My name is Grace. Most people call me Moon or Girl in the Moon because that’s what I go by on my YouTube channel. I’m a content creator. I used to live in my converted van that I named Luna with my two ginger cats Fred and George. The three of us traveled all over North America. I did that for about five and a half years.
Last year I met a family that watched my channel. They were camping in the same campground as me. The two youngest kids wanted to meet me and the cats so they all came over to introduce themselves. The family consisted of a single father and his three kids. And, I knew who the father was. He’s the bassist in a band I’d been listening to for a long time. I’ve been a fan of his and the band for eighteen years. Turns out he was a fan of mine. They all had been watching my channel for about four years when we met.
His name is Pete and he plays in a band called Fall Out Boy. I got along with all four members of the family right from the start. I made fast friends with the kids. We ended up spending the three days I was there together and had a great time. When we had to part ways I gave my email and phone number to the kids so they could stay in touch. We spent months emailing, texting, and calling each other. They were all on the road with the band over the summer and I was in Alaska.
During this time, Pete’s oldest, Bronx, decided that his Dad and I should date. He tried to set us up. Pete didn’t know that Bronx was doing that until he called me one night after Bronx had told his Dad he needed to get his shit together and figure out what I meant to him. After that, we talked about how we felt. When the band was on a break from touring and I had come back to the lower 48, we met up again to camp together. We spent eight days together in a beach town on the California coast.
During our time together at the beach, Pete and I decided to give our budding relationship a chance. He invited me to go back with them and spend more time with him and the kids. I took him up on the offer and spent another two weeks with them at his house in Los Angeles. I only left when he had to go back on the road with the band. He has full custody of the youngest two. They stayed in Chicago with his parents while he was out of the country. He shares custody of his oldest with his ex-wife. Bronx stayed with his Mom.
I kept in touch with the kids and Pete while he was away. I was invited to come for a visit in Chicago by his mother while the kids were there. I got there the same day Pete came back to the states for a short break for Thanksgiving. He asked me to come back to California for Christmas.
I did spend Christmas with them. We had a magical Christmas together. One of the best Christmases I’ve ever had. And I got an amazing gift, my new family. That’s when he asked me to stay with them forever. I moved in with them and have been here since. And I’m now acting as Mom to the younger kids. Saint and Marvel’s mother left them when she found someone else.
Now it’s February and we’ll be leaving in a few weeks for the last leg of the year long world tour the band is on for their latest album.
A week before Valentine’s Day I was sitting with Saint as he did his school work. He does online school because of Pete’s travel schedule. I was editing a video to post on my channel. We had taken the kids to Disneyland over the weekend and I had filmed some of it. My channel has changed a little. Now my adventures include Pete and the kids. But my viewership has gone up. I had seen my channel talked about on the Fall Out Boy subReddit so I suspected some of the views came from there.
Pete and Marvel had just gotten home. He’d picked her up from preschool. I made us lunch and she went down for her nap. Pete sat with Saint to help him with his math. I was finished with editing and left the room to give the two Wentz men some space to work.
I was sitting on the couch in the living room watching a home improvement show when Pete came in.
He smiled at me and said, “You know, Valentine’s Day is next week. Bronx has offered to babysit for us if we want to go out.” He sat next to me and leaned in to get a kiss.
“That’s very kind of him to offer. But I don’t need or want a big to-do.”
Looking a little shocked Pete said, “But, it’s our first Valentine’s Day together. I thought we could go out dancing. There’s a honky tonk I can take you to.”
Smiling at the thought of Pete trying to line dance or two-step, I told him, “Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day. The best ones have always been the ones that I only got a card and maybe flowers. I don’t need a big production. All I need or want is to be told honestly how you feel about me.”
“I tell you that every day. I love you. I love you more each day.” He told me very earnestly.
“I love you too.” I told him.
He thought about what I said for a moment before saying, “We could still take Bronx up on his offer and just spend the night somewhere else. I could book us a nice room somewhere.”
“If you want to. But I don’t need it.”
“You’re very different from anyone else I’ve dated. I’ve never not done something big for valentines when I’ve been in a relationship.”
“Well, I lived in a van for five years. I think I’m just fundamentally different from everyone else you’ve dated before.”
“You are. And it’s been really nice.” He flashed his grin at me. “I’m not complaining.”
I chuckled a little at that. “Really, Honey, I don’t need a big gesture. Small and meaningful means more to me than big and flashy.”
“Ok. I can do that. Do you want to at least go out to dinner?”
“No. I want to cook us something nice.” I told him. Having a full kitchen was still new to me after living in a van for five years. I had forgotten how much I liked cooking.
“Alright, we’ll spend it at home.”
We settled down together on the couch while Saint finished his schoolwork and Marvel napped. Once she woke up we read a chapter of Matilda together. We had started on Roald Dahl’s books. We have been reading the Harry Potter books. But we only read those when all five of us are together. Bronx was at his mom’s house. We wanted to finish book 4 before leaving on tour. We were going to have Bronx starting at the end of the week and will have him until it’s time to leave. I wish he was able to come too. I know Pete will miss him and so will I.
Bronx was with us the week of Valentine’s. It fell on a Wednesday so the kids had normal school. I had cards for each of the kids and little boxes of chocolates. You know the small ones shaped like a heart that only have 3 or 4 pieces of candy. I got each of them one of those. The cards were simple ones that let me write what I wanted to say to each of them. I told each of them that I was so happy to have them in my life and that I loved them very much. I gave them the cards and candy at breakfast, but told them to save the candy for after school.
