The next morning I got up and got ready to go. I pulled on a pair of jeans and one of the tee shirts Pete had sent me. I also grabbed one of the hoodies. I liked the clothes he had sent me.
I got the small cooler out of the utility room and washed it out. I grabbed one of my smaller totebags and threw in my wallet, sunglasses, camera, and some other things I wanted to bring. I didn’t want to carry around my purse. I took everything out to my car and loaded the cooler in the trunk.
I have two cars. My day to day car is a Toyota Camery. My fun car is a cherry red 1969 Ford Mustang convertible. It was a beautiful day, so I put the top down. I had wanted this car since I was in high school. I saved up for years and bought it a few years ago.
I headed in the direction of the hotel Pete was staying at. I stopped at the grocery store first. I picked up something for lunch. Sandwich stuff and some drinks, and ice to keep everything cold. When I was happy with the selection I paid and took it out to the car. Then I went to pick up Pete.
I knocked on his door and waited for him to answer. When he opened the door he looked like he was still half asleep.
“Hey.” He said as he smiled at me.
“Good morning. Are you ready to go?” I asked, smiling back at him.
“Yeah, I think so. Come on Hemmy.” He called the dog over. Cute dog too. I bent down and petted Hemmy.
“Nice outfit you have on.” Pete teased me.
“You like? A friend of mine sent it to me. I think he has pretty good taste for a guy who isn’t gay.” I teased back.
Pete laughed and then said. “I have to agree with you. Good taste and definitely not gay.”
“Come on, let’s go.” I said and led the way out to the car.
“Wholy shit! This is your car?” Pete exclaimed when he realized which car was mine. He hadn’t seen it the night before because I keep it in the garage.
I grinned and said, “My teenage dream come true. Saved for years, but she was worth it.”
The weather was beautiful. It was mid September and the sky was clear. It wasn’t supposed to get over 75 and a light breeze was blowing. A perfect day for a drive in the country.
“So, where are we going?” Pete asked me when we got on the road.
“Skyline Drive. It’s in the Shenandoah National Park. You see those mountains in the distance?” I asked as I pointed them out to him.
“Yeah.” He said.
“Well, those are the Blue Ridge Mountains and that’s where we’re going.” I told him. “It’s about an hour and a half drive from here. It’s beautiful up there. I think you’ll like it.” I said. “Have you had breakfast?” If he wanted something to eat it was easier to stop before we got out of town.
“Yeah, I had room service.” He told me. “You know, I’ve always wanted to drive a car like this. Big engine. Very sexy.” He barked out a big laugh. “And I thought I would impress you with the rented Porch.”
“If you really want to impress me, show up in a ‘59 Corvette, convertible. Teal, white interior.” I glanced over at him and he just flashed his grin at me. I couldn’t help it and grinned back.
“You’re a gear head!”
“No, not really. My Dad, brothers, uncles are all mechanics. I grew up around vintage cars.” I said with a shrug. “I learned how to drive on a ‘68 VW Bug, semi-automatic.”
“What’s a semi-automatic?” he asked.
“Gear shift, no clutch. You still have to lift your foot off the gas and shift with the gear shift, but you don’t have the clutch to deal with. Dad taught me when I was 14.”
“How big is your family?”
“Mom, Dad, five older brothers, and then me. I’m the only girl.”
“Five brothers? Damn. Do I need to worry about them?” He asked.
I laughed and said, “Nah, they aren’t the ones to worry about. You need to worry about me. My brothers made sure I know how to handle myself.” I glanced at him after I said that. He flashed me a devilish grin.
We talked about all kinds of things as we drove up the mountains. The drive up really is beautiful. If you ever find yourself in the Northern Virginia area, make the time to visit Skyline Drive. You won’t regret it. We got to the entrance and headed south, my favorite route to take. I pulled over at the first overlook we came to and got out of the car.
“This is simply amazing.” Pete said after a few minutes of silence. “This view is amazing. What are we looking at?”
“The Shenandoah Valley. Do you see the river? Over there. See it?” I pointed the river out to him. It was way off in the distance, you could barely see it. It was just a shimmer on the valley floor glinting in the sunlight really.
“Yeah, I see it. Is this your favorite place?” he asked, turning to me.
“No, but I do love this view.” I told him. I grabbed my camera when we got out of the car. Like I always do, I took some pictures. I turned the camera on Pete and snapped a few of him too. He pulled his own camera out and took some pictures of the view. Then he turned his camera towards me and snapped off a few.
