Twelve year old Sonic and Manic shuffled down the sidewalk alone.
Manic kicked a soda can. “So what’s Sonia gonna do if Bunnie asks to sleepover at our house?”
“Lie and say we have a gas leak or something if she hadn’t already told Bunnie she couldn’t go to it.” Sonic said. “Sonia was afraid of that, so she canceled. Someone’s gonna catch on one day, I know it.”
Sonic and Manic made it home and let themselves in. They walked through their living room.
Aleena was passed out on the couch again.
Sonic scoffed. “Of course, we don’t get a normal mom.”
Manic hurried to the fridge. “Please let there be food.” He said. He opened the fridge door and groaned. “Nothing. Let’s go to Shadow’s house.”
“I’m not going to his place.” Sonic replied.
Manic rolled his eyes. “Relax, bro.” He said. “He hasn’t asked us about our home life since Maria died.”
The door opened.
“Please be Sonia.” Manic whispered.
“We told you not to see that boy.” Brenden yelled.
“Oh, no.” Sonic and Manic muttered.
“He asked me a question.” Sonia said. “You’re hurting my arm.”
Sonic and Manic raised their spines.
“He needs to mind his own business.” Brenden yelled.
Aleena finally got up and staggered over to the foyer. “What are you yelling at her for?”
“Should we go to our room?” Manic whispered.
Sonic and Manic flinched as someone was pushed into furniture.
“Ow!” Sonia cried.
“Don’t push her for that.” Aleena screamed.
Sonic and Manic looked at each other, then ran into the foyer.
Sonia was slowly getting to her feet. Her face had several scratches on it.
The little side table by the couch was broken and had some specks of blood on it.
“What is wrong with you?!” Sonic yelled.
“Go to your room, Sonic.” Aleena said, pointing in the direction of their rooms.
Sonic crossed his arms. “No.”
Manic looked at Sonic, then crossed his arms as well.
The brothers glared at their dad.
Sonia ran off to her room, pulling her backpack off of her shoulders.
Brendan nudged Aleena aside. “What did you say, Sonic?”
“You heard me.” Sonic said, narrowing his eyes.
Brendan punched Sonic.
Sonic staggered back.
Manic took a swing at his dad.
Brendan caught Manic’s wrist and forcefully lowered his arm.
Manic cried out in pain.
Someone started pounding on the door.
“Police, open up.” A male voice called.
Sonic and Manic hurried to the hallway.
Sonia stepped out of her room. “In here.” She whispered. “I called the cops.”
Sonic and Manic hurried into her room.
“Sonic, your nose is bleeding.” Sonia said.
Manic handed Sonic a tissue.
“You think uncle Chuck will take us in?” Sonia asked.
“Maybe, anything is better than this.” Manic said.

“Police; can you open the door?” A male voice asked.
Sonic opened the door.
The triplets held their hands up.
The police officer, a Mobian cat, was standing in the hallway. “What happened to your faces?”
“Dad punched me and shoved Sonia into the coffee table.” Sonic said.
“I probably got blood on me while helping them.” Manic replied. “He nearly broke my arm.”
“Okay, do you three have anywhere you can stay?” The officer asked.
“We have an uncle and aunt.” Manic replied. “Maybe they’ll take us in or our friend Shadow’s adoptive Dad will take us in.”
“Do you know your aunt and uncle’s names?” The officer asked.
“Uh… uncle Chuck and aunt Rachel.” Manic replied.
“If your parents don’t have their numbers, we’ll have dispatch look them up, okay?” The officer asked.
The triplets nodded.
“Okay, you can come out.” The officer said. “It’s safe now.”
