Pete finally arrives on the farm.
0Unrated
Two days after our late night call to Pete, I took all four kids out for a camp out in the far back pasture. Not the same one Pete and I got married in. Muffin came with us. I don’t think I would have been able to leave her behind. But, I was glad to have her with us. She was very helpful keeping the twins entertained. When they finally fell asleep she laid down with them.
Marvel, Saint, and I stayed up around the small campfire and talked. Marvel wanted stories so I told them some. Mostly ones about when Scott and I were young and the make believe games we played. I also made up some stories about fairies that live on the farm. She was very interested in the fairy stories.
“Mommy, you should write down the fairy stories. They would be a good book.” She told me.
“You think so?” I asked her.
She nodded and said, “You tell the best stories. You should write a kids book about them.”
I gave that some thought. She was right, it would make a good kids book. I had only ever written the books for her and Saint. And I never wanted those to be published. They were just for the kids. And I had fun writing them.
“Maybe I will write them down. That’s a good idea Marvel.”
The kids and I had fun that night. But I was ready to head back to the house in the morning. Saint and Marvel were ready to head out and play for the day. I let them. They could run and play all they wanted. They didn’t get a chance to do this at home. And I wanted them to have good memories of their time on the farm.
We had been at the farm for just over a week when I decided to have a picnic with the kids. It was the second Thursday we were there. I packed up a basket with sandwiches, chips, cut up fruit, and some other snacks. I had a couple of blankets to spread out and sit on. I had cold drinks in some thermoses. I also had a book for us to read together.
I gathered up the kids when Saint and Marvel came in for lunch.
“I have a picnic ready for us!” I told them as they came into the kitchen looking for lunch.
They both were excited about the idea. They helped me carry everything down to my favorite spot. Saint helped me spread out the blankets. Marvel helped me set all the food out. I helped the twins eat. Muffin helped me keep the twins on the blankets. I had brought a few things for Muffin too. She’s a good girl.
We had a lovely lunch, and we had fun. We stayed out there for a few hours. The twins ended up falling asleep so I let them nap out there. Marvel decided she was going to tell us a story about a fairy that lived in the woods. She has a wonderful imagination.
We had been out there for a few hours. Saint was sitting next to me with his head on my shoulder as I read to them. Once the babies woke up, Marvel played in the grass with them just off the blanket.
My head snapped up when I heard Star squeal, “Dadee!” And Jupiter quickly followed with “Dada!”
Pete was cresting the small hill that separated the house and yard from my spot. He had a huge grin on his face. The twins started running up the hill to greet him. Jupiter tripped and fell on his face, but he didn’t cry. He just got up and started running calling out for Pete.
“Dada! Dada!”
“Daddy!” Marvel yelled and started running too.
Saint stayed next to me. I looked at him, smiled and said, “Go say hi. Go on.” Only then did he get up and go to greet his father.
I stood up and waited as the kids all got their hugs and kisses from him. He had shot me a look from over Marvel's shoulder. He was coming to greet me after he was done with the kids.
“Hi guys! Oh, I’ve missed you so much!” He greeted them as he opened his arms to hug them. He hugged Jupiter, Star, and Marvel all at the same time. Saint got his own hug.
Star would not let him put her down. When he tried to, she clung to him, buried her face in his neck and cried. Once each of the children had been hugged he headed towards me. He had Star in one arm and Jupiter by the hand on his other side. Marvel and Saint were right beside him too.
“Hi! This is a wonderful surprise!” I said as he came closer.
He only flashed his grin at me. “I missed you too much. We finished recording yesterday. When we were done I went home, booked the earliest flight, packed a bag, went to the airport and here I am.” He told me. Then he put Star down and reached for me. He kissed me hard before folding me up in his arms and hugging me tight. “I have a lot to tell you. But I’ve missed you so much. I couldn’t wait any longer.” He said in my ear.
“Daddy, are you here for the rest of the summer?” Marvel asked him.
“I’m staying as long as you guys are. When you go home, I’ll be going with you.” He told her. She was thrilled to hear it. And so was Saint.
