Manic tossed his and Surge’s bags into the van. “Alright; let’s go.” He said. He climbed into the van.
Shadow started the van and backed out of the driveway.
“So what’s to do in Lake valley this time of the year?” Surge asked.
“There’s tennis.” Sonic replied.
“I mean, that we can’t do at home.” Surge said.
“Hiking and tubing.” Manic replied.
Sonia tapped her fingers on the door panel. “So should we talk or…?”
“No, just play music.” Sonic said.
“Yeah.” Manic replied. He pulled out his phone.
Sonic smirked. “You pick Sonia.”
Sonia connected her phone to the van’s radio and started a song.
Shadow glanced at the radio. “Warrior again?” He asked. “That must be your new favorite song.”
Manic grinned. “Awesome! You like Ledger too, sis?”
Sonia smiled. “Finally, something we can agree on.”
Sonic sighed. “Great.”
Sally leaned closer to Sonic. “You kinda asked for this.”
Surge punched Sonic in the arm. “Thanks, I was hoping he’d move past that pop song phase.”
Sonic rubbed his arm and glared at Surge.

Shadow parked the van beside the cabin.
Surge groaned. “So just hiking or swimming?”
“What?” Manic asked.
“The tubing center’s website says that hedgehogs, porcupines, and Lesser and Greater hedgehog tenrecs are not allowed.” Surge said, scrolling through her phone. “Oh, and echidnas too.”
“Oh, that kinda makes sense.” Sally replied.
Sonic looked at Sally. “Excuse me?”
“Your spines would pop the inner tubes.” Sally replied. “I’m sure they don’t want to replace them all the time.”
Manic got his phone out as they all got out of the car. “Hey, white water rafting or kayaking.”
“Sonia won’t paddle.” Sonic and Shadow replied.
Surge rolled her eyes. “You weren’t kidding when you called her a spiny annoying princess.”
“You’re still calling me that?” Sonia asked.
“We don’t have to do every single activity together.” Manic said.
“Okay, but we should at least have one group activity or meal.” Sally replied.
Everyone agreed.
They headed inside.
“Okay, Shadow, Manic, and I will take one room.” Sonic said, setting his backpack down. “Sonia, Sally, and… Surge will take the other.”
“There’s three rooms.” Manic said, setting his backpack down.
“I know.” Sonic replied.
Manic crossed his arms. “You just don’t want her to share a room with me.”
Surge laughed. “The fact that you are so against our relationship makes this so much sweeter.”
Sonic shook his head.
Surge smirked. “I almost want to have kids one day just to spite you.”
“Manic wouldn’t go for spite kids.” Sonic said, rolling his eyes.
Manic grinned and put his arm around her. “I’ll take it.” He replied. “Sorry, bro, you’ll have to get over it.”
Sonic sighed.

Shadow set the food bags down. “There’s a Mexican restaurant called Maria’s here too.”
“What’s your obsession with places named Maria?” Surge asked.
Everyone except Manic stepped aside.
“Uh… Shadow. She doesn’t know.” Manic said. “Don’t- don’t freak out.”
“What are you talking about?” Surge asked.
“Maria is his adoptive sister.” Manic replied. “She died years ago.”
“I’m sorry, but… it’s been years.” Surge replied. “Shouldn’t you go to counseling if you’re still struggling?”
Shadow started taking off his inhibitor rings. “Step outside.”
“Shadow, she didn’t mean it like that.” Manic said, slowly stepping in front of Surge. “She was just… uh… trying to help…?”
Manic looked at Surge. “Right, Babe?” He asked. “Right?”
“Right.” Surge replied.
“Nah, I don’t buy it.” Sonic said.
Manic glared at Sonic. “Shut up, Sonic, or I swear I’ll show that video of your impersonation-”
“I was kidding, Shadow.” Sonic said. “Just kidding. Uh… the food’s getting cold.”
Shadow put the inhibitor rings on. “Do that again and it’ll be the last thing you do.”
Surge half smiled. “Fair enough.
