Manic walked a reluctant Sonic into the Hot Topic at the mall in their town. “I’m sure you can find Sally a nice cargo skirt here.”

“I don’t think she wants one with chains hanging off of it.” Sonic said. “Or skulls or whatever on it.”

“You can get a plain one with chains that you can remove.” Manic replied. “It’s not exactly a goth or emo store now. It’s like a pop culture shop with a side of goth or emo. Oh, and you know that dress I bought Sonia for Christmas last year that she loved? I bought it here and cut off all the tags.”

“Okay, I get your point.” Sonic replied.

Manic walked Sonic over to the skirts. “Here.” He said, pulling a black cargo skirt off the rack. “See? I told you they had plain ones.”

Sonic took it from Manic. “That’s her size too.” He replied. “Thanks. Well, I have what I need.”

Manic turned around. “Alright, let’s- whoa.”

Sonic looked at Manic. “What are you looking at?” He asked. He turned around; his lip curled. “Ugh, Surge? She works here now?”

“That’s the girl who used to work for Eggman?” Manic asked.

Sonic nodded. “Yep.” He replied. “I heard Amy’s counseling her.”

Manic shrugged. “I think it’s working.” He said. He started walking over to Surge.

Sonic reached for Manic’s arm. “Dude, she tried to-”

Manic leaned on the counter. “Hi.” He said, grinning.

Surge looked up and leaned across the counter. “I’m so glad my shift is over.”

“Huh?” Manic asked.

Surge grinned. “You want to get something to eat and hang out?”

“Sure.” Manic replied. He looked at Sonic. “You’re not talking me out of this, bro. So-”

Sonic sighed. “Go ahead, I can run home.” He said. “You’re not gonna listen to me anyway.”

“Oh, he’s your brother, Sonic?” Surge asked.

“Yeah, this is Manic.” Sonic replied. “We’re triplets. Our sister is married to Shadow.”

Surge played with Manic’s spines. “You’re way cuter than your brother.”

Manic laughed. “Thanks.”

Sonic rolled his eyes and set the skirt on the counter.

Surge stepped back to the register and rang it up for him. “Okay, so… Manic, you want to use your reward on this?”

“Yeah, go ahead.” Manic replied.

“Okay, that’s fifteen even.” Surge said.

Sonic paid for the skirt, picked up the bag and left without a word.

Surge walked over to the office to clock out. “He does know that Shadow and Knuckles tried to kill him before, right?”

“Eh, he’s not happy with Shadow and he’s our brother-in-law, so don’t feel bad.” Manic replied. “Knuckles was tricked into that, so he kind of gave him a pass or whatever on it, I think. I can’t keep track of all of his friends or the battles he’s been in.”

Surge clocked out. “Okay, let’s go.”

Manic walked Surge out of the store. “But you’re getting help, right?” He asked. “This isn’t a scheme, like you’re not using me to get close to him, right?”

“I’m in counseling.” Surge replied. “Your brother annoys me, but I’m not working for Eggman now.”

“Good.” Manic said. “So where do you want to eat?”

“Do you like sushi?” Surge asked.

Manic grinned. “There’s one thing we have in common.”

Sonic finally made it home. He hid Sally’s birthday present in the living room closet, then headed to the kitchen.

Sonia and Shadow were already there for dinner, helping Sally set out the plates and cups.

“You won’t believe this.” Sonic said.

“Where’s Manic?” Sally asked.

“I’m getting to that.” Sonic replied. “Apparently, Surge works at the mall and Manic went out on a date with her.”

“So?” Sonia asked. “He has a lot of friends he spontaneously hangs out with.”

Sonic shook his head. “Did you miss the ‘date’ part?”

Sonia squealed. “Aww!”

“Surge tried to kill me, Sonia!” Sonic snapped.

Sonia folded her arms. “Didn’t Shadow try to kick you in the head once?” She asked. “One good blow to the head in the right spot could kill you.”

Sonic leaned against the counter. “Why is it always head kicks with you, Shadow?”

“Exactly what Sonia said.” Shadow replied.

“So you were trying to kill me.” Sonic said.

“I couldn’t be that lucky.” Shadow replied. He glanced at Sonia and smirked.

Sonia playfully shoved Shadow.

“It’s GUN training to end fights as quickly as possible and use anything as a weapon.” Shadow said. “You know that pencil thing from John Wick? Where do you think the writers got that idea from?”

Sonic sighed. “Out of all the girls who have flirted with Manic and he never showed any romantic interest in them, now he’s in love with my enemy.”

Sonia got the pizza out of the oven. “I think you’re overreacting.” She replied. “They just met and you’re acting like they’re getting married tomorrow. There’s the possibility it might not work out.”

“Oh, she’ll stay with him just to get back at me.” Sonic replied. He paced around the table. “Ugh… if he does marry her, then she’ll be family. I’ll have to be nice to her. Oh, man, I have to be extra nice if they have kids. This is a nightmare.”

“I don’t see her as the type to want kids.” Shadow said, leaning on the back of a chair.

Sonic stopped pacing. “Back to the spite thing.”

Shadow nodded. “Right, she’s more spiteful than a Seinfeld villain.”

Sonia and Sally burst out laughing.

“What?” Sonic asked.

“That’s the stupidest theory I have ever heard.” Sonia replied. “Do you seriously think she’d go through pregnancy and childbirth for kids she doesn’t necessarily want just to get back at you because you don’t want her to be with your brother?”

“Exactly what she said.” Sally said.

Shadow looked at Sonia and Sally. “Have you met Surge?” He asked. “I kinda agree with you two, but I don’t put anything past her.”

Sally’s phone chimed.

Sally checked her phone. “Sonic, get it out of your system now.” She said, “Manic is coming over with Surge.”

“Why is he bringing her?” Sonic asked.

“I don’t know.” Sally replied. “Sonic, he texted me because he knew you didn’t like her and wanted me to talk sense to you. Do you really want this to drive a wedge between you and your brother?”

“No, but he doesn’t care about that.” Sonic said. “He knew it would be an issue, but went out with her anyway. I broke up with Amy just to keep it from being an issue.”

Sonia scoffed. “Yeah, that’s the only reason.”

Sally nodded. “Anyway, she’s clearly special to him. Try to give her a chance.”

Sonic shook his head. “No way.”

“You can make the situation worse, y’know.” Sonia said. “The forbidden romance thing. You’ll make it more appealing to them by being so against it.”

Sonic snorted. “Well, I’m sorry, I can’t fake it.”

Someone knocked on the door.

“That’s them.” Sally said. “Be nice, Sonic.”

Sonic gave Sally a look as Sonia went to answer the door.

“Or ruin your relationship with your brother.” Sally said, tossing her hands up. “I’m not dealing with your childishness.”

Sonia walked Manic and Surge in.

Manic was holding Surge’s hand, his arm wrapped around hers.

Sonic shook his head.

Manic rolled his eyes. “You do realize I couldn’t stand Amy while you were dating her and I never said a word, Sonic.”

“Yes, you did.” Sonic said. “You called her psycho babe and a bunny boiler to her face.”

“She had a picture of you in the shower hanging up in her locker.” Manic replied. “That’s psychotic.”

Surge furrowed her brow. “What the heck is a bunny boiler?”

Manic looked at Surge. “You never saw Fatal Attraction?”

“You didn’t either.” Sonic said. “You looked it up online because Duck Dodgers and Mystery Science Theater 3000 made references to the movie.”

Manic crossed his arms. “I stand by what I said.”

“Okay, so you’re both even.” Sally said. “Please, can we have a civil dinner together?”

Everyone agreed.
