Manic drummed his fingers on the table, waiting on Sonic to pick up the phone.
Sonic answered. “H-”
“We’re having twins.” Manic said, grinning.
“Manic?” Sonic asked.
“Oh, yeah, bro.” Manic replied.
“Congratulations.” Sonic said. “I just processed what you said.”
“Thanks, bro.” Manic replied. “Hey, I gotta call Sonia, so-”
“Are you gonna tell Mom?” Sonic asked.
Manic sighed.
“Dude, you said you’d call her.” Sonic replied. “If you patched things up, I’m sure she’d let you move back in until you can find a place and if you help with expenses.”
Manic ran his hands through his spines. “She does have a bigger place.”
“Don’t let that be the only reason you call her.” Sonic said.
Manic flopped back on his bed. “Doesn’t it bother you that she’s trying to be a mom now that we’re grown?”
“Yeah, it does a little.” Sonic said. “But she’s our mom and I’m trying to forgive her. It would help you to do the same, bro.”
“Kay, Sonic.” Manic said. “I’ll call.”
“I’m sorry, I’m not trying to annoy you.” Sonic replied. “See you later.”
“Yeah, see you.” Manic said.
Sonic hung up.
Manic rolled his eyes. “Like I’m calling our so-called Ma.” He muttered under his breath as he looked for Sonia’s number.

Manic laid awake that night, staring up at the ceiling and listening to the sounds of light traffic and rain.
Surge was asleep, snuggled against Manic’s side with her head on his chest.
Manic idly stroked Surge’s spines, thinking about the family his twins would have. He didn’t have grandparents as both sets of his grandparents had died before he was born and Surge didn’t have any family until she met him.
“I really want things to be different for my kids.” Manic thought.
Surge shifted to get comfortable, then groaned.
“What’s wrong, Babe?” Manic asked.
“My back is killing me.” Surge replied.
Manic eased out from under Surge, then helped her turn over. He laid on his side, making sure her back was against his stomach, and held her. “Is it the bed or does it have to do with the babies?”
“I don’t know.” Surge muttered.
“I’m sorry, Babe.” Manic replied. “I wish I could help you with it. You’ve got another month.”
“Why are you still awake?” Surge asked. “I know something is on your mind.”
“Just thinking that I do want my kids to be able to spend time with their grandma.” Manic replied.
“Well, you can talk to your ma tomorrow.” Surge said. “Well, on Monday. You said this weekend was our time since it’s my birthday.”
“I know, babe.” Manic replied. “I’ll just text her to tell her that she can come by on Monday afternoon to talk.”
Manic kissed Surge. “You earned a special weekend.”
Surge fell asleep.
Manic rubbed Surge’s stomach until he fell asleep.
