Shadow drank his third cup of coffee as he sat at his desk and read his work emails.

Thankfully, he had the excuse that he had spent his honeymoon in a resort that didn’t have WiFi, so he couldn’t read his work emails over the week.

He didn’t think reading his work emails at home or anywhere else was a good idea since his personal WiFi, while secure, wasn’t as secure as the GUN office WiFi. However, his work ethic was compared to Sonic’s in that regard.

Sonic checked his emails at home after Sally settled in with a book and after their kids were in bed just so he wouldn’t have to go into work early and miss his morning run.

So to keep his superiors off of his back, Shadow would come in early. He didn’t argue the security issues simply because he hoped that GUN’s shady dealings with the organized crime ring known as the Guild would be exposed without anyone in GUN being silenced.

He would be the whistleblower himself, but he had his wife to think of.

Shadow sighed and rubbed his forehead as he read the email about the mandatory meeting in twenty minutes. He got up and walked toward the conference room and took his seat.

His colleague Rouge sat down beside him.

Rouge tested her ink pen on her note pad. “So how was the honeymoon?”

“Fine, it was too short.” Shadow said, sliding his empty coffee cup aside. “Sonia’s great; the only downside is her older brother.”

“Who’s her brother?” Rouge asked.

Sonic ran in and took his seat beside Shadow.

Shadow motioned to Sonic. “The blue buffoon over here.”

“Hey, Sonia told you to try to get along with me.” Sonic said, elbowing Shadow.

“She also told you to stop annoying me.” Shadow replied.

“Touché.” Sonic said. He tapped his feet on the floor as he waited.

Shadow leaned closer to Sonic. “You’re making too much noise.”

Sonic nodded. He began to quietly bounce his knees.

Shadow idly wondered why Sonia wasn’t as fidgety as her brothers were.

Finally, their superior Commander Towers walked in. He looked down his nose at the three, now four since Knuckles walked in, Mobians in the room.

Shadow quietly seethed. He knew how Commander Towers felt about Mobians and wondered why he or Rouge weren’t instated as commander of their division. It would make more sense, but they were lucky GUN hired them or even gave them benefits.

Shadow took the job simply for the benefits, as soon as his contract expired, he’d retire and run the business end of Sonia’s salon.

“Alright, since everyone’s here, let’s begin.” Commander Towers said. “What I’m about to tell you doesn’t leave this room.”

Shadow and his colleagues nodded.

“Someone in the Guild has threatened to go to the media about the entire operation.” Commander Towers said. “We’re not exactly sure who it is, but we suspect it was someone from the top of the organization.”

Sonic looked at Shadow as soon as their boss mentioned the Guild.

Manic belonged to the Guild and Sonic and Shadow kept their mouths shut about it for Aleena’s sake. To be fair, it did take them a few years to figure out what Manic did for a living since Manic was private about his life.

Sonic saw Manic a little more often than anyone in the family, but it was barely saying a lot.

The last time Shadow saw Manic was at Aleena’s house for Mother’s Day last year, when Manic and his wife Surge were parading around their newborn twins.

“So we want whoever it is to be taken care of.” Commander Towers said. “We have word he’ll be on the private yacht.”

Sonic exhaled through his nose.

Shadow knew the detail meant nothing as the top members of the Guild were wealthy and often owned things like yachts and fancy cars.

Though since Manic had mentioned things that made them think he had a yacht, it was reasonable for Sonic to worry that it was Manic.

“So, Shadow, we’re sending you to eliminate the suspect.” Commander Towers said, handing Shadow a folder. “The rest of you investigate the rest of the Guild.”

Commander Towers handed Rouge, Knuckles, and Sonic a set of folders.

“You’re dismissed.” Commander Towers said.

Everyone left the room.

Sonic followed Shadow to the bathroom. He looked around, then leaned closer. “If it’s Manic….” He whispered.

“I won’t.” Shadow replied. “I promise.”

Sonic nodded. He stepped over to the sink and splashed cold water on his face.

“You know you can’t protect him forever.” Shadow said. “He’s gotta learn his actions have consequences.”

Sonic turned the faucet off and stood over the sink, gripping the sides of the basin. “I know, but I don’t want my brother or his family dead.”

Shadow pulled a towel out of the dispenser and handed it to Sonic.

“I know he should’ve thought of that before he had kids.” Sonic said, drying his face. “I still love him no matter what he’s done. I know it doesn’t make sense to you; it doesn’t make sense to me. I guess it’s a brother thing.”

Shadow nodded.

“I’m fine.” Sonic said. “Don’t want those guys to be suspicious.”

Shadow left the room and headed back to his desk to make arrangements for the meeting.

He debated on how he could keep his promise and his job.

If GUN wanted Manic dead, if it was indeed Manic they wanted dead, then there wasn’t much he could do. Manic would die regardless if Shadow or anyone else killed him.

The only way Shadow could carry out his orders without breaking his promise (which would definitely ruin his relationship with Sonia) would be if Shadow “accidentally” shot Manic and sent him to the hospital.

Then someone else would be sent in to finish the job.

Shadow decided that would have to be his course of action. In this case, it would be him and Sonia or Manic. He couldn’t let Sonia be killed. He sighed. “I hate this job.” He muttered under his breath.
