Sonia and Mindy (in their Miyu and Minami forms) arrived at the downtown square.
They used their medallions to counteract the signal by playing an upbeat pop tune.
The figure dissipated into a pixelated cloud as soon as they got within four feet of the figure.
“It’s definitely a hologram.” Sonia said, pressing a button on her medallion. Her Miyu form quickly faded away and the music stopped.
Mindy pressed a button on her medallion. Her Minami form quickly disappeared and the music stopped too. She stepped over to one of the buildings. “Hey, check this out.”
Sonia stepped over to the little shop.
Graffiti covered the buildings and broken windows. The most notable piece of the graffiti was the name Darkerina.
“Fitting name.” Sonia said.
Mindy stepped over to another section of graffiti. “It looks like a cryptic message.”
“It’s telling us and Miyuki to go to the Hanging Garden penthouse floor five.” Sonia said.
Mindy looked at Sonia. “How did you figure it out so quickly?”
“Because it looks exactly like the coded messages that Sonic and Manic would write when they were kids and pretending to be secret agents.” Sonia replied.
Mindy looked at the map again. “That’s Manic’s handwriting, isn’t it?” She asked. “He writes his lowercase g’s like eights.”
“It’s not that uncommon.” Sonia replied. She started walking away.
Mindy gave the map another look, then caught up to Sonia. “Sonia, what if he has a hand in it?”
Sonia stopped, then turned to face Mindy. “Manic may be a kleptomaniac and self-medicates with alcohol occasionally, but he wouldn’t do any of this.” She replied. “He doesn’t have the attention span or patience to concoct a scheme like this anyway. He couldn’t do his own laundry without getting distracted.”
Mindy sighed. “You need to quit making excuses for his behavior,” She said. “I know it’s been a hard three years and I’ve kept quiet about it when you and Aleena bailed him out of his legal troubles, but you’re not helping him in the long run. He’s not okay.”
Sonia seethed and turned away. “Stop.” She replied. “Now’s not the time to discuss this.”
“Okay, then.” Mindy said. She looked over at Tails, who had just arrived. “Tails?”
Sonia turned around as Tails flew over. “What did you find?”
“The frequency can only be temporarily counteracted unless someone puts on headphones as soon as they’re free.” Tails said, landing in front of Sonia and Mindy. “The signal has to be shut off, then everyone will go back to normal. Also, I did find that there is a subliminal message hidden in the music.”
“If it’s telling us to meet Darkerina in the Hanging Garden penthouse, we know.” Sonia said. “She left a map.”
Tails shook his head. “It’s commands to do her bidding.” He replied. “Like your typical hypnosis stuff, but… it’s pretty dark.”
“Dark?” Mindy asked.
“Like… it’s pretty disturbing.” Tails replied. “Suffice to say, she doesn’t particularly like people or GUN. She really wants you, Miyu, and Miyuki dead. Oh, and Shadow too.”
Mindy and Sonia exchanged glances.
“It made my skin crawl listening to it.” Tails said. “She’s pretty evil. I’ll let you look at the transcript if you want, but I don’t think you want to see it and I really want to delete it off my computer.”
“Is it along the lines of that Terminator book that Manic couldn’t finish or that time Sonic wanted to watch that scary movie at your lab and all the weird junk happened?” Sonia asked.
“The latter.” Tails replied.
Sonia shuddered. “We’ll take your word for it.”
Tails pulled out two extra medallions. “I brought these because I’m sure you need more power.” He said, handing the medallions to Mindy and Sonia.
“Thanks, Tails.” Mindy and Sonia said.
“I gave one to Miyuki already.” Tails replied.
“You ever gonna tell us who Miyuki is?” Sonia asked.
“Sorry, I’m sworn to secrecy.” Tails replied. “She doesn’t know who you two are either.”
Sonia put on the medallion. “At least we can trust you to keep a secret.”
Tails smiled weakly. “Sonic used to say that to me too.”
Sonia hugged Tails. “I miss him too, little bro.” She said softly. “He’d be proud of you.”
“He’d be proud of you too.” Tails replied. He let Sonia go. “Good luck, you two. The other medallions can recharge while you use the new ones. It’s always good to have backups.”
“You think of everything, Tails.” Sonia said.
Tails shrugged. “I try to.” He replied. “I’ll be back at my lab, tracking the signal, if you need me.”
“Stay safe, little bro.” Sonia said.
Tails flew away.
Sonia and Mindy looked at each other and got their medallions ready, then nodded. They said the name of their super forms simultaneously as they pressed the button on their medallions.
Immediately, their super forms took effect in a pink and aqua light show.
Mindy giggled. “I’m so glad Tails added the anime transformation light show to the medallions.”
Sonia smiled. “Me too.”
Sonia and Mindy flew away.
