Shadow got up early to make coffee for everyone else.
Maria was already up, making coffee. She glanced over her shoulder. “Morning, Shadow.”
“Morning.” Shadow said, getting a cup out of the dish rack.
“I usually get up early and surprise my grandfather with coffee.” Maria said softly. She glanced at the window. “They don’t mention you in the news report. They said my grandfather had a heart attack.”
Shadow shook his head. “Not surprised.”
Manic, holding Cyber, came up the basement steps. “Oh, good, someone’s making coffee.”
“Good- aww! She’s adorable.” Maria squealed.
Manic held Cyber out to Maria. “You can hold Cyber.”
Maria took Cyber and played with her long spines. “She looks like her mama.”
Cyber huffed, then started crying.
Maria handed Cyber back to Manic. “Okay, here’s your daddy.”
“Oh, she needs a diaper change.” Manic said. “We’ll be right back.”
Manic carried Cyber downstairs.
Shadow poured coffee into his mugs.
Drones burst through the windows of the kitchen and living room.
Shadow grabbed one and spiked it on the ground.
The other drones opened fire.
A shot hit Maria in the chest.
“Maria!” Shadow screamed.
Sonic ran in and spin dashed a few of the drones.
Rouge flew in. “She wasn’t the target!” She yelled into her headset.
Manic ran upstairs and took out the last of the drones with his laser gun.
Shadow did his best to stop Maria’s bleeding.
“Mom!” Sonic yelled. “Maria needs help.”
Aleena rushed in and knelt down beside Maria.
Commander Towers came in. “Rouge, you’re supposed to take-”
Rouge and Manic pointed their guns at Commander Towers.
Sonic spin dashed Commander Towers. “I should tell you that someone exposed everything.” He said. “It’s all over the news, internet, and the police have all the documents. It’s public knowledge now.”
Commander Towers scoffed as he got to his feet. “So?” He asked. “You know we can silence whoever it is and deny everything.”
“Oh, and my bodycam caught everything and played this on the internet.” Sonic said, motioning to his bulletproof vest.
Surge and Sonia finally came in. “I called the police.”
“Okay, we both called the police.” Surge said.
Aleena sighed. “She’s gone.”
“I’m sorry.” Shadow said, letting go of Maria’s hand. He got up and snatched the gun out of Manic’s hand. He pointed the gun at Towers.
Sonia grabbed Shadow’s shoulders. “Shadow, it won’t bring her back.”
Shadow glanced at Sonia.
Sirens wailed just outside the house.
“The police are here.” Sonia said. “Please, I don’t want you to go to prison.”
Shadow lowered the gun as Surge let the police and Knuckles in.
