Manic headed to the skate park where he was supposed to meet Surge. He drummed his fingers on the concrete, wondering what was taking her so long or if he was early.
Surge, wearing a baggy hoodie and sweatpants, shuffled over.
Manic looked Surge over as she flopped down beside him.
Surge’s spines were down and messy. She hadn’t even bothered with putting on her wristbands or her earrings. The thumb holes she had cut in her hoodie’s sleeves made up for the fact she wasn’t wearing gloves.
Manic raised an eyebrow. “Rough morning?”
Surge slowly nodded.
“Babe, are you sure you’re okay?” Manic asked. He eased closer to her and put his arm around her. “You can tell me anything. I won’t be mad or anything. I love you and I want to help you.”
Surge sighed. “You don’t need me.”
Manic flinched. “What?”
“You don’t need me.” Surge said, easing out from under Manic’s arm. “I….”
“What the heck is she talking about?” Manic thought. “Of course I- wait, is she breaking up with me? Oh, no, please tell me this isn’t happening.”
Manic drew shaky breaths. He felt like his insides were in knots as he desperately tried to think of something to say to Surge. Though, he wasn’t even listening to a word she said.
Surge got up. “I’m sorry, I-”
“No, don’t leave.” Manic said, reaching for Surge. “I love you, Babe.”
“I’m sorry, Manic.” Surge replied. She ran away.
Manic got up. “Surge, wait!”
Surge picked up her pace.
Manic chased after her.
Surge reached her motorcycle, quickly started it, and took off.
Manic stood there, staring in disbelief. He only had his skateboard. He called Surge as he went back into the park to get his skateboard.
No answer, but of course, she wouldn’t answer while driving.
He decided he’d ride his skateboard back to his house (which was the guest house in Sonic and Sally’s yard), get his car, and head to Surge’s place to talk to her.
Manic glanced at his vest pocket, where he had the ring he was going to give her if she accepted his marriage proposal.
*
Sonic glanced at the guest house. “Have you seen Manic lately?”
“No, I haven’t.” Sally said, pouring coffee. “I hadn’t seen him for almost a week. Maybe you need to check on him.”
Sonic went outside and headed for the guest house.
The curtains were closed and there didn’t appear to be any lights on.
Sonic reached to knock on the door, but stopped when he heard Manic sobbing. He opened the door.
Manic was curled up on his bed while crying.
“She dumped you, huh?” Sonic asked.
“Shut up!” Manic yelled. “I know you’re happy about it. I don’t want to hear it.”
Sonic sighed and walked in. “No, I’m not. I’m sorry, bro.” He said, sitting beside Manic. “What happened?”
Manic slowly sat up. His tank top hung loosely off his body.
“You’ve lost weight?” Sonic asked. “When was the last time you ate?”
Manic rubbed his temples. “It’s been a few days.”
Sonic ran to the kitchen, got a bottle of water, then ran back to the guest house. He handed Manic a bottle of water. “I think you haven’t drank much water either.”
Manic chugged the bottle of water, then handed the empty bottle to Sonic.
“What happened?” Sonic asked.
“I don’t know.” Manic replied. “She just… had a breakdown or something. She said I didn’t need her and… I didn’t hear the rest, I was panicking. She just ran off when I started trying to tell her I love her and I didn’t want to leave her. I’ve sent a few texts and called her a few times. I can’t reach her.”
Sonic nodded.
“I know she has her issues.” Manic said. “I didn’t mind. I wanted to help her. It’s like she thinks she doesn’t think it’s possible to get better. I told her to find a different therapist, but I don’t think she ever did. She never mentioned it to me.”
Sonic patted Manic’s back. “I’m sorry, bro.”
Manic reached for his nightstand and pulled a small box off of it. “I was gonna ask her to marry me.” He said, opening the box, revealing a white gold ring with a large diamond in the center.
“That must’ve cost a fortune.” Sonic replied.
“It did, I guess.” Manic said. “Uncle Chuck left it to me. I thought she’d love it. A couple of the stones fell out and I had small onyx stones added in.”
“So this came out of nowhere?” Sonic asked.
