Four year old Surge was walked to the steps of some building in the middle of the night by her parents. She had no clue what this was about, but said nothing. She was afraid of the consequences and was still a little groggy.
Surge’s dad had the little girl sit down on the steps. “Stay put.”
Surge nodded.
Surge’s parents walked away.
Surge watched them get in the car and start it. Her eyes widened as the lights came on and the car sped away.
Surge ran after the car. “Wait!” She cried. “Mom! Dad!”
The car didn’t stop.
Surge stood in the middle of the street, unable to keep up with her parents’ car. She sniffled and wiped her eyes.
Lights flashed behind Surge.
Surge flinched and turned around to see a large hovercraft. “Aliens are real?!”
The hovercraft stopped.
Surge froze as someone got out of the hovercraft. She could tell it was a large human male, but not much else.
“Get out of the way, you crazy brat.” The man bellowed. “What in blazes are you doing in the middle of the street at this hour?”
“Mom and Dad left me.” Surge cried. “Can you help me? Please?”
The man approached her and knelt down. “They abandoned you?” He asked. “That’s not right and of course I can help you.”
Surge tilted her head to the side, finally realizing it might not be a good idea to talk to a stranger. “Uhm….”
“Did you have better options?” The man asked.
“No, I guess not.” Surge replied. “I’m Surge.”
The man stood up and led Surge to the hovercraft. “I’m Dr. Eggman.”
Surge laughed. “No way, that can’t be your name.”
“It’s not my real name, it’s a code name.” Dr. Eggman said, letting Surge into the hovercraft.
Surge sat down on the passenger side. “Are you a spy?”
Dr. Eggman climbed into his hovercraft. “Yes, and I’m recruiting you into the agency.”
“Cool.” Surge replied.
Dr. Eggman put the hovercraft in drive and flew away.
Surge settled into her seat. “Life’s better already.” She thought.

Surge sat on the couch, eating a bowl of strawberry sorbet.
Dr. Eggman sat down in the armchair across from Surge. “Okay, you will live here, but it has to be a secret.”
Surge nodded.
“Your cover is to be a normal kid in the Mobotropolis suburb.” Dr. Eggman said. “You will have Robo parents, but you can’t tell anyone they’re robots.”
“So why are we doing this?” Surge asked.
Dr. Eggman showed Surge a photo of a family of hedgehogs, three hoglets and their mom. “To get close to these kids.” He said. “One or all of them were born with super powers. When the time is right, I’m going to recruit one of them. There’s two boys I’d also like to recruit, but they’re friends with the triplets, so you’ll have to interact with them anyway.”
Surge set her empty bowl down. “I can do that.”
“Their mom is pretty protective over them.” Dr. Eggman said. “That’s why I’m sending you, my new agent, to spy on them.”
“Okay.” Surge agreed. “So I can’t talk about you at all?”
“No, not at all.” Dr. Eggman replied. “There’s bad guys that will hurt me if you tell anyone.”
“I promise I won’t tell anyone.” Surge said.
Dr. Eggman patted Surge on the head. “Good girl.”

The next day, Surge approached a group of kids as they played in the hedgehog family’s front yard.
The green hedgehog boy ran over to Surge. “Hi, I’m Manic.” He said, smiling. “I love your wristbands and hair band. What’s your name?”
Surge grinned. “Thanks.” She replied. “I’m Surge. I love your wristbands too.”
Manic took Surge’s hand and dragged her along to meet his siblings and friends. “Everyone, this is Surge.”
Shadow and Knuckles eyed Surge suspiciously as Sonic, Sonia, and Sally introduced themselves to Surge.
“And this is Shadow and Knuckles.” Manic said.
Surge looked at Shadow’s shirt. “Terminator?”
She asked. “Where’d you get that?”
“Maria made it for me.” Shadow replied.
“He’s only seen the tv version.” Knuckles said.
Shadow punched Knuckles on the arm. “So have you.”
“Alright, let’s get back to our race.” Sonic said. “Manic, get Surge our extra skateboard.”
“You get it, Sonic.” Sonia replied. “You’re faster.”
Sonic raced off to the garage.
Surge’s jaw dropped.
Shadow scoffed. “I’m faster.”
“How did you- nevermind.” Surge said.
Manic looked at Surge incredulously. “Nevermind?” He asked. “How did you know he’s that fast?”
“I didn’t.” Surge replied. “I was told not to be nosy and I didn’t think before I asked.”
“Oh, okay.” Manic said. He shrugged. “We don’t know why he or Shadow is so fast. Ma said she’d explain to us when we’re older. Like it’s too complicated for us to understand right now.”
Surge nodded. “Oh, okay.”
Sonic came back out with a black and neon green skateboard. “Got it.” He said. He handed the skateboard to Surge. “Sorry, it was buried under a lot of stuff. You can have it, Surge. Manic doesn’t want it anymore.”
“Thanks.” Surge replied.
