It took days of communicating with the go-between (a fennec named Kit), but Shadow was finally able to finagle an invitation to talk business on the Guild member known as Rogue’s yacht.
Shadow had been on the yacht, somewhere in the Mobian sea, for two days without seeing this mysterious Rogue and his patience was wearing thin.
After hearing Kit and a crew member mention that Manic was in the first suite, Shadow decided to slip in and quietly take out Rogue.
Shadow quietly entered the suite and made his way to the couch as he pulled his gun out of the shoulder holster he had hidden under his trenchcoat. He approached the couch and got ready to take a shot.
Now, he had a good look at his target.
Manic was fast asleep on the couch.
Manic and Surge’s one year old daughter Cyber was laying on Manic’s chest. Her twin brother Glitch laid on Manic’s side.
Surge was snuggled between the back of the couch and Manic’s side where Glitch was partially laying on her side. Her head was on Manic’s chest.
Shadow sighed and started to lower the gun.
Manic woke up. His eyes widened as he saw the gun. “Shadow?” He whispered. “Please don’t.”
“I’m not.” Shadow replied. “Get out of this if you can.”
Shadow ran his hand through his spines as he walked out of the room. Now he had to figure out how to deal with GUN once and for all.
*
Shadow woke up, squinting his eyes.
“Grandfather, he’s waking up.” A girl said excitedly.
The sunlight shone through a nearby window, making it hard to get a good look at the girl aside from her long blonde hair that was shining in the light.
“Hold on, Maria.” The grandfather said.
Shadow recognized the voice as professor Gerald Robotnik. He had seen the man on television for an interview once about his studies on the Chaos Emeralds.
Why he watched this, he had no idea.
For that matter, he didn’t even know his own name or where he was.
Shadow sat up and opened his eyes as Gerald closed the blinds.
“Hey, Shadow.” Maria said, smiling. “We’re glad to see you’re okay.”
“That… is that my name?” Shadow asked.
“It’s the name embroidered on your coat.” Maria replied.
Shadow looked down at his black trenchcoat.
The name Shadow was embroidered in red cursive on the left side, under the lapel.
Shadow nodded. “That’s one thing crossed off my list.”
“Your what?” Maria asked.
“I don’t remember anything except my name and Gerald.” Shadow said, motioning to Gerald who was sitting down across from Maria. “I saw you on tv, professor, but I don’t remember why.”
“Amnesia.” Gerald said, handing Shadow a glass of water. “You must have hit your head. We found you washed up on the beach last night during our marshmallow roast.”
Shadow took a sip of the water he was given.
“It’ll take some time for your memory to return.” Gerald said.
Shadow nodded and looked at his hand, paying particular attention to the ring. “I’m married?”
Maria handed Shadow his licenses, passports, and a picture of Shadow and a dark pink female hedgehog. “We found these in your pockets.” She replied. “I believe your real name is Shadow. The other passport and license say Terios and it seems like a code name.”
Shadow looked at the documents. “I think you’re right.” He said. “How long will it take to get my memory back?”
“You may get your memories back eventually.” Gerald replied. “Until then, we need to find your family. You don’t seem to even exist in the system, so that will be difficult, but I’m working on it. Until then, just take it easy.”
“You could use some fresh air.” Maria said. “Want to go to the gelato shop with me? Maybe someone will recognize you.”
“Maria, that may not be a good idea.” Gerald replied. “Those extra ids may not mean he’s a secret agent. He could be a criminal.”
“But wouldn’t he have escaped to another country?” Maria asked. “He wouldn’t have separate ids for the same town.”
“I suppose.” Gerald replied.
“Criminal or not, Maria would be safe with me.” Shadow said.
“Okay, you two may go to the shop, then straight home.” Gerald replied.
Maria hugged Gerald. “Thanks, grandfather.”
Gerald chuckled and handed Maria some money. “Have fun.”
Maria picked up her sky blue and white air shoes. “Let’s go, we can walk to the shop.”
“Oh, wait.” Gerald said. He handed Shadow a pair of black boots with silver rings near the top. “Here’s some new Air shoes. I created them and I just so happened to have a pair in your size around. Your old ones were ruined.”
Shadow put the shoes on. “Thank you, professor.”