“Come on, there’s still more to see.” I said getting back into the car. I took my time, stopping at each overlook until we came to one of my favorite places, Mary Rock Tunnel. It’s a tunnel through the rock of the mountain. I love driving through it. We stopped on both sides of it just to look at it and to take pictures.
I pulled off at one of my favorite places to hike. Parking the car I got out and opened the trunk. I opened the cooler and pulled out some water bottles. I handed one to Pete and took one myself. Then I stuffed my bag with the food, we weren’t going far and the food would stay cold. I also grabbed a blanket I keep in the car just in case. The three of us headed down the trail and I took Pete to my other favorite place. It’s a hidden meadow, unless you knew it was there you’d walk right past it.
“This is my favorite place.” I told Pete.
“Wow. How did you ever find this place?” He asked me.
“I found this the second year I lived here. I came up here with some friends and we stumbled across it. I’ve been coming back ever since.” I explained to him. I spread out the blanket and we settled in for a picnic.
“You didn’t grow up around here?” He asked as we ate our lunch.
“I grew up in Seattle. I moved out here to go to college. I’ve been here ever since.” I told him.
“What made you stay?” He asked.
“I married Jason.” I told him simply.
He only nodded. We ate the rest of our lunch in a comfortable silence. When we were through I stretched out on my back and basked in the sun. The warm sun felt good on my face. I closed my eyes and stretched my arms over my head. I enjoyed the contrast of the cool air and the warm sun. You could hear the birds in the trees that surrounded us.
After a few minutes something blocked the light to my face. I opened my eyes to Pete’s honey brown ones looking down at me. He didn’t say anything. I smiled up at him and he smiled back down at me.
“Do you love him?” He asked me. I knew who he was talking about.
“Yes.” I told him.
He changed position and sat on my hips. His weight felt comfortable. I had no desire for him to move. He placed his hands on either side of me and leaned over me.
“Do you love him as much as you did when you married him?” He was so intense when he asked me. His gaze didn’t leave mine.
I knew the answer to that, but I really didn’t want to admit it. But for some reason, I couldn’t lie to him. “No. No I don’t.” I hadn’t been in love with Jason for years. And I suspected he wasn’t in love with me anymore either.
“Then why do you stay?” He leaned in a little closer with each question.
“I haven’t had a reason to. He isn’t a bad person. We have a good life together.” I answered truthfully.
“If I gave you a reason to leave, would you?” He asked, leaning a little closer. His lips were almost on mine.
“What could you offer me, Pete?” I asked in a whisper. I wanted to know the answer, but I was afraid of it.
“Me.” That was all he said before his lips crashed into mine. This time I didn’t fight him. I kissed him back. My arms wrapped around his neck and I pulled him down on top of me. I didn’t think, I just enjoyed it.
His lips left mine and moved to my neck. He was turning me on in ways Jason had never done before. His fingers found a patch of exposed skin on my stomach, and it made me shiver. He started to run his hand up under my shirt. That’s when I snapped back to reality.
“Pete, we can’t do this. I can’t do this. Please stop.” I begged him as I pushed at him.
“Lizzy, I want you. Can you say that about Jason?” He asked me.
“I…I don’t know. But I do know that I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I did cheat. It doesn’t matter how much I want you. And I do Pete, I really do. But I’m not free to take what I want.”
Pete sighed and sat up, but stayed on my hips. “I’m not going to give up on you Lizzy. I’m offering you me. And everything I have. I’ll wait for you.” He got up and offered me his hand. I sat up and took it. He helped me up and wrapped his arms around me and pulled me to him. All he did was hug me.
We headed back to the car and I turned around and headed back the way we came. I didn’t get off at the entrance we came in at. Instead I kept going north. We pulled over at the different overlooks and took pictures. We kept the conversation light and fun. We laughed and had a good time. I finally took us back down the mountain and back to town.
We had dinner together before I took him and Hemmy back to his hotel. I walked him to his room and said goodbye. He was leaving tomorrow morning and I wouldn’t see him again for a long time. In fact I wasn’t sure when I would see him again.
I went home with thoughts swimming around in my head. Did Jason still love me? Was he still in love with me? Did I love him enough to make this marriage work? Would Pete be worth leaving my life for?
All I knew was I needed to talk to Jason before I could make up my mind.
That was not a conversation I was looking forward to.
