On their way back from the Far Frozen, a strange whirring sound stopped Danny in his tracks. Chelsea paused by his side.
“What is it?” she asked.
He was pale and looked around frantically. “It could be an enemy of mine. C’mon, we gotta get out of here.”
He zoomed off, Chelsea right after him, but no matter how fast they flew, the sound grew louder.
“It’s getting closer!” Chelsea yelled over the roar.
Danny looked behind him and gaped. Chelsea looked, too.
A giant tornado chased them, spinning with green and purple and black. Doors were collected in its girth. For the first time since entering the Ghost Zone, a wind tugged at Chelsea’s clothes.
“What is that?” she asked.
“I don’t know!” Danny shouted.
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“I’ve never seen anything like it in the Ghost Zone before!”
They struggled to continue flying, but the wind drew them in. When it appeared hopeless, Danny grabbed Chelsea and threw a shield around them. They were picked up by the tornado and tossed among the doors and other debris. Chelsea closed her eyes and squeezed Danny. When would it be over?
The shield kept them together. Rocks and doors crashed against it, making Chelsea flinch each time. Danny held her head against his chest, and his other arm was wrapped around her body. If the shield failed, he would protect her. It was his nature. She didn’t want him hurt, though, so she added her power to the shield, just in case. Maybe the two of them could get out of that storm alive. Or, half alive.
Wait, that gave Chelsea an idea. She turned her head so she could be heard and said, “Turn human!”
“What?”
“Turn human! Didn’t you say humans can phase through things in the Ghost Zone?”
“Right!”
At the same time, the rings of transformation appeared, and they both became human. Chelsea stopped powering the shield, but Danny didn’t. They were still buffeted by the tornado.
“Drop your shield!” Chelsea said.
“But we’ll get killed!”
“It’s the only way. What’s the point of being human if we still have a ghost shield?”
Danny hesitated. Chelsea wondered if he would listen to her. Then the shield vanished.
It was a weird sensation. The feeling of the wind was gone. The tornado moved on, leaving Chelsea and Danny floating in the middle of nowhere.
Before she could orient herself, he held her at arm’s length, looking her over.
“Are you okay? Did you get hurt?” he asked.
“I’m fine,” she said, but inside, she wasn’t. She just wanted to get home and lie down.
“You’re shaking,” Danny said gently. He pulled her back into a hug.
Tears sprang into her eyes. They were okay. Why was she acting like this? Even though her thoughts rebelled, she didn’t want him to let go. She was safe in his arms.
Eventually, he did, though. Chelsea wiped her eyes while he looked around.
“Do you know where we are?” she asked, her voice steady.
Danny didn’t answer at first. He examined the landmarks, if you could call them that, but his body became stiff.
“Danny…” Chelsea prompted.
He bit his lip.
“We’re lost, aren’t we?” she asked quietly.
Hesitantly, he nodded. “I… I’ve never been in this area of the Ghost Zone before.”
The tears came back, and Chelsea took a few deep breaths. It’s not like they could look where the sun was to determine north. There was no north and south in the Ghost Zone. There was just… floating. In nothing. Nothing but green and purple. Islands and doors.
Danny saw her panicking and hurriedly said, “I’ll get us home. Don’t worry. We can’t be too far from the portal.”
“H-how do you know?”
“We were flying toward the portal when the tornado hit us,” he said, “and it’s not like it picked us up and changed direction. I think.”
“You think?”
“Well, we are lost. Don’t cry. I’ll figure this out. C’mon, this way.”
Transforming, Danny took Chelsea’s hand and led her in a seemingly random direction. She hoped it was the right one, but how could they know?
