A not so restful night

Shadow led Maria and the hedgehogs inside his house.
“So now what? Manic asked.
Shadow motioned to a box full of clothes he was planning on dropping off at his local Goodwill. “See if there’s something you can wear.” He said. “You can get cleaned up in the bathroom. It’s down the hall, the first room on the left. Then we’ll have dinner.”
Sonia hugged Shadow. “Thank you so much.”
Shadow flinched. “You’re welcome.”
Maria giggled.
Sonia let Shadow go and started digging in the box with the others.
Shadow walked into the kitchen and called Rouge. He leaned against the counter, staring out the window.
“I didn’t suspect to hear from you so soon.” Rouge said. “Business or pleasure?”
“Business.” Shadow replied. “Pretty sure I stumbled across a trafficking ring. I was asked to deliver a crate. Three hedgehogs and a human girl named Maria Robotnik were in it.”
“I’ll check.” Rouge said. She typed on her keyboard. “They’re taking a big risk with Maria; her grandfather and cousin are well known. Ah, here we go. Good thing I’m already on a trafficking case.”
“I told you I’d get you some info if I could.” Shadow replied. “I don’t know about Gerald Robotnik, but Ivo is behind it.”
“Okay, I’m not seeing anything for Maria, but there’s three new listings for hedgehogs.” Rouge said. “It’s one female and two males. I’m sending the pictures now. Let me know when you get them.”
Shadow looked through the photos Rouge had sent. “Yeah, I got them.” He said. “That’s them and I was right.”
“Poor kids.” Rouge replied. “Be careful, handsome. They’re not above trying to kill you for messing with their business.”
“Who’s that?” Sonia asked.
Shadow turned around, seeing Sonia (wearing an old hoodie over her leggings) standing there.
Rouge laughed. “Ooh, sounds like someone’s jealous.” She said, “I’ll call you with more info later.”
Shadow hung up. “It’s an old friend in the police department.”
“You were a cop?” Sonia asked.
“No, a GUN agent.” Shadow replied. “Rouge became a cop after she left the agency.”
Sonia nodded. “And you?”
“It varies.” Shadow said.
Shadow and Sonia headed back into the living room.
Manic and Sonic were wearing t-shirts while Maria had on a hoodie over her leggings like Sonia.
“I hate to ask, but we’re all hungry.” Sonic said.
“We haven't eaten since before the concert.” Manic added.
“I have some orange and spicy chicken in the fridge.” Shadow said. “There’s some beef stir fry too. Help yourselves. There’s plates and cups in the cabinet by the fridge. Get water from the cooler.”

Sonia cleared the dishes away.
“I’ll get you some ice cream.” Shadow said, pulling coffee flavored ice cream out of the freezer. “You could use some.”
Manic looked at the window. “Why are there lights outside?”
Shadow dropped the ice cream. “The Garage. Now.” He said, taking Sonia by her arm.
Shadow led the way to the garage, dragging Sonia along.
Sonic and Manic helped Maria up and ran after Shadow.
Shadow drove away.
Manic looked out the back window as the house exploded.
“Was that the house?” Maria asked. She turned around. “What is going on?”
“You were being trafficked and they don’t like that I’m not taking you to Port Mobius.” Shadow said.
Sonia gasped.
Manic and Sonic grit their teeth.
“What?” Maria asked. “What does that mean?”
Shadow glanced at Maria. “You don’t want to know.”
Manic ducked down. “I think someone’s following us.”
“Get down.” Shadow said. He stepped on the gas.
Manic and Sonia were hanging onto the door panel while Maria hung onto Manic.
Sonic grinned. “Awesome!” He exclaimed. “Go faster!”
“Hush, Sonic.” Sonia scolded.
Shadow glanced in the rear view mirror. “Sonic, Manic, do you two know how to use guns?”
“No way.” Sonic said.
“I do.” Manic replied.
“It’s in the console.” Shadow said.
Manic eased forward and got the gun out of the console. “Switch seats with me, bro.”
“Are you crazy?” Sonic asked.
“Move over, Sonic.” Shadow ordered.
Sonic slid over and let Manic trade places.
Manic rolled the window down and fired a few shots at the car. He slid back in his seat. “Huh. Robots driving cars.”
“Of course Robotnik sent robots out.” Shadow said. “I think you slowed them down.”
**
Shadow pulled the car into Rouge’s driveway. “Alright.” He said. “We’ll stay here for the night.”
Shadow, the hedgehogs, and Maria got out of the car and hurried up the driveway.
Rouge opened the door before Shadow knocked on the door. “What happened?”
“Robotnik blew up my house.” Shadow said. “We need a place to stay for the night.”
Rouge stepped aside. “Come in.”
Shadow led the hedgehogs and Maria inside the house.
Rouge did a double take. “Sonic Underground?”
“You know our band?” Sonic asked.
Rouge shut the door. “I saw your set at the amphitheater in East Mobius a few months ago.” She replied. She looked over Maria and Sonia. “I’ll get you two some clothes and some blankets for all of you.”
“So now what? Manic asked.
