80s Daria Chapter 10
By Dr T

The end of summer

The next Thursday after their weekend threesome with Sam, the last of the final full week of summer one classes, Tyler picked Daria up at the dorm she was staying in that summer. “You look…confused? Is that the right word?”

“If it isn’t, it will do,” Daria admitted. “So, you remember how we rearranged dorm rooms for the fall?” Stacy and Quinn were moving to Daria’s floor; Jennifer was going to move in with Jane into Daria’s spot, and Daria (with Tyler’s help) was going to pay to upgrade into a single room, the three all next to each other.

“Of course.”

Daria sighed. “Well, my room stays the same, but I talked with Quinn last night. There have been changes – Quinn and Stacy have broken up, as have Jane and Jennifer. Supposedly they are all still friends, at least I hope so.”

Tyler frowned, but Daria carried on. “Now here’s where it gets strange, even for Quinn and Jane.”

“Quinn and Jane are together?” That would be a surprising pair.

“No and yes,” Daria responded. “No, they aren’t a couple, but they are going to room together. Stacy and Jennifer have become a couple. Now as for Quinn and Jane, they have met and apparently fallen for a pair of brothers, working at Disney this summer and attending our dear institution.”

“Presumably not music, theater, or art majors,” Tyler observed.

“No, one is a double major in geology and biology, the other is a geology major but concentrating on being a starting wide receiver. He’s in my year, the other one is a class ahead, but being a double major he’ll likely graduate with my class.”

Tyler merely shook his head.

“They also want your permission to let the boys come sleep at your place, starting in July, and that means one couple will sleep in our room.”

Sighing, Tyler said, “If you’re okay with it, I’ll go along.” He shook his head. “I hope it works out for them.”

Daria could only agree.

Sunday, June 28 – Philadelphia International Airport

“This is one of the things I hate about flying to Europe,” Tyler commented.

Daria stretched, and then looked at her watch. “Ten-twenty, and another ten minutes before boarding starts. I have to agree. This is even later than my previous flights.” Daria (and Quinn) had been to Europe three times before. In 9th and 12th grade, they had travelled to France for a week each time in the spring with a school-sponsored trip (their school alternated with trips to France, Germany, and either Spain or Mexico). In 11th grade, the select choir had travelled to England for the Harrogate Youth Festival.

“Can you sleep on a plane?” Tyler asked.

“Oh, yes; unlike Quinn. You?”

“I might doze a bit – it should be a bit easier in business class than in a regular seat.” He smiled a little. “As an international flight, you also can have a drink.”

Daria rolled her eyes.

Tyler had in fact managed to doze a bit, although nowhere near as much as Daria had. The plane landed in Frankfort a few minutes early, and they had nearly two hours to go through customs and get to their plane to Copenhagen. From the airport, it was just over a forty minute cab ride to Tyler’s apartment. He had explained that he had sold his mother’s place the year before to a cousin and bought a small apartment, as he knew he would be coming to Denmark on both personal and professional trips. There was a small kitchenette, decent-sized main room and bedroom, a large closet, and a small bath. The main room had a TV, VCR, a dinette with two chairs, two easy chairs with a table in between, and some bookshelves, filled with porn tapes and books in Danish.

Both were hungry, and fortunately there was a small shopping area about 100 meters from his apartment complex. So, after Tyler had plugged in the refrigerator, the pair went and had a light meal, did a little grocery shopping, and came back to relax. They would have a late light supper and go to bed early. Fortunately, both were able to fall asleep, and were mostly adjusted to the new time when they woke up the next morning.

That Wednesday and Thursday, Tyler took Daria around the city, visiting a few parks and seeing some of the sites (including the Little Mermaid, just to say they’d seen it), and two of the museums. By the time they’d finished Thursday night, they had walked enough to tire themselves out, and so had slept well enough to be fully adjusted to the time.

Friday afternoon, they had mostly repacked. They waited outside Tyler’s building, and soon a small Audi pulled up and a rather striking blonde came out and over. Tyler introduced his cousin, who gave Daria a strong hug, and soon the trio were off for the coastal resort.

Compared to Daria, Tyler had quite a large maternal family. Besides his aunt and uncle and their children, there were two great aunts and their families as well – all had homes at the resort, even if many of the middle generation only used them on weekends and during their summer vacations. However, everyone was there that weekend, as they all liked Tyler to at least some degree (and many more than that) and wanted to meet Daria.

Tyler had traded his mother’s place for a smaller cabin, set back further from the beach than most of the permanent buildings – this had gained him some equity, as well as privacy. In addition to specializing in the viola, Tyler of course also played the violin – he had a viola and violin in his apartment, and they brought them along so that they could keep up their practicing. Daria was touched that he had one of his cousins pick up a basic student model flute for her as well. The pair would make certain they practiced their stringed instruments every morning. Tyler would draw or paint before dinner, and Daria would practice the flute then.

