calm before the storm
0 reviewsThe Robotniks have taken over. Shadow has been placed in stasis. A new invention by Tails may be the key to ending the war.

In one of the knights' quarters of the Knothole palace, Shadow sat beside his wife, Aleena, as she gently rocked their four week old son Manic in her arms.
Manic whimpered in between bouts of coughing fits.
“What did the doctor say?” Shadow asked.
Aleena bit her lip. “It doesn’t look good.” She replied. “He doesn’t know what’s wrong with Manic.”
Manic started wheezing and coughing again.
Shadow took Manic from Aleena and gently rubbed the baby’s back in a pitiful attempt to soothe him.
Aleena’s uncle Chuck hurried in. “It’s an emergency, Shadow. A strange airship was spotted near here.”
Shadow looked up. “Can’t Argus handle it?”
“Argus sent me to get you.” Uncle Chuck replied. “We can’t exactly call the king out.”
Shadow sighed and handed the still coughing Manic over to Aleena. “Maybe this won’t take long.” He said. He kissed Aleena, then got up and followed Uncle Chuck out.

Shadow stood in the corner of the armory and put on his armor. “So what’s going on?”
“A strange ship was seen hovering over the Mobius forest.” Argus said. “It’s clearly not from around here.”
Shadow nodded.
Cat picked up his sword. “How’s Manic?”
Shadow shook his head. “I don’t think he’ll make it.” He said, picking up his sword. “The doctor doesn’t know what’s wrong with him and he’s very weak.”
Argus patted Shadow on the shoulder. “I’m sorry we had to call you out.”
Shadow nodded. He roughly wiped his eyes and led his squad out.

Shadow led his squad to the ship that had just landed in a clearing and surrounded the only door they saw on it.
The metal door finally opened.
Two men, one older than the other and both shaped like eggs, strutted out of the ship.
Shadow unsheathed his sword and eyed the newcomers suspiciously, wondering if he should give his squad the word to attack.
Then, a little girl hurried over to the men. She saw Shadow and squealed. “Aww, is that a porcupine?”
“I’m a hedgehog.” Shadow said.
The girl grinned. “You can talk?”
Shadow furrowed his brow. “Yes.”
“This will make things easier.” The older man said. “I’m Dr. Gerald Robotnik and this is my grandson, Ivo, and my granddaughter, Maria. We’re here for a peaceful, scientific venture.”
“You’re a doctor?” Shadow asked.
“Yes and so is Ivo.” Gerald replied.
“Then can you help my son?” Shadow asked. “He’s been sick for a few days.”
Ivo furrowed his brow.
“We should be able to help him.” Gerald said.
Argus looked at Shadow. “Are you sure about this?”
“I’ll handle it if anything goes wrong.” Shadow replied.
Argus studied the Robotniks. “They don’t seem like much of a threat.” He said in a low tone. “We’ll inspect the ship.”
Shadow nodded. “I’ll send another squad to check on you.”

Shadow eyed Gerald and Ivo suspiciously as Gerald examined Manic in the adjoining room that Shadow and Aleena used for a nursery.
Gerald finally had a mask that was hooked to a small machine placed on Manic‘s face.
Shadow noticed the power rings on his gauntlets started flickering and discreetly slid his arms off the table. He looked around with his eyes to see if anyone noticed.
Aleena was more focused on the babies than him, Maria was playing with Shadow and Aleena’s other two babies (Sonic and Sonia), while Gerald and Ivo tended to a fretful Manic. If anyone did notice, they sure didn’t show it.
“He has pneumonia.” Gerald said, handing Manic to Aleena. “He’ll pull through with medication and the nebulizer.”
Shadow and Aleena sighed in relief.
Ivo unzipped one of their backpacks and handed a small bottle to Gerald.
“Did you two pay attention to how the nebulizer works?” Gerald asked.
“Yes, doctor.” Shadow replied.
“Just make sure he takes his medicine and uses the nebulizer.” Gerald said, handing Shadow the medicine bottle and nebulizer. He wrote down the instructions on a piece of paper, then handed it to Shadow. “I wrote the instructions down for both of you.”
“Yes, doctor.” Shadow replied. “Thank you.”
“Thank you.” Aleena said.
Maria gently pushed the stroller Sonic and Sonia were in over to Shadow. “Here you go.” She said, smiling. “Your babies are so cute.”
“Thank you.” Shadow and Aleena replied.
Maria walked Shadow and his family to the door.
Ivo pulled Gerald aside. “Why are you helping them when we could be taking this planet over?”
“For one, that wasn’t the plan to start with.” Gerald replied. “But this helps put their guard down and that black rat is vouching for us because we can keep his brat alive.”
Ivo nodded tersely.
“Do you really want to cross Shadow?” Gerald asked. “He’s stronger than he looks and is faster than earth hedgehogs. Did you notice those rings on his gauntlets?”
Ivo nodded. “They light up occasionally.”
“Mostly when he looks suspicious of us.” Gerald said. “I’d hate to find out what they do the hard way. They have made some surprisingly advanced technology for such an ancient looking society.”
Maria walked over. “Grandpa? Is Manic really going to be okay?”
Gerald patted Maria on the back. “He’ll be just fine.”

Shadow and Argus headed to the throne room to speak to King Acorn about the Robotniks.
“What did you find on the ship?” Shadow asked.
“No weapons, just the kind of stuff I expect to find in Chuck’s workshop.” Argus said. “Some of it does look more advanced though.”
“I haven’t found any reason not to trust them.” Shadow replied. “But there’s something odd about the men that I can’t put my finger on. I think Maria is just along for the ride.”
Shadow and Argus entered the throne room and bowed.
King Acorn motioned for them to get up.
Shadow and Argus stood up.
“So I suppose the Robotniks are truly here for benevolent purposes since you invited them into the palace, Shadow.” King Acorn said sternly.
“Yes, your majesty.” Shadow replied. “They haven’t brought any weapons and they did cure my son. However, I would still keep my eye on them.”
Argus nodded in agreement. “The ship looks like a more advanced version of sir Chuck’s lab.”
“Do not show them our armory, let them have access to sir Chuck’s workshop, or let them near the Chaos Emerald mine at all.” King Acorn ordered. “You’re on notice, Shadow. If this goes wrong, it’s on your head.”
Shadow barely flinched even though he knew that meant the death penalty and it wouldn’t be pleasant.
“Yes, your majesty.” Shadow and Argus replied.
“You’re dismissed.” King Acorn said.
Shadow and Argus bowed again, then left.
Argus glanced at Shadow. “That will mean Aleena and the kids will be on the streets.”
“I know.” Shadow said.
Argus and Shadow went down separate hallways.
“We’ll head for our cabin in the forest if it comes to that.” Shadow thought. “But I doubt it will. I can fight those overgrown eggs single-handedly.”
Manic whimpered in between bouts of coughing fits.
“What did the doctor say?” Shadow asked.
Aleena bit her lip. “It doesn’t look good.” She replied. “He doesn’t know what’s wrong with Manic.”
