Danny

Danny’s enthusiasm was short-lived. He realized he had to come clean with Mr. Lancer. He just didn’t feel right about winning the way he did.

“Mr. Lancer, wait up,” he said.

Mr. Lancer was walking away from Danny, reveling in the acclaim he expected. “I can see it now, Tetslaff.” He stuck his tongue out and blew a raspberry.

“Mr. Lancer, wait,” Danny said, running up to him in the hallway. “I have to be honest. I cheated.”

“Cheated?” Mr. Lancer’s eyes narrowed.

Danny said, “Well, I borrowed some of my parents’ technology.”

Before he could say any more, Sam and Tucker joined him, Sam carrying the Fenton Foamer.

She said, “You mean this stuff, like the Fenton Foamer, which causes a psychosomatic reaction in whomever’s exposed to it, causing them to experience their worst fear?” She and Tucker smiled nervously.

“Yeah, that,” Danny said, glad Sam had an excuse prepared.

“Daniel,” Mr. Lancer said, “the good news for you is, I don’t care. I have two scary rooms, and it’s midnight. Let the party begin!” He threw open the front doors of the haunted house.

That’s when Dad and Mom arrived to ruin everything.

“Nobody move!” they shouted together. They blasted Lancer with their Fenton Foamers, which covered him and the trio in green slime.

“Ha! Nice theme, Lancer,” came Ms. Tetslaff’s voice. She and a group of costumed party-goers stood on the path to the doorway. “Early oil spill. Come on. Let’s get out of here.”

Mr. Lancer glared at them as they left.

“So… can we go?” Tucker asked.

Mr. Lancer raised an eyebrow at them. Then he sighed. “If you must.”

Danny, Tucker, and Sam scurried away, not wanting to deal with Mr. Lancer and his foul mood.

Mom smiled at them as they approached. “How did it go, sweetie?”

“Um…” Danny said.

“Great!” Sam said. “Danny won!”

Dad narrowed his eyes. “Won what?”

“Just a little competition between Danny and Dash,” Tucker said calmly.

“Yeah,” Sam added. “Nothing nefarious.”

“Well,” Mom said, “you kids should go home. It’s late, and it’s a school night.”

They all agreed and headed home.

Danny

Danny’s parents patrolled late into the night, giving him a chance to slip into the Ghost Zone and check on things. Helen the Lunch Lady waited for him, floating back and forth in front of the portal.

“What were you thinking?” she roared, getting in his face.

Danny shrunk back. “W-what are you talking about?”

“You stole Fright Knight's sword!” Hellen accused. “Do you know what kind of destruction he could have unleashed? You are lucky he did not release the Ghost King!”

“Ghost King?”

Helen sighed and covered her face with her hand. “I forget you are a new ghost and do not know everything. Just know that he was—is—a tyrant, and we do not want him awakened from the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep. Fright Knight is his most loyal servant.”

“Wow, okay,” Danny said, trying to process. “I… have so many questions.”

Helen’s expression turned steely. “First, promise me you will never do anything so reckless again.”

“I promise,” Danny said, but Helen continued to stare at him. He gulped.

Sighing, she said, “What am I saying. You are just a child. Of course, you will do more reckless things. Know that I am here for you if you ever get into trouble.”

That startled Danny. “Um, thank you.”

Helen finally smiled. “You are welcome. Now, what are your questions?”

Danny considered for a moment, sorting through the thoughts in his mind. “Tell me more about the Ghost King. Why is he in a sarcophagus?”

Helen’s face went dark. “As I said, he’s a tyrant. Long ago, ages before I was even born, the Ancients locked him away in the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep. It was a long and arduous battle, so I hear.”

“The Ancients?” Danny asked. “Who are they?”

“They are ghosts as old as the Infinite Realms,” Helen explained. “They have unique powers that are rarely possessed by other ghosts. They cannot die, only locked away, like the Ghost King.”

“So,” Danny wondered, his face scrunched in confusion, “does that mean the Ghost King is an Ancient?”

“Yes,” Helen said somberly. “He was supposed to rule over the Infinite Realms, as his name implies, but something went wrong.”