Bronx and Pete worked it out so that Bronx took the littles “camping” in the backyard. They set up the tent and all three kids, the dog Bowie, and my cats Fred & George, spent the evening in the tent. Their cat Mr. Fluff didn’t like being outside so he did not join them. The kids thought it was a real treat. We didn’t eat dinner with the kids. Pete called in a pizza for them. They ate outside on the patio. It’s L.A., the weather wasn’t very cold. They were fine and had a lot of fun.
I planned on cooking us a steak dinner with baked potatoes and steamed broccoli. This was something we both liked a lot but didn’t indulge in very often. I set the table, had candles lit and the lights turned down. I had even dressed up a little. I had bought a dress for the evening. Even though I wanted a small, quiet evening, it was still Valentine’s Day and I wanted it to be special.
I had told Pete that dinner would be ready at 7:30. I didn’t need any help, just for him to be at the table at 7:30. He showed up in the dining room right on time. He was showered, shaved and also dressed up. Not full on suit and tie. But a nice shirt and slacks, his hair was slicked back in a bun. He looked really good. I thought he was just so good looking.
I served dinner right at 7:30. He had a card and a bouquet of flowers for me. I had a card for him and dinner.
“You look very nice.” I told him as I entered the dining room with our plates.
“Thank you. You look very nice too.” He said as he flashed his grin at me, “These are for you.” He handed me the flowers after I had sat down the plates of food.
“Thank you, they’re beautiful.” I said I took them from him. I smiled at him. This was what I wanted. “I’m going to go put these in water and grab the wine.”
He sat down as I went to do what I needed to in the kitchen. I came back in with the wine and the card I had for him. I poured us each a glass of wine.
He handed me my card and told me to open and read it.
The card was sweet and very lovely. But inside he had tucked in a letter.
Grace,
You told me that you wanted something small, but meaningful. It took me a while to figure out what I could give you.
For years you’ve quoted me as your favorite poet. Until I heard you say that in one of your videos, I never thought of myself as one. Others have called me that before. Usually people that knew me. Even Patrick has said it. But I had always just thought of myself as a lyricist, not a poet.
When you called me that, it was different. You didn’t know me, you were just a fan of the music. But it started to change how I thought of myself. If you were calling me a poet then maybe I really was.
This poem is for you. Only you. I won’t share it with anyone else. It’s not for public consumption.
I love you,
Pete
The poem he wrote for me I won’t share. It was just for me and it was the most beautiful, important, and memorable gift anyone has ever given me.
I had tears in my eyes when I looked up at him. “Thank you. This is probably the most amazing and special gift any one has ever given me.”
“I’m glad you like it.” He said as he smiled at me.
“Open yours.” I told him. He hadn’t touched his card yet.
The card itself was very simple. I picked it so I could write out my feelings. I wrote him a love letter.
Pete,
Last year I spent Valentine’s Day alone with just Fred and George shut up in Luna weathering out a snow storm in Iowa. I had been alone for years but I wasn’t lonely. Nor was I looking for anyone. I truly thought I’d never be with anyone again. I was ok with that. Being on my own was fine. I was good, I was happy.
But then, just a few months later you and the children entered my life. At first I didn’t think that would change anything for me. I just had a few more friends that maybe I would visit with again. I never expected to find a family to love or that they would love me back.
You have given me so much in just a few short months. I have a partner that I love more than I’ve ever loved anyone before. Have I told you that? I love you so much. So, so very much. You make me feel heard, respected, loved and wanted. You make me feel so loved, and so cared for. I love you so much I wanted to stop traveling so I could spend all my time with you.
I have three amazing kids in my life that I love as my own. I never thought I would have a family. But because of you, I have one now. And, I have the possibility to have one of my own. You have no idea how much joy the kids have brought me. Or how much joy you have brought into my life. If we never have a child of our own, I won't feel like I missed out on anything. You and the children have made me feel that my life is complete.
Thank you so much for the last five months. I look forward to the rest of my life with you.
I love you,
Grace
He read my love letter and then looked up at me. I could see a shimmer in his eyes. “I love you so much.” was all he said.
“I love you too. Let’s eat.” I said and smiled at him.
He returned my smile and started eating. I must say, dinner was delicious. We enjoyed it tremendously. We talked, just talked about us, the family, our future. We drank the bottle of wine and just enjoyed the evening. It was the best Valentine’s Day I have ever had.
At the end of the meal, Pete leaned back in his chair and sighed a happy and content sigh. “This was delicious. Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome. I have to say, I think I did a pretty good job on it.” I flashed him a grin. I got up and started clearing the table.
“I’m gonna go check on the kids. I’ll be right back.” Pete said as he left the dining room.
I headed to the kitchen with our plates. He came into the kitchen as I was loading the dishwasher.
“How’re they doing out there?” I asked him.
“Fine. Having a great time. But they want you to come out and kiss them goodnight before they go to sleep.” He walked over to me as he was talking and helped me clean up the kitchen.
Once we had the kitchen cleaned up he turned to me and said, “Come on, let’s go out and say goodnight to the kids. I want to take you upstairs.” He wrapped his arms around my waist. He kissed me once and then let me go. “I have a joint we can smoke in the tub if you want.”
“Oh, Hell yes. Let’s go say goodnight to them and go upstairs.”
We went outside and got goodnight hugs and kisses from Marvel and Saint. I got a goodnight hug from Bronx and he told me to just enjoy the night with his dad. If he needed anything he would send us a text. But he thought they would be just fine. We left the backdoor unlocked so they could come in if they needed to.
Pete took me upstairs and ran a bath for us. He then took his time and undressed me. He told me he wanted to do it so I let him. He was slow and took his time to kiss and touch me all over as he undressed me. We spent some time in a nice hot bath before he took me to bed. It was slow and love filled. Being with him was the best I’ve ever had. It was a wonderful Valentine's day.
