I tried to go back to my normal life after Pete left. But it was hard. I couldn’t keep him out of my head. My life was coming to a fork in the road and I didn’t know which way to go. I could stay on the path I had been on, or I could turn off into the unknown.

Jason called every night just as he always did. But our conversations were short, and a bit strained. Something was happening to us, and I don’t think it was completely because of Pete. Part of it was, but not all of it. Something was going on with Jason. I just couldn’t figure it out.

I got emails and phone calls from Pete just about everyday. He was true to his word, he wasn’t giving up on me. He is a persistent little man. Some of his emails were, for lack of a better word, erotic. He told me in detail just what he wanted to do to me. And I wanted to let him do those things. Some of his emails were really just love letters. I found myself amazed by the way he used words.

Jason came home and things were ok. Not wonderful, but not terrible. He had been home for almost a week before I got the guts to talk to him. I made us a nice dinner and we talked about nothing special. After dinner he went into the living room and sat behind his laptop, just like he always does. I followed him into the room and took my normal seat on the couch. It took me a few minutes to ask what I needed to know.

“Jason?” I started.

He didn’t even look over at me. “Yeah?”

“Are you happy?” I asked, and then held my breath waiting for his answer.

“What do you mean Lizzy?” He asked, still not looking at me.

“Are you happy? In this marriage, are you happy?”

His head snapped up and he finally looked at me. “I…Why are you asking?” He didn’t answer me. He had a strange look on his face. It passed so quickly I couldn’t read it.

“You don’t seem happy anymore Jason. I…I want you to be happy. Something is going on with us, and I can’t figure it out. Talk to me. Please.” I pleaded.

He slowly closed his laptop and took his time answering me. “What brought this on? What are you getting at Liz?” He asked me.

“Jay, I need to know. Do you still love me? Are you still happy in this marriage? Because, I don’t believe you are. We haven’t had sex in I don’t know how long. The last time I tried to touch you, you pushed me away. We barely talk to each other. Just tell me the truth. Do you want to stay in this marriage?” A part of me wanted him to say no, and a part of me wanted him to say yes.

He got upset, I could see it in his face. “No Lizzy, I haven’t been really happy for some time now.” He turned away from me and got up. He started to pace the floor in front of the TV.

“I’m not happy either, Jay. And I’m not in love with you anymore.” I blurted this out fast. I knew if I didn’t say it right then, I would never say it.

Jason stopped dead and turned to face me. He was angry, very angry. He opened his mouth and said, “I’ve been sleeping with someone else.”

Those words hit me like a slap in the face. I really didn’t think he would do something like that. I stood there in shock for a few seconds. “That explains a lot. It explains why you haven’t wanted to touch me in months. And why you’ve been so distant with me. Why didn’t you just leave me?” I had to ask.

“Because, I do still love you. Just not in the way I used to. I didn’t want to hurt you. You’re my wife Lizzy. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but it did. And I think…I think I’m falling in love with her. I’m sorry Lizzy.”

I just stood where I was. I nodded once to acknowledge I heard him. I finally looked at him and said, “I think we should split up. I want a divorce.” It was liberating to say that. Scary as fuck, but liberating.

I went upstairs and packed an overnight bag. I went back down and packed up my laptop and everything else I needed for work the next day. Jason wasn’t there, and really I didn’t care where he was. I left. I ended up at a hotel for the night. I was too proud to show up at a friend’s doorstep. And I didn’t have anywhere else to go.

I called a lawyer the next day and started the paperwork on the divorce. Jason agreed to move out of the house. He went to live with his new girlfriend. No matter how unhappy I had been in the marriage, it still hurt worse than I thought it could. It was still my marriage, and I hated to see it crumble.

I didn’t tell Pete much of what was going on at first. I didn’t want him to get the idea that he had caused it. My feelings for him had added to it, that much was true. But I think it was inevitable that my marriage would dissolve.

After Jason had moved out I decided to tell Pete what was going on. I sat down and typed everything out. The whole story. I told him everything, including how I felt about him. I told him the truth, I wasn’t in love with him, but I did have feelings for him. I wasn’t ready to jump into a relationship right now, but things could change.

Pete didn’t respond to my email right away. In fact it was three days later when I heard from him again. I had pretty much left the ball in his court, so to speak. He knew where he stood with me. Now I was just waiting for him to make the next move.

When I did hear back from him it was a short email.

Lizzy,
I can’t say I’m too sorry about you and Jason.
But I know you’re hurting, and I am sorry for that.
I can’t get away to see you right now.
We’re going to be in the area for a show soon. Will you come?
I’ll send you a ticket and a pass. Just let me know.

All my love,
Pete

Pete,
Of course I’ll come to your show.
I know you’re busy. I didn’t expect you to just drop everything for me.
Send the ticket and the pass.
I’ll see you then.

Love,
Lizzy

It had only been two weeks since Jason and I split up, and just over a month since I spent the day with Pete. My life had completely turned upside down. I still found it hard to believe it had happened so fast.

What happened next was even more unexpected.
