The Sonic underground were heading back to Mobotropolis after spending a couple of months traveling around Mobius to help in the hurricane relief efforts.
It was around ten o'clock at night and they were still an hour away from town. A gentle rain started to fall.
Sonic woke up from a nap and noticed that Manic was about to fall asleep while driving.
"Manic?" Sonic asked.
Manic flinched. "Oh, you're awake now?"
"Yeah, pull over." Sonic said. "I'll drive."
Manic pulled over and parked the van. "Thanks, bro."
Sonic and Manic switched seats.
Sonic put the van in drive and pulled away.
The wind picked up and the rain turned from a gentle mist to a heavy downpour.
Manic tapped his fingers on the dashboard. "I'll be glad when we get home."
Sonia nodded. "Uh-huh."
"You scared, sis?" Manic asked.
"Y-yeah." Sonia replied.
Manic held Sonia's hand.
The wind and rain battered the van.
Sonic stopped in a nearby abandoned gas station parking lot for a moment to wait it out.
The wind rocked the vehicle.
Manic gently squeezed Sonia's hand while gripping his seat with the other hand. "It feels like it's picking up the van."
"Shoot." Sonic yelled. He started the van and pulled it into the street. "Hold on, we gotta risk it."
Sonia, crying, slid closer to Manic and hugged him.
"I know." Manic said softly. "We'll be okay."
Sonic continued on at the safest speed he could. "We'll have to take the scenic route. I don't want to risk meeting swatbots or anything."
Manic noticed branches twisting in the wind. "Won't there be trees down?"
"Hopefully not." Sonic replied. He pulled the van down a side road.
Manic hugged Sonia. "No, not gonna die tonight; we're gonna stand and fight forever." He sang softly.
Sonic thought he heard Sonia singing too and knew she had to be scared to start singing a song from a band that only Manic liked.
Sonic's phone rang.
Sonic clicked a button on the steering wheel. "Yeah, Cyrus, it'll have to wait."
"I saw you drive by." Cyrus said. "Turn around now and come to the gray building."
Sonic turned around and went back to the building. "I know where it's at."
**
They arrived at the building and pulled it into the open garage door.
Cyrus and Trevor shut the door behind them.
The royal siblings got out.
"Go downstairs to the shelter." Cyrus said. "A tornado was spotted."
The siblings looked at each other.
"I think we were near it." Sonic said.
The siblings headed down to the shelter and huddled with the rest of the fighters in the center of the building.
Sonia hid her face in Manic's chest.
Manic and Sonic hugged Sonia.
Manic held onto Sonic's arm and shoulder.
**
Sonic woke up before everyone and went to check for damage before helping Cyrus make breakfast for everyone.
Thankfully, there wasn't any damage to any freedom fighters' homes.
There were only a few trees down (at least in this area) and an old building, that wasn't used by anyone, had collapsed.
Sonic headed back inside and found Manic and Cyrus making coffee and pancakes for everyone.
Manic yawned. "What does it look like out there?"
"Not as bad as I thought." Sonic replied. "We can probably get it all cleaned in a few days at most."
Manic nodded. "Good."
"You didn't sleep?" Sonic asked.
Manic shook his head. "Sonia finally fell asleep." He replied. "I only slept a few hours."
Sonia shuffled in.
"Sonia, Sonic, can you two help Manic while I wake up the others?" Cyrus asked.
"Sure." Sonic and Sonia replied.
Cyrus headed downstairs.
Manic and Sonia hugged Sonic.
"I know." Sonic replied. "I'm glad you're all okay too."
