Aleena showed up at the little house Manic and Surge was staying in.

Kit was gracious enough to show her inside and offer her a soda while she waited on Manic.

Aleena sat on the beanbag chair in the guest room that Manic and Surge was staying in.

Manic, wearing a T-shirt for the Mobotropolis locksmithing company, shuffled out of the little bathroom and sat down on the futon across from Aleena. “Hey, Ma.”

“Hey, how have you been?” Aleena asked.

“Pretty good.” Manic replied.

“Know what you’re gonna have yet?” Aleena asked.

“Twins.” Manic replied. “We’ll find out if they’re boys or girls on Thursday. Poor Surge is so ready to have the babies already. I feel awful for her.”

Aleena brushed her bangs out her eyes. “Where is Surge anyway?”

“Soaking in the tub.” Manic said, motioning to the bathroom door. “Her back’s bothering her.”

Aleena nodded. “I’ve been there.”

Manic got up. “Let me check on her.” He said, walking to the bathroom. He opened the door and stuck his head in. “Babe, you good?”

Aleena could hear Surge’s voice, but couldn’t make out what she said.

Manic stepped into the room and closed the door.

Several minutes later, Manic walked out with Surge, who was wearing an oversized hoodie and leggings.

Manic and Surge sat down on the futon.

Surge laid against Manic as he rubbed her swollen belly.

“Maybe I should let you two rest.” Aleena said.

“No, it’s fine.” Surge replied. “You both need to talk. Manic really needs closure so he can shut up about it already.”

“I’ve gone on tangents and annoyed her.” Manic said. “But everything annoys- nevermind. Sorry, Babe. You’ve got about another month and a half then you won’t have to do this again.”

Manic kissed Surge’s forehead.

Aleena smiled weakly. “You remind me of your dad.”

Manic sighed. “I barely remember him.”

Surge rubbed Manic’s arm since that was the only thing she could reach without moving.

Manic stroked Surge’s spines. “I really don’t know what to say, Ma.” He said. “Nothing we can do to change it. Sure, we can try to start over. I… I forgive you, Ma. I love you, it still hurts that we didn’t get to have a normal family.”

“It hurts me too, Manic.” Aleena replied. “I’m sorry. I wish I could’ve gotten this new job when you were kids or had gotten any of the other jobs I applied for back then, but it didn’t work out that way. I hated working those long hours. I am so sorry.”

“Thanks, Ma.” Manic said. “I’m… I’m glad you changed jobs. At least you’ll get to see the babies a lot, I guess.”

“So am I.” Aleena replied. “Listen, I was talking to one of my coworkers. She said it would be good for both of us to go to counseling to work through our issues. Sonia and Sonic agreed to it. Would you like to do that?”

“I’d love it.” Manic said.
