Sonic, Sally, and Tails arrived at Aleena’s home in Mobotropolis.
Sonic groaned. “Great. Princess Sonia and Prince Edgelord are here.”
“Be nice, Sonic.” Tails said.
Sonic knocked on the door.
Aleena opened the door and hugged Sonic. “Oh, I’m so glad you could make it.”
“Thanks, Mom.” Sonic said.
Aleena let Sonic go and walked him and Tails inside. “It’s great to see you too, Tails.”
“Great to see you too, Mom.” Tails said, grinning.
Tails, Sally, and Sonic hung up their coats on the coat rack.
Aleena turned her attention to Sally. “I don’t think we’ve met before.”
“Oh, Mom, this is my girlfriend Sally.” Sonic said.
“Nice to meet you.” Sally said.
Aleena furrowed her brow. “What happened to Amy?”
“I never dated her.” Sonic said. “She liked me just because I saved her from Eggman once and has stalked me ever since.”
“Oh, uh, it’s nice to meet you too, Sally.” Aleena said. “Make yourselves at home. Shadow, Surge, and Manic are watching tv in the living room and Sonia is helping me in the kitchen. We almost have the food done.”
“Thanks, Mom.” Sonic and Tails replied.
“Oh, Sally, why don’t you join me and Sonia so we can get to know each other.” Aleena said, smiling.
Sonic gave Sally a thumbs-up.
“Sure, I’d love to.” Sally replied.
Aleena and Sally headed to the kitchen while Sonic and Tails headed to the living room.
Shadow, Manic, and Surge had taken up the whole couch and had their feet on the coffee table.
Shadow motioned to the tv. “So what possessed Ross to buy leather pants?”
Manic shrugged. “I don’t know why that would be his New Year’s resolution either.”
Surge scoffed and shook her head. “I knew that was gonna happen.” She said as Sonic and Tails walked in. “I had gotten stuck in a pair of pleather leggings once in a Chili’s bathroom. I thought I’d have to call Manic in to help me.”
“Why would you go to a Chili’s?” Sonic asked.
Manic did a double take at Sonic and got up. “Oh, man, it’s been a while.” He said, hugging Sonic. “I missed you. I guess we’re cool now?”
“Yeah, it’s… it’s fine, bro.” Sonic replied. “I’m happy for you and Sonia.”
Shadow nodded while Surge smirked at Sonic.
Sonic and Tails sat on the loveseat.
“So who all is invited?” Sonic asked.
“Knux and Rouge.” Manic said. “Kit, Sticks, and psycho babe.”
“Yay.” Sonic muttered.
“I take it that the last one is Amy.” Tails replied.
Manic nodded. “I’m surprised that the pink nutjob hasn’t left a dead rabbit boiling on Sonic’s stove.”
“The heck does that mean?” Tails asked.
“It means my brother watches a lot of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and has to look up the references.” Sonic replied. “He’s never seen Fatal Attraction.”
“I don’t want to either.” Manic said. “Not exactly my genre.”
Sonic laid his arm on the arm rest. “So where’s your car, Manic?”
Manic sighed. “Blew up.”
Sonic and Tails slid to the edges of their seats.
“What?” Sonic asked.
“Well, Ma picked Surge and me up to do some shopping and see the Christmas lights in Mobodoon.” Manic replied. “When we came home, my apartment building was burning.”
“What happened?” Tails asked.
“There was a gas leak in one of the apartments.” Manic replied. “Someone lit a match or a cigarette lighter and the apartment complex blew up. My car was too close to the explosion.”
Sonic got up and hugged Manic. “Ah, man; I’m sorry, bro.”
“It’s okay, I’m just glad we’re alive.” Manic said. “We almost didn’t go with Ma. We were watching a movie and she called us because she wanted someone to go with her and you and sis were busy. I was gonna say no because we were kinda tired from a rough week, but we were bored. The explosion happened about a half hour after we left.”
“You two are lucky.” Sonic replied.
Manic nodded. “Totally.” He said. “Anyway, I’m living here temporarily.”
“Where does Surge live?” Sonic asked.
Surge bit her lip. “In a van down by the river.” She muttered. “Literally. It’s not fun, so if you make just one smart remark about it, I’m going to punch you.”
“Fine, I didn’t come here to fight.” Sonic replied.

An hour later, the guests arrive.
Amy hurried over to Sonic with her arms outstretched. “Oh, Sonic, it’s been a while. I missed you. I can’t wait to kiss you at midnight.”
Sonic pulled Sally closer to himself. “I have a girlfriend. Meet Sally.”
Amy frowned. “Uh… hi… you’re a lucky girl.” She replied. “I… I’m gonna… uh… I’ll see you around.”
Amy left the house, crying.
Sonic sighed. “I didn’t want to make her cry.”
“Someone should check on her.” Tails said.
Sticks patted Sonic on the back. “See you, I have to make tinfoil hats to protect myself from the mind control waves that the New Year’s Eve ball produces.”
Sonic and the rest of the guests gave Sticks puzzled looks.
“Sticks, it’s just a silly tradition.” Tails said.
“That’s what they want you to think.” Sticks replied.
Manic tried to stifle his laughter. “Who? You mean GUN? The Illuminati?” He asked. “Lizard people? Or is it aliens?”
Manic burst out laughing.
Sticks scoffed. “Laugh all you want, but we’ll see who’s laughing when you’re all enslaved by the evil New Year’s sphere.” She snapped. She hurried out after Amy.
Rouge shook her head. “She really needs to get some better sleep and a healthier diet.”

