Kit was probably picked up around the same time as Surge, but on separate occasions

After a day of playing, Surge came home to the lab and saw a little boy fennec fox sitting in front of the main computer. “Hey, what’s your name?”
The fox looked up. “Kit.” He said, his ears perking up. “I’m the new lab tech. You must be Surge.”
“Yeah.” Surge replied. She sat down beside Kit. “So when did you get here?”
“Two weeks ago, I think.” Kit said. “I kinda lost track of time.”
“So why didn’t you go with me to play?” Surge asked.
Kit shrugged. “Dr. Eggman said I wasn’t allowed to go on field missions.”
Surge huffed. “That’s pretty lame.”
“I like playing with his robots anyway.” Kit replied.
“But you didn’t go skateboarding with Manic, his siblings, and friends.” Surge said.
Kit sighed. “Well… he does allow me to ride the rollercoaster or play in the pinball room though.” He replied. He closed the computer, then turned to face Surge and smiled. “Wanna play in the pinball room? You get to slide around this room with air jets like you’re the pinball.”
Surge smirked. “Awesome.”
Surge and Kit got up and headed out of the room.
Dr. Eggman met the two in the hallway. “Oh, Surge, if you happen to slip up and mention Kit to your targets, he’s your brother who’s at a boarding school for geniuses.”
“Sure.” Surge said.
Kit lowered his ears. “Uh,… sir? Can I play with Surge and the targets next time?”
Dr. Eggman glared at the little fox.
Kit eased behind Surge and cowered. “S- sorry. I’m so sorry.”
“That’s better.” Dr. Eggman said. “Go on.”
Surge and Kit walked away.
Kit clung to Surge.
Surge nudged Kit away. “What’s with you?”
“Eggman makes his robots beat me if I do something wrong.” Kit said.
Surge chuckled nervously. “What? I’ve never seen him do anything like that.”
“Maybe you haven’t done anything that makes him angry yet.” Kit replied. “He says I need to be more like you.”
Surge shrugged. “I guess you’re right.”
She somewhat doubted the story, but she couldn’t imagine anyone acting this terrified for no reason.
She could admit that the angry stare Dr. Eggman gave Kit was rather terrifying.

The next day, Surge met Manic at the playhouse Uncle Chuck built for the children.
Manic was sitting outside on the little porch. He looked up as Surge sat down beside him. “Eh, we should go.” He said, getting up. “Sonia’s wanting to play house and we’ll be forced to go to her dinner party. She’s got this ugly doll picked out for us so it’ll be our baby.”
Surge grimaced.
Manic took Surge’s hand and ran inside the house with her. “We can play with my new velociraptor robot.”
Manic and Surge sat down on the floor.
Manic pressed a button on the robot.
The robot shrieked and hopped around the floor.
Surge laughed. “Awesome.” She said, “Kit would love that.”
“Who?” Manic asked.
“Kit; he’s my adoptive brother.” Surge replied. “He goes to a boarding school for geniuses, so I don’t get to see him much.”
“Cool, but I guess you miss him.” Manic said. “I’d miss my bro if I didn’t get to see him much.”
Surge nodded. “But it’s a really cool school though.” She replied. “They have a roller coaster and this cool pinball room where you can roll around like a ball.”
“Sweet.” Manic said, grinning. “Any chance we can visit?”
Surge shrugged. “Maybe, I’ll have to ask.” She replied. “I don’t get to see him much either.”

Surge and Kit walked into the lab to ask Dr. Eggman about dinner.
“I heard you telling Kit you invited that green rat to visit the amusement park wing.” Dr. Eggman said, spinning the chair to face Surge.
“Yeah, was that a problem?” Surge asked. “It’s not like it was directly connected to the lab.”
“It’s still top secret, you idiotic rat!” Dr. Eggman yelled.
Kit flinched and hid behind Surge.
Surge cowered. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” She replied.
“This has to be what Kit was talking about.” Surge thought.
Dr. Eggman pressed a button on his gauntlet.
Surge shrieked as electricity surged through her body, starting from her fingers.
Kit was frozen in place. “Surge!” He cried. “Stop hurting her, sir!”
“You’re gonna tell him you were mistaken or I’m letting my robots use you as a new punching bag.” Dr. Eggman said. He stopped shocking Surge. “Do I make myself clear?”
Surge exhaled loudly. “Yes… yes, sir.”
Dr. Eggman nodded. “Good; glad we have an understanding.” He replied. “Now clean up my bathroom. The robots will bring you two your dinner shortly.”
Surge limped away, fighting back tears. She didn’t want to get in trouble for whining.
Kit followed Surge.
“And let that be a lesson to you, Kit.” Dr. Eggman said.
“Y- yes, sir.” Kit replied.
