I woke up that night to an empty bed. When I looked at the clock I realized I had only been asleep for a little while. Pete wasn’t in bed with me and his absence was what had woken me.
I got out of bed to look for him. He wasn’t in my room so I pulled on a robe and headed downstairs. I found him sitting in the kitchen with Cloud.
“Hey. Did we wake you?” Pete asked me when he saw me in the doorway.
I shook my head and said, “Woke up and you weren’t there. So I came looking for you.” I headed to the table and joined the two of them.
“Sissy, I’m so sorry about tonight. Bob and I have been talking since Thanksgiving. We both wanted to give Mom a chance to make things right with you. I thought she would behave at the restaurant.” Cloud apologized to me.
“I appreciate the apology. I knew I wasn’t the daughter she always wanted. But I didn’t know she didn’t love me. I feel like I have no family.”
“You have me and Heather. We love you. And Heather told me tonight that she doesn’t want Mom in our lives anymore. She flat out said she will never allow Mom to meet any children we have. And you have Bob. He said this was Mom’s last chance. He’s going to file for divorce.”
“You have me too.” Pete said. “And Mom and Dad. They love you. Dad was so impressed by you. And Hills and Drew love you, so do Andy and Ash. Patrick thinks you’re perfect for me and he adores you. Marie and Joe think you're awesome. You have all of us.” He reached over and took my hand. “I love you, Sky. We’ll make our own family.”
I looked at him and smiled. “Lots of babies.”
He grinned at me and said, “At least four.”
“Can I make you some tea or something?” Cloud asked.
“No, I’m ok. But thank you.”
“You wanna head back up?” Pete asked.
I nodded and stood up.
“Sissy, I really am sorry. Bob and I really didn’t think Mom would be so vile.”
“I know. Apology accepted. Please don’t worry about it.
Cloud stood up and came around the table to hug me. I hugged him back. I knew he didn’t mean for the evening to go the way it did.
Pete and I went back to bed. I didn’t get back to sleep right away. And I know Pete didn’t sleep either. I tossed and turned for a while before finally falling back to sleep. When I woke up again it was morning.
Pete was already awake and up. When I found him he and Andy were talking in the kitchen. When I came in they both asked how I was and if I wanted breakfast. I opted for coffee to start with.
“So, Andy and I have been talking. Ash is ready to leave too. We’ve been looking at moving companies. I think we found one. They will come in, pack everything for us and drive it across the country for us.” Pete was telling me.
“This place has good reviews. They’re a little pricey, but it should be worth it.” Andy said.
“If it gets me out of here fast, I’ll pay whatever the price.” I said.
“Don’t worry about the price. I’ll take care of it.” Pete said.
“No. I can pay for the movers.” I started to argue.
“Sky, I just want to get you home as quickly as possible. And Andy wants Ash out of here a.s.a.p. too. We think this might be the way to go. What do you think?”
“Yes. I like the idea. Let’s move forward with this.”
“I’ll call them today and see when they can move you out. You and Ash. Is she ready to leave Andy?”
“No, she’s working until the end of the week. But she can leave as soon as Sunday.” Andy told us.
“Might be easiest to just have them come on Monday.” I said. Then a question came up. “What about my car? I haven’t sold it yet.”
“We need some way of getting to California. Let’s just dive there. We can go to Chicago and visit with Mom and Dad and pick up Hemmy. Then head to L.A.”
“A road trip?”
He trimmed at me. “Yep. And from what I’m seeing on the website for the movers we can schedule when they deliver everything. So we can take our time driving across the country.”
“Okay. Have them come on Monday. I’ll be ready for them. We can leave for Chicago the same day if you want. But I’m ready to move.”
Pete and Andy set it up so the moving company came on Monday and packed Ash and I up. Since we had the room in the truck I ended up taking everything else no one wanted like the other bookcases and my bed. Pete didn’t have a guest bed so he said bring it.
We left D.C. on Tuesday and headed to his parents house. We took two days to drive there. And as he had promised, his parents wanted us to stay and visit for a few days. We were set up in Pete’s old bedroom. But, instead of two twin beds, there was one Queen size bed there for us. Dale told me that she and Peter decided that since they knew Pete had met the one for him there wasn’t a reason to have twin beds in his room anymore. I was his forever, they knew that and approved of me.
We had scheduled the movers to arrive at Pete’s place 2 weeks after they packed me up. That gave us plenty of time to visit in Chicago for a few days. We spent time with his family and with Patrick and Joe and Marie.
We got to L.A. a few days before the movers. I was settling in when they arrived. They uploaded the truck and unpacked everything for me. I was completely moved in long before the band had to go back on the road. I was planning on going with them this time.
I spent the summer trying to work while on the road with them. It wasn’t as successful as we had hoped but I made it work. I made it work well enough that I continued to travel with them or him, whenever they were on tour.
On November 3rd 2007, one year to the day of when we met, Pete moved my Claddagh ring from my right hand to my left.
We were on the couch together, watching a movie when he asked, “You know what today is, don’t you?”
“It’s Sunday.” I answered. Then I turned to him and grinned. “It’s November 3rd. We met one year ago today.” I didn’t really count this as our anniversary, that I counted on the date he came back to visit me. But it was still a very special day.
He grinned at me and took hold of my right hand. He removed my ring and taking my left hand he slipped it onto my ring finger.
“It’s been long enough. Let’s make this official. Please marry me.”
“Of course I’ll marry you.” I told him before kissing him.
We got married in June 2008. My mother wasn’t invited but Bob was. Cloud walked me down the aisle and gave me away. It was just the best day ever. Surrounded by the people that love us and filled with love and happiness.
I stopped taking my birth control after the wedding. Our oldest was born just after our first anniversary. Our family is still growing. As I had predicted years before, he is a fantastic Dad.
Now it’s 2024 and Fall Out Boy is bigger than ever. They went through some bad times as a band. They took a five year break from each other. But they came back with a bang. And they are stronger than ever in their friendship.
Shortly after moving in with Pete, I took a job with a videogame developer. They were already well known and had some very popular games out. They liked my work so much they offered me a full time position. I took it and have done very well for myself there. I now head the art department for one of their best selling franchises.
It’s been seventeen years, six more albums, five kids, with number six on the way, and I’m still so in love with him. He still tells me I’m his anchor and his future. I still think he’s the sexist man I've ever met and tell him that all the time. We’re still very happy together and love being parents. I think we’re pretty good at it too. The kids seem to be happy and are growing too fast for my liking. Our oldest is fourteen already.
That night so long ago, ended up being the best thing to happen to me.
