Uncle Chuck showed up at the alley where he was to meet Farrell to pick up some new weaponry for the resistance.

Sonic was with his friends Tails and Sally in Sanctuary, so Uncle Chuck didn’t have to worry about the rambunctious ten year old getting into mischief.

Farrell and a ten year old hedgehog boy finally showed up.

The boy’s long green spines hung in his brown eyes. He duly stared at uncle Chuck and crossed his arms, carefully avoiding poking himself with the black spikes on his black leather wristbands.

“I’m sure that’s Manic.” Uncle Chuck thought. “He looks just like Brenden.”

“Sorry to spring this on ya, Chuck.” Farrell said. “We have to raise our prices about ten percent. The kid here had a hard time smuggling those out of Robotnik’s armory.”

“Sorry about that, kid.” Uncle Chuck said. “What’s your name again?”

“That’s not any of your business.” Manic said flatly.

Farrell barely glanced at the boy. “It’s Manic; he’s having a rough day.”

“Knew it.” Uncle Chuck thought. He gave Farrell the money.

Farrell counted the money. “Thanks.” He said. He handed the bag to Uncle Chuck. “Pleasure doing business with you.”

Manic gave a terse nod.

Uncle Chuck gave Manic an extra five dollars. “Here you go, kid.” He said. “You’ve earned it.”

Manic grinned and took the money. “Thanks, dude.”

Uncle Chuck laughed. “You’re welcome.”

Uncle Chuck settled into his worn out couch after putting Sonic to bed. He called Aleena to tell her the good news.

Aleena answered the phone. “What’s up?”

“Found him.” Uncle Chuck said. “Manic really is working with Farrell.”

“Hmm, I’m glad he’s alive, but I’m concerned about him.” Aleena replied. “What’s he like now?”

“He’s pretty suspicious of anyone asking him questions.” Uncle Chuck said. “I don’t know if I should tell him who I am. He’s… I don’t know if it’s an act, but he doesn’t seem as outgoing as anyone in our family. Just said a few words with this deadpan stare. I got him to smile briefly when I gave him an extra five dollars.”

“That doesn’t make me feel better.” Aleena replied. “Even if Farrell is looking out for Manic and providing him with his basic needs, he’s probably not getting his emotional needs met. It sounds like he’s already cold and uncaring.”

“Do you want me to tell him who I am if I see him again?” Uncle Chuck asked.

“If he had gotten to see the note, he'd be looking for Sonic, Sonia, or me.” Aleena replied. “Unfortunately, I didn’t mention you in the note and you weren’t in the picture I stuck in the note. If Farrell has taken him in and is caring for him, he’s not going to let someone get near him unless it’s me, Sonic, or Sonia. Even then, he might not let us get near him.”

“I’ll keep an eye on him anyway.” Uncle Chuck said.

“Please do.” Aleena replied. “If you hadn’t mentioned Manic or Sonia to Sonic yet, go ahead. I think he’s old enough.”

“I haven’t mentioned his siblings yet because of Manic being missing.” Uncle Chuck said. “He doesn’t seem to remember them or at least he hasn’t asked about them.”

“He was too little to remember.” Aleena replied. “It’s a shame; Sonic and Manic were so close when they were babies. “Oh, I have to go. I’ll try to call you in two weeks. Stay safe.”

“Stay safe, Aleena.” Uncle Chuck said.

That night, Manic snuggled beside Farrell on the couch. “Can we watch Animaniacs or Duck Dodgers, please?”

Farrell turned on their TV. “Both; you earned it today, my boy.”

Manic grinned. “Awesome.”

Farrell handed Manic a bowl of popcorn. He started Manic’s favorite episode of Animaniacs.

Manic sighed. “Can I at least try to find Sonic?” He asked. “I always wanted a brother.”

“I don’t even know where he’s at or what he looks like.” Farrell replied. “The picture that was supposed to be in the letter was missing. He probably keeps his medallion hidden like you do. That’s not something we can ask anyone about.”

Manic nodded. “I know.”

“Hey, your family will find you when they can.” Farrell said. “They might be serving in the resistance somehow.”

Manic took a bite of popcorn.

Farrell ruffled Manic’s spines. “You’re still my boy no matter what.”

“You’re still my dad no matter what.” Manic said. “Even if you don’t allow me to call you that publicly.”

“You do a fine job keeping up your tough guy act.” Farrell said. “Almost have me believing it.”

Manic bit his lip. “So do I sometimes.”

Farrell nodded.

Manic barely laughed at the episode.

Farrell paused the video. “Do you need to talk?”

“Is it even an act now or is that really me?” Manic asked.

“Probably a little of both.” Farrell replied. “You’re a tough kid, but here you are snuggled on the couch and watching cartoons like a normal kid.”

“I guess you’re right.” Manic muttered.

“Hey, you don’t enjoy violence and don’t sit idly by when someone innocent is hurt.” Farrell replied. “You cried for hours when Maria got sicker and you thought she was gonna die. That shows you still have a heart. You’re just an astounding actor.”

“Thanks, Farrell.” Manic said, smiling weakly.

Farrell patted Manic on the back. “You’re a better Mobian than I am.” He replied. He held up the remote. “Need me to rewind the show?”

“Yeah.” Manic said. He took a bite of popcorn.

“Glad that helped.” Farrell replied.