“I think so, but she was the first girl I ever really loved.” Manic replied. “So I guess I’m no real expert on girls.”
Sonic hugged Manic. “I’m so sorry, bro.” He said. “I didn’t like her, but you were happy with her. I finally made my peace with it about a few months ago.”
Manic sighed. “You finally accepted her and this happens.”
“I’ll take care of it, I promise.” Sonic said, getting up. He raced out of the guest house.

Sonic found Surge at the park, sitting on a bench, and marched over to her.
Surge looked at Sonic. “Oh….”
“Yeah.” Sonic said, crossing his arms. “Look, I would be happy if it wasn’t for Manic being absolutely devastated. He hasn’t cried like that since we were twelve and he saw the ending of Terminator 2. Actually, he’s cried harder over this because he hasn’t left his house in three days and is barely eating. He’s lost about five pounds.”
Surge held her arms. “I didn’t want to hurt him.”
Sonic sat down near Surge. “Then why’d you do that?”
Surge slumped her shoulders. “I don’t know.” She replied. “I figured I’d wind up hurting him somehow. I’m pretty messed up and I don’t want him to get dragged into it.”
“Did counseling help at all?” Sonic asked.
“No.” Surge replied. “I found a new therapist after I stopped talking to Amy. I thought it was just her, but my other therapist spouted off with the same ‘I know how you feel’ and a lot of ‘feel good’ junk. They have no idea.”
“I don’t think you should completely give up on getting help.” Sonic said. “Whatever you do, can you go talk to Manic? He’s heartbroken.”
Surge turned, nearly putting her back to Sonic. “I think he’d be better off without me.” She replied. “He’s sweet and a little more social than I am. I don’t want to hold him back.”
“So you’re an extreme introvert like Shadow.” Sonic said, leaning on the arm of the bench. “We’re used to it with him, so we can handle you. I don’t think it bothers Manic as much as you think. He adores you. He never had any interest in dating until he met you, so I’d think you should feel honored.”
Surge looked at Sonic. “For real?”
“He’s got an engagement ring for you.” Sonic replied. “You obviously mean everything to him.”
Surge sighed.
“He loves you, Surge.” Sonic said. “He’s willing to help you and support you. There’s not a lot of guys who’ll do that. Remember what he said about Amy? She used to stalk me years ago. I think I made the right decision to break it off even when she got help, so that’s not the best example and you’re not like her, but my point is I didn’t stick with her while she got help.”
“Thanks, Sonic.” Surge replied. “I get what you’re trying to say.”
Sonic got up and held his hand out to Surge. “Are you gonna talk to him on your own or do I have to drag you over there?”
Surge got up. “I’ll talk to him.” She replied. “Thanks, Sonic.”

Surge knocked on the door of Manic’s home. “Babe?” She asked. She flinched as something crashed inside the guest house.
Manic groaned. “Hold on.”
“Are you okay?” Surge asked.
Manic opened the door. His spines were even messier and his tank top was dirty. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You don’t look fine.” Surge said. “You stink.”
“I’m sorry.” Manic replied. “Uh, do I need to shower first?”
“Yeah.” Surge said.
Manic ran his hand through his spines. “Okay, uh….”
“You’re worried this is an official breakup?” Surge asked.
“Yes.” Manic replied.
Surge sighed. “I guess we should talk first.”
Manic stepped aside, letting her in and revealing he had knocked over the little table he used as a drawing desk.
Manic put his futon back into a couch, then sat down.
Surge sat down on the futon.
“Babe.” Manic said, holding Surge’s hands. “I love you in spite of that. You’re getting help and that’s what counts. I’ll support you in any way I can. Just… please don’t leave me. I love you.”
Surge leaned back, holding Manic’s face and stroking his cheeks. “I’m not leaving you.” She replied. “I love you too. I’m sorry.”
Manic breathed a sigh of relief. “Good; good.” He said. He reached to hug her.
Surge gently pushed him back. “Shower first.”
Manic laughed. “Right.” He said, getting up.
Surge, wearing a baggy hoodie and sweatpants, shuffled over.
