Shadow and Maria settled into their shabby motel room.
Shadow laid some blankets and a pillow on the couch
Maria sat on the bed. “So how are we gonna contact Aleena?”
“There’s a library across the street.” Shadow replied. “I’m going to go over there and-”
“You’re gonna leave me here?” Maria asked.
“No, if you want to go with me, you can.” Shadow replied. “I’ll be back as soon as I can if you want to stay and take a shower.”
A blue sphere crashed through the window.
Maria screamed.
Shadow realized the guns were in the car.
The blue figure landed, revealing it was a blue hedgehog.
Shadow picked up a pencil and eased himself around to face the hedgehog at an angle.
The hedgehog shook the glass out of his spines. “Ah, man, Shads. You-”
Shadow tackled the hedgehog and pinned him on the bed.
“Dude, seriously?” The hedgehog asked. “What-”
“Explain who you are and why we’re being followed.” Shadow said, poking the hedgehog in the neck with the pencil. “Or this pencil goes right into your carotid artery.”
“I was here to explain.” The hedgehog replied. “Sorry about the window, but I gotta make it look good.”
Shadow pressed the pencil against the hedgehog’s neck. “What is going on?”
“You don’t know?” The hedgehog asked.
Shadow eased up, then pressed the pencil harder into the hedgehog’s neck.
The hedgehog winced. “Shadow?” He asked. “What- please don’t kill me. Please- my family- Sonia.”
Shadow pulled the pencil away from the hedgehog’s neck. “I don’t remember anything about me other than my name and that I worked for GUN.”
The hedgehog sighed. “Amnesia.” He said. “I’m Sonic, your brother-in-law.”
“What’s my wife’s name?” Shadow asked. “What’s your mom’s name?”
“Sonia is my sister, your wife.” Sonic replied. “Aleena is my mom.”
Shadow loosened his grip on Sonic.
Sonic slowly sat up. “We worked in GUN together.” He said. “We had an assignment to investigate the crime ring called the Guild. You had to kill someone who was going to expose the corruption in GUN.”
Shadow slowly nodded.
“It’s got to do with my brother Manic.” Sonic said. “He was in the Guild and he recently paid his way out. He’s staying with Mom.”
“How far is it to Aleena’s house?” Shadow asked.
“It’s less than an hour if I run.” Sonic replied. “Ready to go?”
“Does anyone mind if Maria comes along?” Shadow asked. “Her grandfather was killed. I can’t leave her alone.”
“No, but what about her family?” Sonic asked.
“I only have an uncle I don’t have anything to do with.” Maria replied. “Grandfather disowned him for his unethical behavior. I’m not sure what he meant.”
“What’s his name?” Sonic asked.
“Dr. Ivo Robotnik.” Maria replied.
Sonic nodded. “Ah, Eggman.” He said. “I can’t blame your grandfather.”
“Okay, I’ll check out.” Shadow replied. “Then, we’ll go.”

Sonic, Shadow, and Maria arrived at a little house in Mobotropolis.
Sonic knocked on the door. “Mom?” He called. “I found him.”
Sonia opened the door and hugged Shadow before he could react.
“He’s got amnesia, sis.” Sonic said.
Sonia let go of Shadow. “Come on, let’s get you inside.” She said, leading Shadow inside the house.
Sonic and Maria followed Sonia and Shadow inside.
Aleena, Manic, and Surge were sitting in the living room and watching tv.
Manic did a double take at them. “Ah, Shads, I’m glad he found you.” He said, getting up. “I’m sorry about all of that.”
“All of what?” Shadow asked.
Manic ran his hand through his spines. “Uh….”
Aleena sighed. “I already know you were in the Guild.”
“Sorry, Ma.” Manic said. “Okay, after you left my suite, our friend Kit knocked you out. He didn’t know who you were and thought you were gonna kill my family.”
Sonic looked at Shadow. “You were gonna kill him?”
Shadow motioned to Manic. “He’s alive, isn’t he?” He asked. “Even if I was going to, he had… he had his kids laying on him. His wife was beside him.”
“You don’t remember their names?” Sonic asked.
“No.” Shadow replied. He motioned to Sonia. “I barely remember my wife.”
“Sonia.” Sonic said.
Sonia slipped her hand in Shadow’s hand. “It’s okay, we’ll help you.” She whispered.
“Anyway, Farrell let me buy myself out.” Manic said, sitting down. “He’s gonna expose GUN’s deal with the Guild. GUN still wants us out of the way though.”
Sonic sat on the arm of the couch. “How about the new identities?” He asked. “Can Farrell get us those?”
“It means I’d have to go back in.” Manic replied. “I asked Farrell about it before I paid him off. He said that if he did such a large favor, it puts me in debt with the Guild, meaning I’ll be in for a while. If I do it now, same deal. I’m out, I want to stay out.”
“Who’s the bat girl?” Shadow asked.
“Rouge.” Sonic replied.
Sonia jerked her hand away from Shadow.
“Why?”
Surge chuckled.
“It’s not funny, Surge.” Sonia snapped.
“I only saw her watching us at the gelato shop and she flew away before I could talk to her.” Shadow said.
Sonia sighed in relief.
“Rouge was your ex-girlfriend, Shads.” Sonic said. He shrugged. “Didn’t work out for some reason.”
Sonia looked at Shadow. “Boy, you really don’t remember anything. You normally hate that nickname.”
Surge got up and walked past Shadow, Sonia, and Maria. “Glad you’re alive, Shads.” She said over her shoulder. “Someone has to keep Sonic in line.”
Sonic rolled his eyes.
Aleena got up. “It’s late.” She said, turning the tv off. “We’ll figure out what to do tomorrow.”
