Shadow caught Sonic before he could race out the door.

Sonic looked at Shadow, then huffed. “Let go.”

“No, it’s bedtime.” Shadow said, picking Sonic up. He carried Sonic to his bed. “You can run tomorrow.”

Aleena tucked Manic and Sonia in their bed.

Shadow gently laid Sonic in the bed between Sonia and Manic.

Sonic quickly fell asleep.

Maria ran into the room. “Shadow? Aleena?”

“Are you okay?” Aleena asked.

Sonic opened his eyes. “Maria?”

Shadow stroked Sonic’s spines to calm him down. “Did you have a nightmare?”

Maria shook her head. “Grandpa and Ivo are trying to overthrow the kingdom.”

“Do what?” Shadow asked.

“They have robots outside.” Maria replied. “They-”

Argus rushed in. “The Robotniks are throwing a coup.” He said. “King Acorn has already fled with Sally. There’s a bounty on you now.”

Uncle Chuck rushed in.

Shadow opened the secret trapdoor. “This way. We’ll hide in the forest.”

Shadow led Maria and his family into the cabin he had built before he became a knight in case they needed to flee for some reason or another. “I’ll be back soon.” He said. “If the swatbots or the Robotniks show up, meet Argus at Mobodoon.”

“Where are you going?” Aleena asked.

“To see if I can stop them.” Shadow said.
*
“It’s been almost an hour.” Aleena said, gently bouncing Sonic in her arms. “What do we do?”

Maria peeked out the window. “Swatbots are coming.”

“We can slip out the back window.” Uncle Chuck said, picking up Sonia and Manic. He led Maria and Aleena to the bedroom and opened the window.

Maria helped Aleena and Uncle Chuck, along with the triplets, out of the window.

“Aren’t you coming?” Aleena asked.

“I can stall them.” Maria said. “They wouldn’t kill me.”

Aleena and uncle Chuck exchanged glances.

“Hurry. I’ll be fine.” Maria reassured them. She shut the window.

Uncle Chuck and Aleena took the triplets and headed to Mobodoon.

Maria hurried into the living room of the cabin.

Gerald, Ivo, and a couple of swatbots burst into the room.

“Maria?” Gerald asked. “I should’ve known. You’ve been too friendly with the space rats. Where are they?”

“They’ve been nothing but kind to us.” Maria replied. “How could you try to kill them, especially the babies? Shadow stood up for you.”

“They’re standing in the way of our goal.” Ivo said. “Either tell us where the hedgehogs and their little friends are or….”

“Or what?” Maria asked. “You wouldn’t kill me too, would you?”

Gerald and Ivo left the cabin, leaving Maria alone with the swatbots.

“Grandpa?!” Maria cried. “How could you? Grandpa!”

Shadow blasted a robot near him with his rings and skated as fast as he could out of Knothole with the air shoes that uncle Chuck made him.

There were too many Swatbots and not enough soldiers to fight back alone and he was quickly overwhelmed.

He skidded to a stop as he arrived at the cabin, which was now on fire.

Shadow ran in, hoping that he could save his family.

Smoke and flames filled the other rooms and were close to engulfing the living room.

Shadow held his breath and crawled across the floor to stay below the smoke. He noticed a body on the floor. He got to his feet, scooped up the body (who he realized was Maria), then raced out as the bedroom ceiling collapsed.

The entire roof caved in as soon as Shadow got out of the cabin.

Shadow turned around, staring at the burning cabin. He blinked back tears as he laid Maria down to check on her.

He could tell she was gone just by looking at her, but checked her pulse and to see if she was breathing anyway.

He was right; she was gone.

Shadow hung his head. “I’m sorry.” He whispered. He sat there for a moment, his eyes started to glow and reddish orange electricity arced off of his body.

Suddenly, his shoulder started stinging and he immediately felt drowsy.

He tried his best to fight the effects as he felt his shoulder to figure out what happened. He felt a dart in his shoulder, but collapsed in a heap next to Maria before he could pull it out.

“I’m surprised that it actually worked.” Gerald said. He stood over Shadow.

“Maybe we just got lucky.” Ivo said, pulling off Shadow’s gauntlets and boots.

Shadow cracked his eyes open. “You’ll… pay for… this.”

“In your dreams, hedgehog.” Gerald said.

Shadow slowly woke up, rubbing his head.

Red liquid started coming through the floor of the strange translucent chamber he found himself in.

Shadow scrambled his feet. He saw the Robotniks, standing on the other side of the chamber and giving him sinister grins.

“Oh, don’t worry, you won’t drown.” Ivo Robotnik said. “You’re being placed in suspended animation.”

Shadow glared at them and punched the clear plastic in vain.

“Sayonara, Shadow the hedgehog.” Ivo Robotnik said.

The stasis fluid finally filled the chamber.

Shadow closed his eyes.

Aleena finally got the triplets to sleep and tucked the toddlers into their makeshift bed in the bunker at Mobodoon. She kissed them on their foreheads.

Argus came into Aleena’s room in the bunker. “Bad news, Aleena.”

“I know Maria is dead.” Aleena said sadly.

“Yes and Robotnik caught Shadow.” Argus replied. “He’s been placed in stasis and we don’t know where he’s being held. They caught him off guard. Cat and I believe he made it to the cabin and tried to save Maria and you all. We found her outside and Shadow’s shoe prints beside her.”

Aleena buried her face in her hands, sobbing softly to keep the kids from waking up.

“I’m still trying to find him.” Argus said. “He’s the scapegoat for this, it seems. No one wants to find him but us.”

Manic woke up. “Ma?”

Aleena looked at the babies.

Sonic and Sonia woke up as well. The triplets gave her concerned looks.

Sonia looked around. “Where’s Daddy?”

“Where’s Maria?” Manic asked.

“Yeah, where are they, Mom?” Sonic asked.

Aleena sighed. “I don’t know how to tell you this….”

The ground shook as a loud explosion echoed through the air.

Aleena gasped. “What was that?”

The triplets started crying, though Sonic was trying to comfort his younger siblings while their mom was distracted.

“The Robotniks have developed some powerful weapons with the Chaos Emeralds.” Argus said.

Sonic nudged Aleena. “Mom? Where’s Dad and Maria?” He asked. “Was that thunder?”

Aleena sighed.

Uncle Chuck walked in with a little echidna boy. “King Acorn gave him shelter, but he’s an orphan.” He said. “Can Knuckles stay here until we find him a home?”

“Of course.” Aleena replied.

Uncle Chuck nudged Knuckles over to Aleena. “Go on, she’ll take care of you.”

Knuckles ran over to Aleena.

Aleena hugged Knuckles. “Can you watch my babies for one minute, Knux?”

Knuckles nodded. “Yes, Ma’am.”

Aleena let go of Knuckles and headed over to Uncle Chuck and Argus. “What exactly happened?”

“He just wiped out over half of our cities.” Uncle Chuck said. “We lost count of the casualties. Shadow could’ve been one of them if his stasis chamber was near a blast zone.”

Aleena wiped tears out of her eyes.

“We’ll find him, Aleena.” Argus said. “I promise.”