The hedgehog family and their guests gathered around the table for dinner.
Rouge sipped the punch. “Is this plain fruit punch?”
“Yeah, I’m sorry if that’s not what you were expecting.” Aleena said. “I had relatives that were alcoholics and it just soured me on that. Besides, Sonic and Manic can’t even handle over the counter cold medicine.”
“They get all wacky on it.” Sonia added. “It’s hilarious.”
Surge looked at Manic. “I can’t wait until the next time you get a cold.”
Manic sighed. “Thanks, Ma.” He muttered.
Sonia glanced at Shadow and nodded. “Okay, I’ve been dying to say this and now you’re all here.” She said, pulling something out of her purse. She held up a sonogram picture.
Manic’s jaw dropped. “Are you sick, Sis?”
Sonia stared dumbfounded at Manic for a moment. “No, why would you… nevermind.” She replied. “We’re having a baby girl next month.”
Aleena and Manic hugged Sonia.
Sonic sighed. “Ah, more edgelords?” He muttered under his breath.
Sally elbowed Sonic in his ribs while Shadow smacked Sonic on the back of his head.
Sonic winced.
Sonia crossed her arms. “I heard that, Sonic Hedgehog.” She replied. “That’s your little niece you’re insulting.”
“I’m sorry, sis.” Sonic said. “That… that was out of line, but you can’t tell me that you’re not thinking she’ll be this pouty, grumpy little ball of spikes.”
“Aww, that would be adorable.” Sonia gushed.
Shadow nodded.
Sonic shrugged. “So… uh… let me guess, you named her Maria?”
“How’d you know?” Sonia asked.
Sonic gave Sonia a blank stare. “Lucky guess.”
The doorbell rang.
“Oh, that must be Amy.” Sonic said, getting up. “I’ll get it.”
Sonic walked to the door and opened it. “Eggman? I knew you’d show up.”
Dr. Eggman (along with Orbot, Cubot, and Metal Sonic) walked in. “Relax, I’m not here for business.” He said. “I’m here for the chicken wings. I hear your mom makes the best wings and blue cheese sauce in Mobotropolis.”
Aleena stepped out of the dining room. “Oh, Eggman, glad you could make it.”
“You invited my enemy?!” Sonic shrieked.
“I thought you two could start the New year’s on better terms.” Aleena said. “Look, he even made a robot in honor of you. That’s flattering.”
Sonic gave Aleena a blank stare. “Yeah, it’s really flattering to have a robot version of you try to strangle you or hold you down in water.”
Aleena glared at Dr. Eggman.
“It malfunctioned, ma’am.” Dr. Eggman said nervously. “Like you said, we should make amends.”
Aleena looked at Sonic. “See?”
Dr. Eggman smirked at Sonic.
Sonic sighed. “Whatever, Mom.”

The hedgehog family and their guests gathered in the living room to wait for the countdown.
Surge banged her fist on the bathroom door. “What the heck are you doing in there, Kit?” She yelled. “Hurry it up, I have to pee.”
“I… I’m sorry, ma’am.” Kit whimpered. “The chili dogs made me sick.”
Surge groaned.
Manic grabbed Surge by her arm and dragged her over to the tv. “The countdown is starting, Babe.”
Surge sighed. “I guess I’ll wind up peeing myself anyway.” She muttered.
Everyone, except Surge, started counting down as soon as the timer on the ball drop reached the minute mark.
Surge kept glancing at the bathroom door.
At the four second mark, Kit finally came out of the bathroom.
“Oh, finally.” Surge said as she raced to the bathroom.
Manic didn’t even notice she had left.
Finally, the countdown hit zero.
Dr. Eggman and his robots, along with Kit, Tails, and Aleena cheered.
Orbot and Cubot tossed confetti while Metal Sonic fired confetti out of his cannon.
Shadow and Sonia kissed while Sonic gave Sally a quick kiss and got up, standing right where Surge was.
Manic turned and kissed Sonic.
Sonic shoved Manic hard enough to make him stumble. “What the heck, bro?!”
Manic’s eyes widened. “Oh, shoot, I thought… I didn’t realize Surge wasn’t….” He stammered. He started gagging.
Sonic shuddered.
Sally laughed.
Surge walked out of the bathroom. “What just happened?”
Manic walked over to Surge. “You could’ve told me you were in the bathroom.”
“I’m sorry.” Surge replied.
Sonic checked his watch. “Okay, Mom, I guess I’ll see you later.” He said. “Tails perfected the rings we were talking about.”
“Great job, Tails.” Aleena said. She hugged Sonic, then Sally and Tails. “Thank you so much for coming. It was great meeting you, Sally.”
“You too, Aleena.” Sally replied.
Sonic, Sally, and Tails said their goodbyes to everyone.
Tails pulled a ring out of his jacket pocket and tossed it in the air.
A portal to Tails’ house opened.
Sonic, Sally, and Tails stepped through the portal.

Sonic walked over and sat on the couch beside Tails. “Sally got home safely.”
Tails snored loudly.
“Yeah, that exhausted me too, little bro.” Sonic said. He yawned, then picked up Tails and carried him to his bed.
Sonic went over to the cot Tails had set up for guests and laid down. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