“What went wrong?”

“I don’t know the details, just what I have already told you. Perhaps it was the Ring of Rage that turned him evil. Perhaps he was evil to begin with. Either way, the other Ancients saw fit to lock him away.”

“Ring of Rage?”

Helen sighed. “You are full of questions, aren’t you?”

Danny gave her a sheepish look.

“The Ring of Rage,” Helen said, “if used alongside the Crown of Fire, can give the wearer infinite power. It was taken by the Ancients before the Ghost King could be subdued. It is said that the Crown of Fire still rests on the Ghost King’s head.”

“They sound like serious trouble,” Danny muttered.

“Yes, so be glad that Fright Knight didn’t help the Ghost King.”

Danny was silent for a moment, letting that sink in. He almost caused an absolute disaster! “I’m… I’m sorry,” he said quietly, head hanging low.

Helen patted him on the shoulder. “It’s alright, little one. You were brave in fighting off Fright Knight. All’s well that ends well, right?”

Danny smiled weakly at her. Then, he asked, “How do you know all of this, if it happened so long ago?”

Helen waved a hand dismissively. “Oh, you learn things when you are a ghost for so long. Ghosts love to gossip.”

“Thanks for answering all of my questions,” Danny said.

“Of course, dear boy!”

Danny was about to say goodbye when another thought hit him. “Um, I just thought of another one. Is there something special about Halloween? I think I felt stronger the closer it got to midnight.”

Helen smiled. “Yes, there is something special about Halloween. More specifically, the Day of the Dead after it. It is when the veil is thinnest between the human realm and the Infinite Realms. In some places, portals even open. You will feel the ambient power of the Infinite Realms back in the human realm for twenty-four hours. Well, less, now, but you know what I mean.”

“Yeah,” Danny said.

“Do you have any more questions?”

Danny thought about it. Then he remembered the alternate version of himself the blob ghosts showed him. He looked down and fiddled with his hands. “Yeah, I do. I think I’m changing. Do you know about the blob ghosts?”

“Yes, of course,” Helen said.

“They showed me something,” Danny went on. “They turned into me, but… not me. I was…” He paused. “I looked scary. And sometimes, I get really angry. As a human, I mean. I… I’m afraid I’m turning into a monster.”

Helen was silent. After a moment, Danny couldn’t stand it, and looked at her. She had a contemplative expression. She saw the fear in his eyes and said, “You are not turning into a monster.”

Danny’s shoulders relaxed.

Helen continued, “You are just going through the natural changes of being a ghost. You saw how I got when my Obsession took over, remember? Am I a monster?”

Danny shook his head quickly. “No, you’re sweet and kind.”

Helen smiled. “Thank you, child. It is true that anger will be more difficult to control, but control it you can. It will be easier once you learn what your Obsession is.”

“I wish I knew what that was,” Danny said.

“Do not worry too much. You will learn. Anything else?”

Even if Danny had more questions, he wasn’t ready to ask them. He said, “That’s all for now. Thank you for your time.”

They said their goodbyes, and Danny decided it was time for bed.

Danny - Monday, school

During school the next day, Danny was surprised to find out he wasn’t as tired as Tucker or Sam. He figured it had to do with his ghost half and went about his day as normal.

And, as normal, Dash came up to harass him at lunch.

“What did you do to my skeletons?” Dash questioned loudly.

“Nothing!” Danny said, throwing his hands up in a show of innocence.

Dash grabbed the collar of Danny’s shirt and hoisted him in the air. “They turned into zombies. I know you had something to do with it.”

“Are you sure you weren’t imagining it?” Sam asked smoothly. “There were weird fumes at the haunted house last night causing hallucinations.”

“What about the scary guy on a flying horse outside the house?” Dash asked, slightly less sure of himself.

Sam shrugged. “Hallucinations.”

Looking confused, Dash dropped Danny, much to Danny’s relief. “Yeah, well, don’t ever do it again!” Dash shouted and walked off.

Danny gave Sam a grateful look. “Thanks for not mentioning the Fenton Foamers.”

“No problem,” Sam said. “You know I’ll always have your back.”
