I hadn’t forgotten Sonia, her life is pretty much perfect and it wouldn’t be all that interesting to write about

Manic held hands with his girlfriend Surge as he walked down the street with her and their friends Kit and Shadow.

They had just left the ice cream shop that was secretly supporting the resistance.

“Wait.” Kit said, ears twitching.

Surge, Manic, and Shadow stopped.

“You hear that?” Kit asked.

Surge rolled her eyes. “It’s nothing.”

Manic glanced at Kit. “It’s probably Robotnik’s security system.” He said. “They always-”

Swatbots immediately surrounded them.

Manic struggled to get away as a Swatbot grabbed him. “Ugh, since when are they so quiet?”

Another grabbed Surge.

Surge moved her hands. “I left my rings at home.”

Kit and Shadow pulled away.

Kit rushed to the Swatbot holding Surge and leaped on its arm in the hopes of operating the manual controls in its arm. “I need a little help, Terios.”

Shadow took his inhibitor rings and started glowing red. He dodged a few attacks from the Swatbots as his Chaos energy built up.

Kit freed Surge, then went over to free Manic.

As soon as Surge and Manic were free, Shadow fired a blast of reddish-orange electricity.

The power blinked off for several minutes as the Swatbots exploded.

The power came back on.

Surge looked around. “Kit?”

Manic ran back to the pile of Swatbots and pulled Kit out of the wreckage. He checked the little fennec for signs of life, then shook his head. He carried Kit over to Shadow and Surge.

“Is he alive?” Surge asked.

“No, Babe, I’m sorry.” Manic said, voice breaking.

Shadow quickly walked his distraught friends to the nearby resistance hospital.

Sonic ran away from the Swatbot factory.

A few seconds later, the factory exploded.

Sonic laughed. “Another win for the Blue Blur.” He said over his communicator.

“Awesome job, big bro.” Tails replied. “Meet you at Uncle Chuck’s place.”

“See you in a second, bro.” Sonic said.

A literal second later, Sonic arrived at his and his uncle’s place.

Uncle Chuck was still working in his bedroom/office. He poked his head out the door. “Glad you’re home safe, Sonny boy.”

“Me too, Unc.” Sonic replied.

“Chili dogs are on the table.” Uncle Chuck said. He went back to his work.

Sonic joined Tails in the kitchen.

Tails slid a plate closer to Sonic. “Hey, bro.”

Sonic sat down. “Hey.”

Tails sighed. “Well, your brother nearly got captured today.”

“What happened?” Sonic asked.

“He and his tenrec girlfriend were hanging around the resistance ice cream shop with Kit and Terios.” Tails replied. “Swatbots raided the place. Kit and Terios saved them, but Kit was killed in an explosion. His funeral is on the day we have that big mission.”

Sonic slumped in his seat. “Ah, man. He was a nice guy.”

Tails nodded.

“What about Manic and his girl?” Sonic asked. “I heard Terios is pretty hard to kill and it would’ve come as a shock to you if it had happened and you would’ve mentioned it first.”

“You’re right.” Tails replied. “They’re okay.”

Sonic leaned on the table. “As okay as he can be.” He muttered.

“Unc still won’t let you meet him yet?” Tails asked.

“No, he wants to make sure I’m not easily influenced by anyone before he lets me meet him.” Sonic replied. “I’m a little iffy on it. He’s close friends with Terios and you know his rep. Then, I heard he almost got stabbed once and the dude that did it disappeared. Some other guy wound up in a hospital, nearly beaten to death, for crossing him a few weeks ago. I love my brother no matter what, but I don’t know if I want to hang around him if he’s a violent criminal.”

“I agree.” Tails said.

Sonic laid his arms on the table. “Poor guy; he would’ve been a completely different kid if he had been taken in by his real foster family.”

Manic stroked Surge’s long spines as she laid her head on his shoulder.

Both of them were in shock over the loss of their friend Kit.

Farrell stepped back in the room. “Well, you get to go to the funeral tomorrow.” He said. “The guy doesn’t have the money for the goods.”

“Great.” Manic replied. He looked at Surge. “I don’t mind if you stay, Babe, but I’m sure your parents want you home.”

“They’re drunk and won’t notice I’m out until tomorrow.” Surge muttered.

Farrell looked at Manic.

“It’s true.” Manic mouthed to Farrell.

“I’ll get you a blanket and pillow.” Farrell said, turning to leave. He glanced over his shoulder as he walked away. “No, she’s not staying in your room, Manic.”

“I know, I know.” Manic replied. He sighed.

“Don’t complain.” Surge said. “Your dad never pushed you into a tv during a fight.”

Manic glanced at Surge. “I’m not complaining.” He replied. “Just move out of their house. I’m afraid they’re gonna kill you.”

“Because they might kill me if they think I ran away.” Surge said. “I just have to tough it out until I can legally move out.”

“Alright, but if you need to leave sooner, Farrell won’t mind.” Manic replied.

“Thanks.” Surge said, playing with Manic’s spines. ”You’re awesome.”

Manic half smiled. “So are you, Babe.”
