Shadow set Surge and Sonia down on the boat to take them to the mainland.

Sonic set Sally and Manic down beside Surge and Sonia.

Sonic looked over his shoulder and saw Dr. Eggman sitting on a deck chair. “Hey, Egghead, did you seriously set this up to get us killed?”

Dr. Eggman groaned. “It would’ve made this fiasco worth it.” He said. “I forgot to pay the electric bill and didn’t have the money for backup power sources yet. I was hoping to earn money for that today.”

Sonic crossed his arms. “Well, you nearly killed my brother and sister-in-law.”

“And now I may have developed a fear of velociraptors.” Manic said, flopping down on a deck chair.

The boat set sail.

Shadow leaned on the guard rail. “So about the flying and swimming ones.” He said. “Where are they, Egghead?”

“The flying ones are in the aviary.” Dr. Eggman said. “Very low-tech. Just glass, plastic, and metal. The swimming ones are in the tanks, no way to the ocean.”

“Good.” Shadow replied. “You’re not as stupid as you look.”

Dr. Eggman smiled. “Why thank- wait, was that an insult?”

Shadow narrowed his eyes at Dr. Eggman.

“Wow, that was hurtful.” Dr. Eggman said.

“Not as hurtful as being beaten to a pulp if one of your monsters had so much as scratched Sonia.” Shadow replied.

“Speaking of monsters.” Dr. Eggman said, pulling out a remote. He pressed a button on the remote.

The island exploded.

Sonic and Shadow flinched.

“Wasn’t expecting that.” Sonic said. “Okay, at least we survived.”

-three days later-

Manic, with his arm in a cast and sling, sat down across from Sonic at the coffee shop. “You want my velociraptor figure collection?” He asked. “Or my favorite shirt? I can’t look at it right now without having a panic attack.”

“Just box it up.” Sonic replied. “That way if you change your mind, it’s still there.”

Manic shrugged with his good arm. “Eh, I kinda doubt it.” He said. “They’re not so cute when they’re trying to eat you and your wife.”

“True.” Sonic replied. “Tell you what, I’ll hold on to it for you just in case.”

“Thanks, bro.” Manic said. He sipped his iced coffee.

“How’s Surge?” Sonic asked.

“She’s fine.” Manic replied. “But she’s not letting me live this down easily.”

Sonic sipped his coffee. “I kinda understand that, but you did risk your life to save her.”

“That’s what I said.” Manic muttered. “Anyway, I gotta order takeout later and rent Ballerina for her.”

“I can pick up your food for you so you can rest.” Sonic said. “It’ll save you money on your order. Just text me when you’re ready.”

“Thanks, bro.” Manic replied. “I appreciate it.”

“Just glad you and Surge are alive.” Sonic said, ruffling Manic’s spines.

Manic brushed Sonic’s hand away. “Ah, you’re messing up my spines.” He replied. “But, thanks, bro.”
