Danny

Danny had definitely caught Sam’s cold, so he was extra tired when he entered the Ghost Zone that night. He really didn’t want to deal with Desiree and the other ghosts inside the Fenton Thermos. He kept sneezing as he made his way to his normal drop-off point.

His sneezing attracted little blobby ghosts of various colors. They had cartoon-like faces that shone with glee. Danny stopped flying to let them gather around him. They snuggled up to him, and each color had a different temperature. He giggled at their affectionate nature.

“Alright, alright,” he said after a while. “I–achoo!–have work to do.”

A purple blob came up to his face, made an arm-like appendage, and wiped his nose.

“Yeah, I’m sick,” Danny said and sniffed. “You should stay away so you don’t catch it. Actually, can ghosts get sick? Maybe this is… is… Achoo!–a human thing.”

The purple blob twisted its whole body in a display of confusion.

“I’m a halfa,” Danny explained. “Half a ghost, half a human. Wanna see?”

Was he avoiding his task? Yes. Was he enjoying himself? Also yes.

The blob ghosts twittered at his question, which he could tell meant “yes.”

“Okay!” Danny said.

When he transformed, the ghosts moved around the rings and back like a wave. Danny laughed, triggering a fit of sneezes. The blob ghosts floated back so they didn’t get hit by him. They reformed as soon as he was done. Where they touched his skin, he felt tingling and an almost wet sensation.

“Wow,” he said, admiring the innocent creatures. “You know what? I like you guys. But, unfortunately, I have a job to do. See you later.”

He transformed, started flying, and the blob ghosts trailed after him. He stopped and sniffed.

“Look, you’re great and all, but I gotta go,” Danny said.

The cartoonish faces all looked up at him and frowned.

“Okay, okay, you can come with me.”

The blob ghosts twittered excitedly.

“But you have to be quiet,” Danny said.

They all made the lock and key motion over their mouths. Well, that was interesting. At least they would be quiet.

Danny continued, occasionally glancing at individual blob ghosts. They each had little quirks to them, like one had a twist at the top of its head like hair, and another had a curly tail. They smiled back at him whenever he looked.

Eventually, they made it to Danny’s release point. He hid behind a small rock and aimed the Thermos away from him.

The ghosts spewed out in the opposite order they went in: Tucker’s ghost came out first, then Desiree, followed by Sayonara Pussycat, and finally, Dash’s ghost. They all took a moment to gather their bearings, and the cat ghost zoomed off in a random direction. The other three scowled.

“Where is he?” Desiree said. She looked right at Danny, and he ducked. “There!”

Uh oh. So much for his hiding place. He could kick himself. Ghosts could feel the presence of other ghosts! How could he forget that? It was how Tucker could follow him even when he was invisible.

“Come out, Danny!” Tucker’s ghost said.

“Or are you too scared, punk?” Dash’s ghost teased.

Danny gritted his teeth, clutching the Fenton Thermos, and flew out from behind the rock.

“Leave, now,” he commanded, holding in a sneeze, “or I’ll put you back in the Thermos!”

Desiree laughed. “That will not work, young ghost. You see, eventually, you will have to let us out.”

“What do you want?” Danny asked, a sick feeling in his gut.

“To end you!” Tucker’s ghost said, pounding his fist into his hand.

Danny winced.

“Yes, exactly,” Desiree purred. “Ready, boys?”

Dash and Tucker’s ghosts rushed Danny and grabbed his arms. The blob ghosts twittered in confusion. Danny struggled, but the hulking ghosts were too strong.

“Let me go!” Danny shouted and sneezed.

“Not yet, twerp,” Dash’s ghost sneered.

Before Danny could figure out what that meant, Desiree made a cage with her enlarged hands with one side open. Dash and Tucker’s ghosts threw him into the cage, and the open side sealed shut. Danny smashed his fist against the bars, but they were solid. The cage started shrinking.

“Can’t go intangible!” Danny realized. “Not again! Can’t turn human, either! Argh!”

The cage morphed and constricted around him. The ghosts laughed at him. He tried gathering ectoenergy in his hands, but it didn’t work. He yelled in panic.

The blob ghosts caught on to his distress and attacked Desiree. They rammed her with their small bodies, and some produced zaps of electricity. Ice crystals flung at her, tiny fireballs burned her, and spiky vines whacked her.

“Ow! Ouch! Stop–ow!” Desiree said. She shifted her hands so that only one held Danny and swatted at the blob ghosts with her now-free hand. “Get these–ow–things off me!”

Dash and Tucker’s ghosts looked at her and burst out laughing. Tucker’s ghost even slapped his knee.

“Useless!” Desiree snapped.