Shadow and Maria skated their way to the nearby shop.
It was a beautiful spring day. A gentle breeze raked through Shadow’s spines and Maria’s mid waist length hair.
The little town felt familiar to Shadow, like he had been here before, but he couldn’t remember anything about it.
The two finally made it to a shop called Port Mobius Gelato and Crepes.
Maria opened the door and led Shadow to the counter. “You can have samples of a flavor.” She said, “I like mango and strawberry gelato.”
Shadow pointed to the coffee gelato. “Do you know how that tastes?”
“No, but grandfather says it’s really good.” Maria said. “Especially with the vanilla gelato.”
“I’ll try coffee.” Shadow replied.
Shadow noticed a white female bat standing outside the shop. “You order, I think I know that bat outside.”
“Okay, but don’t leave without me.” Maria said. She ordered the gelato while Shadow headed outside.
Before he could reach her, the bat flew away.
Shadow shrugged it off. “Maybe she wasn’t looking for me.” He muttered under his breath.
Maria came out of the shop and handed Shadow a cup of coffee gelato garnished with a wafer. “Here you go.”
“Thanks.” Shadow said. He took the wafer out and ate it as they walked along.
“So who was she, Shadow?” Maria asked.
“Not sure.” Shadow replied. “She flew away before I could catch her.”
“Maybe she just looked like someone you know.” Maria said.
“Maybe.” Shadow replied.

Maria and Shadow made it back to the cottage.
“Grandfather, we’re home.” Maria called.
Gerald walked into the living room. “So far, I only came up with one find on Shadow.” He said. “A post on Facebook by a hedgehog named Aleena saying that her son-in-law Shadow is missing and nothing is being done.”
Gerald stepped over to the desktop computer on the desk in the corner. He pulled up the post as Shadow and Maria walked over.
“Oh, she says she can’t post his picture due to his line of work.” Maria said, pointing to the screen.
“I missed that.” Gerald replied.
“You have a message.” Maria said. She clicked on the message. “You contacted her?”
“Yes, because I’m pretty sure she’s talking about Shadow.” Gerald replied.
Maria opened the message.
A picture identical to the photo found in Shadow’s pocket was in the message.
Maria typed the message “yes, that’s him”, then pressed send.
Suddenly, the screen exploded.
Maria screamed and shielded her face.
Shadow pulled Maria to the floor and huddled down beside her as another shot hit Gerald in the back.
“Grandfather!” Maria cried.
Shadow crawled over to Gerald as shots fired over their heads. He checked for a pulse, but found none.
“Shadow?” Maria asked.
“He’s gone.” Shadow asked. “Do you have any guns?”
“Grandfather’s bedroom.” Maria said, voice shaking. “Don’t leave me.”
“I’m not.” Shadow replied.
Finally, the shots stopped.
Shadow and Maria crawled to the bedroom.
Since there were no windows in the room, the two stood up.
Shadow walked over to the gun safe and started picking the lock.
“You know how to pick locks?” Maria asked.
Shadow opened the safe and pulled out a couple of guns.
A loud wooden crack got their attention. “Someone’s in the house.” Maria whispered.
Shadow quietly led her out of the room, checking to make sure no one was in the halls.
He led her to her bedroom, then opened the window.
He climbed out, helped Maria out, and ran to the car with Maria.
Shadow opened the car door and let Maria in. He climbed in after her, then hot wired the car. “Stay down until I tell you it’s safe.” He said, pulling the car out of the driveway.
Maria slid down onto the floor as Shadow drove away.
As soon as the house was out of sight, Shadow sped up.
“It’s clear.” Shadow said.
Maria got back into her seat and buckled up. “You’re full of surprises.”
“I don’t remember how I learned any of these skills.” Shadow said. “I guess it was GUN training.”
“What now?” Maria asked.
“We go somewhere safe and contact Aleena.” Shadow replied. “She knows who I am and who the girl in the picture is.”
Maria pulled her phone out of her pocket and started searching.
“Turn it off.” Shadow said. “They’ll realize we’re missing and track us through your phone.”
Maria shut her phone off.
“I’m sorry about your grandfather.” Shadow said.
Maria nodded. She wiped her eyes with a tissue she found in the console.