They would spend just over three full weeks at the Danish resort. On the whole, Daria enjoyed her time there – Tyler’s family was friendly without being smothering or even overly-curious in anyway. While the Baltic was chilly, the beaches were usually warm and the other guests polite and the entire atmosphere was relaxed. During the days and evenings, Daria felt like she was truly part of a family (more so than her own, other than Quinn, Amy, and her father) and part of a community. The lovers’ nights were romantic, and usually pleasurably erotic. Granted, by the time they left Daria would not be interested in eating rye bread for any meal (let alone usually breakfast and lunch) and wouldn’t want to see herring on the menu in any form until the next summer – and wasn’t overly keen on sea food until they reached the Mediterranean.

They left the beach resort on Sunday the 26th, and Copenhagen the next morning by train. The train took them to Paris, but since both had been there before they just transferred to a train which took them overnight to Nimês. They spent two days there, before taking a bus to Monaco for a day, and then on to Cannes. On the Monday (August 3rd), they travelled to a very different resort than Daria (or Tyler for that matter) had ever been to. While it was on the coast, this was even more than an adults-only resort. It also had a section designed for people like Daria – a section for people who liked to be watched as well as watch.

The ’rules’ were simple – couples at a minimum, watch all you wanted but you also had to engage in sexual activity before leaving, stay at least five meters away from the action (binoculars were okay but of course no cameras allowed), only approach to request joining in later out of the area. As shy as Daria still was in many social situations, she had no problems ‘performing’ while in that area – she was greatly stimulated and even inspired by some of the other couples (or trios or even groups in a few cases) until her libido took over.

While no one asked to join them (to both of their relief), Daria was pleased at the number of complements they received as a couple as well as about her. Daria had always had an inferiority about her looks compared with Quinn. She could discount Tyler’s opinion to a degree as he was in love with her – the complements she had been getting since starting the University, especially this summer, allowed her to acknowledge her own beauty, even if she still thought Quinn was more attractive. Daria was now fully in tune with her body and comfortable with her looks, her sensuality, and sexuality.

They left Friday morning, and reached Florence that evening. Both were interested to some degree in Renaissance art and its start, as well as the Italian Renaissance in general – all that drew them to Florence. In addition to the museums and churches, they also enjoyed shopping the many craft stores, especially on and around the Ponte Vecchio. Daria had no interest in having her ears pierced, and so refused the offer of earrings. She did, however, convince Tyler to buy a ring for himself which sort of matched her promise ring, as well as a set of similar cuff links. Daria allowed him to buy her a necklace with a pendent motif that matched their rings as well.

The two would have liked to have visited Rome, but would want much longer than they had time left to see even half of what they would want to visit. They therefore traveled to Yugoslavia and spent three days on the Adriatic. While there was not a nudist beach, the town did have a topless one. On Wednesday evening, they traveled up to Trieste and took a connecting flight through Germany back home.

Daria would spend several days with Tyler at the new apartment after their return. She knew her mother would not be happy, but Daria did not particularly care. She had called her father at work to let him know they had returned, and as far as she was concerned, this was more than enough notification. She did agree to return the following Tuesday morning. Quinn and the rest of the Disney group would be returning that afternoon. She and Quinn would only be staying that Tuesday and Wednesday nights – registration for fall classes started that Thursday. Daria of course wanted to get back with Tyler as soon as possible. As for Quinn, auditions for the fall plays would be that weekend and she wanted time to do a bit of practice. The fall musical would be ‘A Chorus Line.’ Quinn had been one of the many selected for at least a role as a background dancer for the audition and final scenes – much like the play itself, there would be at least two more auditions to select the final co-starring roles.

Jake was very happy his girls were home, even if it was for just two days. He gladly took them and his sulking wife out for dinner that Wednesday. He was pleased that both his girls were sparkling that night; granted it was usually Daria who had often been the quiet one, but she had many days of more than pleasant interaction with her father and sister at dinners. And Quinn had had a few down days as well, even if she was usually talking no matter what her actual mood. This night, they were both at their best.

Helen was unhappy – she had to acknowledge something Jake had come to terms with over the previous fourteen months or so – their little girls were neither. They were their own, adult persons. No doubt both, especially Quinn, might need some coaxing and guidance, but both were really ready to get on with life far better than most 19, nearing 20, year olds.

Quinn was looking forward to the upcoming academic year – she felt her career goals, which had largely been a dream the year before, were much more plausible. She felt secure in her academics, her friendships with Stacy, Jane, and a few others, her relationship with Daria, and had great hopes for her new romantic one as well.

Daria would have to admit that she was less sure than Quinn about her future. She had no desire to teach at the school level and wouldn’t entertain the idea of transferring to the music education program. As good a musician as she was, she doubted she could make a career as a flutist, and while she might (emphasis on ‘might’) be able to make a living as a second violinist in an orchestra, she wasn’t sure if that would be satisfying. She had not done nearly as much writing as she had hoped to, and was wondering if she was cut out to be a writer – true writers actually write more than they think about/talk about writing, and she hadn’t only done much since the previous fall.

On the other hand, she was much more secure than Quinn in her personal life, a switch for them since they had left high school. She was still a bit surprised that she had both a romantic and a sex life, and that she enjoyed both aspects more than she had ever guessed. She had done more than she had ever fantasized about.

Daria hoped her Sophomore year was as pleasant and rewarding as her Freshman year had been. She knew it couldn’t be more surprising in retrospect.

End of Freshman Year.
