I was sleeping in on a Saturday morning when I heard the knocking on the front door. I looked at the clock and it read 6:17AM. What the fuck? Who could that be? I thought to myself. I got up, pulled my robe on and went downstairs. I looked through the peephole to see who it was. Jason was standing out there. I opened the door.

“Jason, what are you doing here?” I asked him as I let him in.

“Hi Lizzy. I'm sorry if I woke you up.” He tried to hug me, but I stepped away from him.

“What do you want?” I asked again.

“I want to come home. I want us to work this out. I don’t want to lose you.” He told me.

“Jay…I can’t do that.” I said, shaking my head. “But come in, and we’ll talk. Would you like some coffee?” I asked heading into the kitchen. I could tell by looking at him he was tired.

“Yeah, that would be nice. Thank you.” He accepted my offer. We went into the kitchen and I started a pot of coffee.

“What’s going on Jay? I thought you were with her?” I asked, sitting across from him at the kitchen table.

“I miss you Liz. I was a fool to leave you. I was a fool to cheat on you. You were the best thing to ever happen to me, and I threw it away. Take me back Lizzy, please take me back.” I had never heard Jason plead with me like that.

“It’s only been two weeks. What’s going on? Why do you want to come back? I thought you were in love with your new girl?” He didn’t answer me. The coffee was done by this point and I got up to make us a couple of cups.

“She’s pregnant Lizzy.” He said to me. I had my back turned to him. I chuckled just a little when he said that.

I turned to face him and said. “Let me guess, she’s trying to tell you it’s yours?”

“Yeah she is.”

I came back to the table with the coffee and sat back down. “Didn’t you tell her?” Jason couldn’t father children. He had made sure of that himself when he had a vasectomy six years ago.

“Last night I did. After I said some pretty horrible things to her. I’m not proud of myself Lizzy.” He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “I’m not proud of a lot of things. I’m not proud of what I did to us. I want to come home. Please let me come home.” He begged me.

“No. No you can’t come back. It’s over for us.” I told him.

“I still love you Lizzy.”

“I still love you too Jason, but I’m not in love with you anymore. I haven’t been in love with you for years now. I’m tired of trying to make us work.” I told him.

“When…When did you stop loving me?” He asked. He sounded so pitiful, and dejected.

“I don’t really know. I’ve known for a few years now.” I confessed to him.

“Why didn’t you leave?” He asked me.

“You didn’t give me any reason to. Not until now, anyway. And, I wanted to try to work things out with you. I didn’t want to just give up on us.”

We were interrupted by the door bell ringing. I got up to answer the door. To my delighted surprise, Pete was standing on my doorstep this time.

“Pete! I didn’t think I would see you until next month.” I said as I threw myself into his arms.

“I couldn’t wait. We start the tour in a couple of days. I called in a few favors and managed to get the weekend off.” He told me as he hugged me back.

“Come in. I’m really glad you’re here.” I told him as I ushered him in the house. He stopped dead in his tracks a few feet in. Jason was standing in the middle of the living room.

“Who the fuck are you? Who is this Liz?” Jason asked me.

I sighed deeply and said. “This is Pete. Pete, this is Jason. My soon to be ex-husband. He was just leaving.” I told the two men.

“You’ve moved on already?! That was fast. I thought you said you never cheated?” Jason sneered.

“Oh, that’s real rich coming from you! And I never cheated on you!” I snapped at him.

“You’re nothing but a fucking whore! A liar and a whore!” Jason yelled at me.

“Don’t talk to her like that! You have no right to talk to her like that! You’re the one who couldn’t keep it in his pants!” Pete yelled at Jason, moving to get in-between the two of us.

Jason sneered at Pete. “You don’t know what you’re talking about kid. So, shut the fuck up, and stay out of it.”

“Jason, you need to leave.” I said sternly.

“Why? So you and Emo Boy here can fuck? You’re robbing the cradle Lizzy. I thought that was beneath you. I don’t believe for a minute you didn’t cheat on me. You’ve probably fucked all the kids in the neighborhood, haven’t you?” Jason spat at me.

“Fuck you! You’re the only one I’ve ever slept with. The only one! I stayed faithful to you because I foolishly thought you still loved me enough to be faithful to me. We both know how wrong I was. Leave, just get out!” I said pointing to the door.

Jason crossed over to me, pushing Pete out of the way. He grabbed my arm. “Fuck you Lizzy!” He grabbed my other arm and started to shake me. “My mother was right about you. You’re nothing but trash and I could have done so much better!” He shoved me up against the wall, making me hit the back of my head. I had never been afraid of Jay before, but the look in his eyes scared me.

Pete tried to pull him off of me. But Jason is a big man. He has at least six inches and fifty pounds on Pete. I’m not really too sure who threw the first punch, but I think it was Jason. All I know is, I saw Pete get hit in the face and then he hit back. Then Jason grabbed Pete by the front of his shirt, pushing Pete backwards into the bookcase. I pulled myself away from the wall and tried to pull Jason off of him.

“Stop this! Stop this right now!” I yelled at both of them. I stepped forward to grab Jason’s arm. That’s when I got hit. Jason backhanded me across the face. Everything stopped. Both men were still and quiet.

“You son of a bitch! Don’t touch her! Don’t you ever fucking touch her again!” Pete yelled. He scrambled up and took another swing at Jason.

“Stop! Stop it!” I put my hands up and grabbed both of them. But I got them to stop.

“Lizzy, are you ok? I’m sorry, I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to hit you.” Jason tried to apologize.

“Leave now, or I’m calling the cops.” I said to him, Jay stood then for a minute, he didn’t say anything else. Then he turned and left.

I turned and looked at Pete. “Are you ok?” I asked him. He had blood coming from his lip and it looked like one of his eyes was starting to swell.

“I’ll be ok. What about you? Did he hurt you?” He asked me with more concern for me then himself. He gently touched my face where Jason’s hand had struck it.

“I’m fine. But we need to clean you up. Come on.” I took his hand and led him to the kitchen. I made him sit down and I got a dish towel from the drawer. I cleaned him up and brought him some ice for the swelling. His lip was split, but not badly. And it looked like his left eye was going to darken to a nice shiner.

“How’s that?” I asked him when I was done.

“Better, thanks. Come here.” He said as he pulled me into his lap. “Are you sure you’re alright?” He gently brushed aside a lock of hair that was hanging in my face. His fingers lightly tracing my cheek bone.

“Yeah, I’m ok. Thanks for being my knight in shining armor.” I said, smiling at him.

“You’re welcome. Has he ever hit you before?”

“No. I don’t think he even meant to. I think I just got in the way.” I said. Really I think the blow was meant for Pete and not me.

“What was he doing here Lizzy?”

“He wanted to come home. He asked me to take him back.” I told him.

“Please tell me you didn’t.” Pete said, looking a little nervous.

“No I didn’t.” I assured him with a smile and a slight chuckle.

“Good.” He said before he cupped my cheek and pulled me to him. His kiss was soft and amazing.

And this time I didn’t have to stop him.