“Really Dad? You’ll be here all summer?” He asked his Dad.
“Really. I promised I would, and here I am.” He told Saint.
“You must be tired and hungry.” I said.
“I slept for most of the flight. But I am tired and hungry.”
“Let’s go up to the house and get you fed. I’m sure Amy will be happy to feed you.” I said once he had let go of me.
“She’s already working on dinner. She told me to come and get you guys.” He answered. And then he kissed me again. “Missed you so much.” He murmured into my lips.
“I missed you too. So much.” I answered. “Ok, come on everyone. Let’s take Dad back to the house and have some dinner.” I said loud enough for everyone to hear me.
With the help of Pete and the kids we gathered up all the picnic stuff and headed to the house. Star insisted that Pete hold her. She didn’t want to let go of him. Jupiter wasn’t much better. He held Pete’s hand on the walk back to the house.
When we walked into the kitchen Dad was there.
“Pete! We didn’t expect you until this weekend. Good to see you!” Dad said when he saw Pete.
“Hi John. I couldn’t stay away from Grace and the kids any longer. I missed my family.”
Dad grinned at him. “Glad you’re here.” Was all Dad said.
“They’ve been missing you too.” Amy told him with a smile.
“Well, I’m glad to be here.” He replied with a smile.
We all sat and had dinner together as a family. The kids talked a mile a minute about everything that they had done on the farm. They were so happy he was there. And he was happy too.
That evening the children wanted to spend their time with Pete. And he wanted to spend time with them. He put the twins to bed that night. And stayed up long enough to help me with Saint and Marvel.
Once all the children were in bed, we headed to our room. He wanted some alone time with me. And we needed to talk.
Before I could do more than close the door behind us, he pulled me to him and just held me. I had missed him so I just hugged him back. I rested my head on his shoulder.
“I’m so sorry. I’ve been an idiot. A huge fucking idiot.” He finally said. He pulled back from the hug and looked at me.
“What are you apologizing for?” I asked him. I wanted to be sure I understood what he was sorry for.
Pete took a deep breath, smiled and said. “Let’s get comfortable. This is going to take a while.”
“Ok.” I said and stepped back from him. “Do you want to get ready for bed?”
He nodded and hummed “Mmmhmm.”
We got ready and climbed into bed. He looked exhausted and I’m sure he was. As soon as the two of us were in bed he scooted over, wrapped his arm around me and nuzzled his face in my neck. I was sitting up against the headboard, propped up with the pillows. He was leaning against me, but still half sitting up too.
“I’ve missed you so much. You have no idea how much.” He sighed into the skin of my neck and then breathed in deeply. “You smell like Honeysuckle.” He said before kissing me lightly in the same place. It sent a shiver across my neck and shoulder. He moved his head so that his forehead rested against the skin he had just kissed. He tightened his hold on me just a little and then relaxed it again.
“We actually finished recording the day before yesterday. But we did go back to the studio yesterday morning just to be sure we didn’t need to do one last take. We realized almost right away we were good. So, Joe, Andy, and I decided to have one last try at getting Patrick to open up more about what really happened between him and Elisa.” Pete started telling me.
I had wrapped one arm around him. I ideally started to run my fingers through his hair. He always liked it when I did that. I found it relaxing too.
“Well, we found out that basically, Patrick’s going through a midlife crisis.” He let out a small chuckle at that. “But he isn’t into fast and flashy cars. He isn’t interested in a barely legal girl or boy. It was just that he was getting overwhelmed with just everything.” Pete emphasized what he said by gesturing with one arm. “And he started reminiscing about when we were young and unattached. He said he was sorry about trying to initiate something with me. He said he just needed to know. Needed to know what was really between us. Me and him.” He stopped talking for a moment. “I can understand his need to know. I think I needed to know for sure too.” He said so low it was almost a whisper.
