Sonic huffed and tapped his foot impatiently as he waited in the self-checkout line. "Why did I even go to Walmart?" He thought. "Knux is right: this place is a den of madness."

The only reason he was even here was to surprise Sally with a Christmas gift (a new iPad) and this was the only store that had it in stock. Also, since they shared a bank account, he couldn't just order it without her getting the notification for the purchase.

Sonic happened to glance at the gift card rack and saw a bunch of Amazon gift cards.

He slapped his hand over his face. "Why didn't I think of that earlier?" He muttered. He checked his watch.

Three in the afternoon and he still had to go to Five Below to get a few little things for his and Sally's kids: Lola and River.

The line finally moved up and Sonic stepped up. Now, he was next in line. He set the ipad, gift bag, and tissue paper on the conveyor belt.

Sonic's smart watch started vibrating.

Sally was calling him.

Sonic answered his phone. "Hey, Sal, I'm sorry. I'm stuck in a long line."

"That's fine." Sally said. "You'll be home pretty quickly anyway."

"I still gotta run to Five Below to get that… puzzle or whatever." Sonic replied. "Oh, and something else for you."

Sally sighed. "So you won't be home for dinner?"

"Not sure." Sonic said. "I- oh. It's my turn. See you in a few."

Sonic hung up.
**
Sonic left Five Below with the puzzle and some accessories for Sally's present and checked his watch. "I'll be there just in time." He said, racing off.
**
Sonic put Sally's present in the bag and covered it with the tissue paper before heading inside.

He left the puzzle in the trunk, thinking it was best to leave it there until the kids went to bed.

Lola (a dark blue hedgehog/chipmunk hybrid with green eyes) and River (a brown hedgehog/chipmunk hybrid with blue eyes) ran over to greet Sonic.

Or, more accurately, the present.

River tried to peek in the bag. "Is that for me?"

"It could be for me, Riv." Lola said.

"No, it's for your mom." Sonic asked. "Is she in the kitchen?"

"Yeah." River and Lola replied.

Sonic raced to his and Sally's bedroom and hid Sally's presents in the back of his side of the closet, inside of his box of summer clothes.

"Sonic, dinner's ready!" Sally called.

Sonic ran into the kitchen.

Sally sighed. "I told you not to run in the house."

"Right, I'm sorry." Sonic said, sitting down at the table.

Lola huffed. "Chili dogs again?"

"It's your dad's turn to pick the meal." Sally said, sitting down beside Sonic. "You had your favorite meal last week."

"Still trying to figure out why she likes sushi." Sonic replied.

Sally furrowed her brow. "Didn't Manic like it?"

Sonic's eyes widened. "You got them a present, right?"

Sally bit her lip. "I may have to buy overnight shipping."

Sonic shrugged. "Just get them a Hot Topic gift card, they'll love it."

Sally nodded.

"Is Uncle Manic going to Grandma's this year?" River asked.

"Don't talk with your mouth full, River." Sally replied. "I'm not sure. We may have to visit him one day."

"If he's not in prison." Sonic thought.