Danny struggled more and felt her grip loosen. She let go to combat the blob ghosts. He summoned ectoenergy to his hands and smiled.

“Thanks, little guys,” Danny said and sniffed. “I’ll take it from here.” He shot ectoblasts at Dash and Tucker’s ghosts, who yelped and stopped laughing.

“Those were warning shots,” Danny said. “Get out of here while you can.”

The ghosts growled and charged at him, but he sent bigger blasts at them. This time, they whimpered and flew away.

“Phew,” Danny said, wiping his forehead. “Two down, one to go.”

The blob ghosts scattered from Desiree and reformed around Danny. He glared at Desiree and said, “Leave now. I never want to see you again.”

Desiree gaped at him. She looked ridiculous with all the new scars, burns, and torn clothes.

“I’m waiting,” Danny threatened with ectoenergy collecting in his hand. Don’t sneeze now. Don’t sneeze now!

“You wouldn’t dare…” Desiree said, though she looked scared.

Danny lunged a huge ball of ectoenergy at her and let out a big sneeze. She screamed and flew away, dodging by mere inches. She disappeared into the distance.

Danny sighed, and his muscles relaxed. “Good thing she got so scared,” he said to the blob ghosts. “I don’t know if I would have won.”

The blob ghosts gave off the impression of denial, that he was better than he claimed.

“Thanks, little guys,” he said, smiling. “You were a big help. I was totally trapped back there. I don’t know why she was scared, though. I’m not that scary. Am I?”

The blob ghosts all nodded, which meant their whole bodies bent at the middle.

“What do you mean, I’m scary?” Danny asked.

The blob ghosts gathered close to one another, seemingly forming as one. They morphed into a shadowy version of Danny with dark wisps radiating from his back. His face had a demonic look to it, with ice flakes forming around his eyes.

That’s what I look like?” Danny asked, horrified.

The shadow Danny shook his head and changed again. This time, he looked normal, like how Danny saw himself in the mirror.

“So… only sometimes, then,” Danny said and sniffed. He sneezed and rubbed his nose as the blob ghosts returned to their normal forms. They all looked at him nervously. “I’m not mad at you, don’t worry. Just… it’s a lot to take in.”

He started flying home in silence, and the blob ghosts kept up with him.

After a while, he said, “You know, you can’t come home with me.”

Sadness.

“But I’m happy to travel to the portal with you.”

Happiness.

“You just can’t come through.”

Sadness.

“I’m sorry. It’s not safe for you.”

Confusion.

“My parents are ghost hunters and researchers. They would love to run experiments on you, and that wouldn’t be fun.”

Sadness and confusion.

“Why do I live with them?” the blob ghosts wanted to know. Danny felt his core constrict. “Well, they’re my parents, and I love them. They love me, too. They just don’t know everything.”

Questioning.

“Well, I can’t really tell ghost hunters that I’m a ghost.” He chuckled sadly.

He felt something different from the blob ghosts. Was it… pity?

“Don’t worry about me,” he said, attempting at casualness. “I have everything under control. My parents are good people. They just have the wrong idea about ghosts. Hey! I’m not in denial!”

The blob ghosts rolled their eyes. It was a weird sight.

“Believe what you want,” Danny said tiredly. “We’re here. Time to say goodbye.”

The blob ghosts snuggled up to him for a moment and then scattered. Danny waved at them before going through the portal.

He was so ready for some sleep.

The Next Day - Danny

Danny slept in a lot. His mom came in to check on him before school, saw how sick he was, and excused him for the next three days. At least she, Dad, and Sam were better. Danny and Tucker, on the other hand…

Sam came over after school with some soup. She sat on Danny’s bed and said, “Do you and Tucker have to share everything?”

“What are we sharing?” Danny asked.

“You’re both sick,” Sam answered with a chuckle. “I’m going to see him next. Eat your soup.”

“Thanks, Sam,” Danny said. He relished the steam coming off the soup. “I can’t breathe through my nose.”

“I know,” Sam said. “I was the same way. You’ll get over it. Hopefully in time for Halloween.”

“Oh yeah, that’s coming up, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, on Sunday.” Sam had a twinkle in her eyes. She always loved Halloween. “Now that you’re a ghost, we should do something special.”

“Like what?”

Sam shrugged. “What do ghosts do on Halloween?”

“Dunno,” Danny said.

“You should ask,” Sam said.

“When?” Danny asked with a sniff. “I’m sick as a dog.”

“When you’re better, obviously,” Sam said dismissively.

“And when will that be?” Danny asked miserably. “I feel horrible.”

“It’ll be over before you know it,” Sam said, standing. “Rest up. I’ll be back tomorrow.”

“Thanks, Sam.”