He started talking again, telling me about how they convinced Patrick to admit that his life was better because of Elisa and the boys. And that his family should be his top priority not them or the band or the music. Then he called her and asked if he could come home. She agreed but only with conditions. Such as, they were going to couples therapy. Then she dropped a bomb on him. She’s pregnant. She didn’t know when she went back to Chicago but had found out a few weeks after. Patrick went home today.
“So, that’s two new Fall Out Babies on the way.” I said after he told me about Elisa.
“What?! Are you?” He asked a bit excitedly when I said that. He pulled back so he could see my face.
“No! Oh good God, no. I’m not. Didn’t Andy tell you?” I answered.
“Andy and Meredith? No, he didn’t say anything. How do you know?”
“She posted the announcement on her Instagram today.”
“That explains a lot. He’s been asking questions about fatherhood and babies. I should have guessed. That’s fantastic news. I’ll have to call him tomorrow.” Pete said and then cuddled back up to me.
“After Patrick called Elisa, the guys turned on me.” He told me.
“What do you mean they turned on you?” I asked him. He had his head on my shoulder again and I was running my fingers through his hair and rubbing the back of his head.
“They wanted to know why you had taken the kids and left. Wanted to know what was going on with us.” He gave a soft sigh. “I told them. I told them everything. How I had hurt you. You know I never meant to hurt you, right?”
“I know.” I answered. I did believe that. He didn’t want to hurt me, it had just happened.
“Joe called me an ass. He said he had always known I was thickheaded, but he never thought I was that obtuse. That was the word he used too, obtuse. He said that I was a goddamn fool if I didn't see you for what you are to me. That of all the relationships I’ve had in all the years I’ve known him, you are the only one he actually thought was an equal match to me.”
Pete turned his head and rested his lips against my neck again.
“Andy said that if I was incapable of seeing that you could only be my true soulmate then I was too stupid to be married to you. And he would understand if you divorced me. Even Patrick agreed that I’ve never been with anyone that was better for me.”
He started to kiss my neck and his hands started to touch me in the way only he did.
“I’m so sorry Grace. I’m sorry I was too blind to see you for what you really are, my full time soulmate, my ride or die. How can you not be?” He said into my neck.
This made me cry. Not full on ugly cry, just a surge of emotion that caused a few tears and a sniffle. Mostly in relief because that was all I really wanted to know. That I was more important to him than Patrick was. I was fine with him being a big part of Pete’s life. But I didn’t want to compete with him for Pete’s love.
“Why are you crying? Please don’t cry.” He said as he lifted his head from my shoulder to look at me.
I swallowed and said, “Happy tears. I just wanted to know you loved me as much as I love you. That you need me as much as I need you.”
“I do. Baby, I need you so much. I realized this week that I’m nothing without you. Please forgive my stupidity.”
“Forgiven.” I told him.
He only grinned at me. “Thank you.”
I moved so I could roll us over so I was on top of him. I held myself up so I didn’t put my full weight on him. Looking him in the eye I said, “I love you. I’ve missed you so much. I’m so glad you’re here.” And then I kissed him. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me down onto his chest.
“I love you so fucking much.” He told me after the kiss was over. He didn't let go of me and kept me tight on his chest. “I also realized something else this week. Being with you, calms my brain. Being with you, being around you is better than any antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication I’ve ever been on.” He smiled softly up at me. “It’s like you’re the best happy pill ever. I feel centered when we’re together. That’s definitely a soulmate thing don’t ya think?”
I grinned at that. “Absolutely a soulmate thing.”
He moved one hand and moved my hair out of my face, pushing it behind my ear. “‘You are the sun and I am just the planets Spinning around you’” He quoted himself to me.
“No.” I smiled softly at him. “I am the Moon and you are the Earth I’m just spinning around you.” I answered. “Don’t use your own words against me. You know what they mean to me.” I chided him.
He chuckled at that. “But I mean it. I do spin around you.”
I kissed him and rolled us to our sides. I threw one leg over his hips and hugged him tight. We spent the next little while becoming reacquainted with each other. It was wonderful to fall asleep with his arms around me.
