Sonic huffed and tossed his phone on the couch.
Sally slung her mini backpack purse over her shoulder. “What did Manic or Surge do to annoy you this time?”
“He invited her to our band practice.” Sonic said. “Oh, and he wants us to film a short dance video too.”
Sally leaned on the back of the couch. “Would it kill you to be happy for him?” She asked. “I understand your concerns about Surge, but she seemed to have changed. She was being manipulated by her bosses, Sonic. So was Knuckles, yet you won’t give her a chance.”
Sonic rolled his eyes. “Because Knuckles wasn’t that much of a threat, while Surge nearly drowned or electrocuted me.” He replied. “Can’t remember which because I think I’m trying to block that memory out or I got a head injury. Oh, and it’s not like Sonia wanted to date Knux.”
“Surge had cyborganic parts, she might have been following a program.” Sally said.
“That’s a good theory, but still….” Sonic muttered.
“Anyway, I should be home in time for dinner.” Sally said, checking her watch.
“Have fun with your dad, Sal.” Sonic replied. He got up and hugged Sally. “I love you.”
Sally sighed. “She’s not gonna kill you, Sonic.” She said, rolling her eyes upward. “Don’t be so dramatic.”
“I do love you, Sal.” Sonic replied. He kissed Sally. “Tell your dad I said hello and Uncle Chuck and I will see him next week.”
“Okay, have fun.” Sally said.

Sonic let Sonia, Manic, and Surge inside the house. “Hey, where’s Shadow?”
“Mowing the lawn.” Sonia said. “As soon as he’s done with that and showers, he’ll pick up dinner.”
“Ah, does he need help?” Sonic asked.
“If you’re gonna do this every time I bring Surge around, we’ll go.” Manic replied.
Sonic looked at Manic incredulously. “You’d choose her over your brother?”
Manic rubbed the back of his neck. “Uh, yeah, bro.” He said. “But I’m hoping it won’t come to that.”
Surge held her hands up defensively. “Don’t look at me, I’m trying to get along, at least for Manic’s sake.”
“I’m sorry.” Sonic said.
“Okay, let’s make our video first.” Manic said.

Sonic, his siblings, and Surge gathered in Sonic’s downstairs recording studio.
Sonia and Surge sat on the couch while Sonic stretched and Manic set up the phone stand.
Manic looked up from setting the phone on its stand. “Say, do you want to join us, babe?”
“What are you doing?” Surge asked.
“Making one of their stupid dance videos.” Sonia muttered.
“Pass.” Surge replied.
Manic hit the record button, then ran over to Sonic.
Manic and Sonic started dancing.
Sonia sighed. “They found a way to embarrass me and have an excuse to do stupid stuff at the same time.”
“They’re not insanely desperate for views, are they?” Surge asked.
Sonia shook her head. “Surprisingly, no.” She replied. “They don’t do dangerous stuff or pranks. Just this or goofing around the house when they’re not posting videos of our band.”
Sonic shut the phone off and walked over to Sonia and Surge. He sat down on the computer chair.
Manic picked up his phone and walked over to the couch. He sat down on the arm of the couch beside Surge and between Sonic.
“So you do this a lot?” Surge asked.
“Not a lot.” Manic replied. “It’s just for fun, we’re more serious about our music videos.”
Sonia smirked. “You need to see their belly dance video, Surge.”
Manic’s and Sonic’s faces turned red.
Surge laughed. “Seriously?”
Sonia pulled her phone out of her pocket. “I could’ve killed them for wearing my bras.”
Manic’s eyes widened. “No, tell me it wasn’t.”
“I wish I was joking.” Sonia replied.
Manic cringed. “Dude, you were supposed to buy the outfits from a store, not borrow hers.” He said, smacking Sonic’s arm.
Sonic rubbed the back of his head. “Well, I was too… uh… embarrassed, I guess, to buy them and they were too expensive just to wear them for five minutes.” He replied. “I made sure to get the clean ones off of the clothing rack she hangs her clean clothes on to dry.”
Manic shuddered. “Ugh, can you soak yourself in peroxide or bleach?”
“No, besides you use all the hot water when you take a shower and this was a year ago, I think you’re good.” Sonia replied. She turned her phone on and showed Surge the video. “Here’s the video.”
“Don’t show her.” Manic said, reaching for the phone.
Sonia held it out of Manic’s reach, but where Surge could see it.
Surge laughed. “You’d actually be a pretty cute girl, Manic.”
Sonia grimaced. “I wasn’t expecting that reaction.”
“Alright, let’s get to work.” Sonic said, getting up. “I guess we’re gonna try out the new song Manic wrote. That’s why you invited her, right?”
Manic got up. “That and she’s never seen me play before.” He replied. He walked over to the drum set.
*
Manic took a sip of water. “So what did you think?”
“You are awesome.” Surge said. She hugged Manic.
Sonia checked her watch. “Shadow is on his way with dinner.” She said, reading the message. “Can one of you please explain what revenge guac and justice fruit drink is?”
Manic and Sonic laughed.
“What?” Surge asked. “Is that a meme?”
“Ask him if he had to prove he was a lawyer to get the lemonade.” Manic replied.
“No, what is the joke?” Sonia asked.
“Revenge guac… I don’t know, he randomly said it while we were making guacamole and chips to eat while we watched John Wick.” Manic replied. “Lemons being the ‘fruit of justice, the only fruit lawyers can touch’ came from someone’s post about feeding hundreds of lawyer commercials to a chatbot and asking it to make a lawyer commercial.”
“And it came up with that?” Surge asked.
Manic shrugged. “Apparently.”
Sonic checked his phone. “Sally’s on her way too.”
“Oh, say, did you tell Surge about the cow tipping video?” Sonia asked.
Manic shook his head. “The less said about it, the better.”
The triplets and Surge walked up the stairs.
Manic leaned closer to Sonia. “Why are you telling her that?” He asked. “Did Sonic put you up to it?”
“No, I figured it wasn’t a big deal since Shadow and Sally knew about it.” Sonia replied. “Why should she be out of the loop?”
“Good point.” Manic said.

