply for a summer job at the resort – with Quinn hoping for something that would look good on her résumé. Stacy, followed by Jane and Jennifer, had also decided to apply, all believing they would turn down anything they didn’t like, and Stacy and Jennifer feeling the same if they didn’t like living at Tyler’s. Still, all four had been scheduled for interviews that Monday. Although they would not hear back with offers until later that month, all four took the offered jobs. Learning they would be rooming together (the interviewer had simply smiled when told the address, and stated he knew a number of folks at the ‘House of the Mouse’ who lived there), all four would be working the late shift – Stacy and Quinn on floats in the ‘Main Street Electrical Parade’ while Jane would be working on the actual floats. To her surprise, Jennifer would be doing a late shift as Cinderella.
The group spent the rest of the day, as well as the next two days, touring Disney World, although they only stayed until the Park’s closing on Tuesday. They spent Thursday at SeaWorld, but only Quinn, Stacy, and Jennifer enjoyed their time there. Other than Tuesday evening, the group spent their evenings, and all day Friday, at the resort, enjoying the sun and the pool. By Friday morning, even Stacy and Jennifer were thoroughly enjoying the sunshine on their bare skin. The two pairs of women were also quite enjoying their intimacy – despite having two other active couples in the cottage, all three pairs felt they had enough privacy to thoroughly enjoy themselves – helped by the fact that in addition to the one full bathroom (although it had a shower rather than a tub), the two small bedrooms also had their own half bath (while the master suite had a full bath), so that once the bedroom doors shut, no one had to come out until breakfast.
To Daria’s initial surprise, she and Tyler were the most adventurous couple of the three, although considering the family nature of the park they were not too adventurous. Still, Tyler had an outside fireplace/grill and they had small fires there most nights. The two lesbian couples cuddled and kissed a little, while Daria and Tyler were a bit more intimate while staying fairly decent. While they would be staying either in Copenhagen or the family’s park (which operated on much the same terms as the one in Florida), Tyler promised Daria some time in at least one adult-only nudist area. Daria had been turned on by the simply nudity – not by any individual (other than Tyler and a bit by Jane) but by the simple vista of visuals.
And so all were a bit sorry to leave that Saturday afternoon – Daria looking forward to the summer, and rather refreshed from the time off her busy schedule, and the other women just looking forward to having summer in the sun as they were confident of getting some sort of offer from Disney.