Shadow set the bags on the table as Sally walked in. “Okay, the joke is officially old now.” He said. “I’m done. That was the last time I’ll mention it.”
Manic pulled a few boxes out of one of the bags. “Fine with me.”
Sally got some plates out of the cabinet. “Oh, Surge, I saw Amy.” She said, setting the plates on the table. “She said you’re making great progress.”
Surge dropped a box on the table. “What?”
“Oh, she didn’t give any details.” Sally replied.
Surge bit her lip.
Manic rubbed Surge’s shoulders. “Hey, you need to talk?”
“I don’t feel like it.” Surge muttered.
“You need to go?” Manic asked.
“But you’re hungry.” Surge replied.
“I’m fine, Babe.” Manic said. “I can eat later. Do you need to go?”
“Yeah.” Surge replied.
Manic nodded. “We gotta go, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, we understand.” Sonia replied.
Sonic hugged Manic. “See you, bro.” He said. “Be careful.”
“I will, thanks.” Manic replied. He took Surge’s hand and walked her out the door.
Sonia waited until she heard the door close. “I hope that won’t be a problem.”
“What was that about?” Sonic asked.
Sally bit her lip. “That was all she said.” She said, “I never would’ve mentioned it if I had known it would upset her.”
Sonic hugged Sally. “Thank you.”
Sally pushed Sonic away. “I know you don’t like her, but that’s not cool, Sonic.” She replied. “She clearly has some issues. That could’ve set her back in whatever progress she has made.”
Sonic sighed. “I’m sorry, I’ll check on them later.”
*
Manic glanced at Surge as he drove her to her apartment. “So what happened?”
“She told me she wouldn’t say anything.” Surge replied.
“It’s not like she gave details.” Manic said.
Surge leaned back in her seat. “I told her not to say anything at all.”
“Oh, then that’s different.” Manic replied. “Is it even helping at all?”
“No.” Surge said. “I’m just pretending to be better so she’ll leave me alone.”
Manic nodded. “I’m sorry, I was trying to be supportive, but I hadn’t ever trusted her.”
Surge huffed. “Now you tell me.”
“I’m sorry.” Manic replied. “I… I should’ve said something.”
Surge played with her spines as she stared out the window.
“Babe?” Manic asked. “I didn’t mean to make you mad. I am so sorry.”
“It’s fine.” Surge replied. “I’m not mad.”
Sally slung her mini backpack purse over her shoulder. “What did Manic or Surge do to annoy you this time?”
