Did you ever have a wish that you wanted to make come true, but couldn't because it didn't make sense.
I had one silly wish.
My wish was to somehow end up in my favorite anime or cartoon and go on a adventure with the main cast.
Why would I wish for something like that, you may ask? Well, the truth was I was experiencing loneliness. I didn't have any friends that I kept from my childhood and that wasn't the case as a young adult either.
I was scared of being rejected by others if they learned I had autism. My brain worked differently than everyone else. It wasn't as severe as ones I saw on videos posted to social media, but I still had difficulties.
That made me insecure, especially regarding my painful past. I would stay in my bedroom in my family home and watch cartoon and anime on my laptop, imagining I was with the main cast helping them out any way I could.
My favorite anime was Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. I had watched Duel Monsters and GX, but 5D's was my favorite because it had more action and a plot that was darker than the first two series, but not scary enough to frighten me. It was entertaining and exciting. And to be honest, I acquired a small crush on the main protagonist, Yusei Fudo. He was a calm young man, intelligent, the quiet type, serious, but cared a lot for his friends. He was my ideal man.
As you can probably guess, I never had a boyfriend even though I was 22 years old. It didn't hurt me as much as a typical young woman, if she didn't have a partner for a while, since I knew I wasn't ready to be in a relationship. That was why I wrote fanfics about certain male cartoon characters I had a crush on and paired them with original characters that I made up. That was mental preparation for me to later face the real world when the time came for me to have a boyfriend.
But everything changed one particular day when I went to a small game store in my hometown to play Yu-Gi-Oh.
My name is Estelle Malmstrom and this is the story of a unforgettable adventure that changed my life forever.

I was going through my Yu-Gi-Oh deck at my desk one last time after I finished modifying it. I was already dressed to head out to a small tournament in my home town in a game store that I went to once a week to play card games. I didn't have any close friends there, but I had acquaintances I got to know since I started playing last year. The main card game often played there was Magic the Gathering, but they sometimes arranged Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments and I wanted to take that opportunity to try out my deck. I wasn't a professional, since I mostly collected cards, but I could still last ten turns.
I felt satisfied with my dragon/warrior/spellcaster deck and put it in a metal box that contained a paper game mat that usually came with Starter decks. My favorite Duel Monsters were dragons, warriors and spellcasters. I had always loved dragons, even from different franchises. I found them to be mysterious, powerful and beautiful.
My ace Duel Monster was a Synchro monster that I fell in love with at first sight, literally, when I got to know about it's existence. That Synchro monster was a dragon known as Star Eater. So far, Star Eater was only one of two level 11 Synchro monsters in existence, so it was unique. I spent more than two years looking for the card, buying booster packs of the set Star Eater was in, until I got it one day. I cheered out loud in joy and kinda embarrassed myself in front of a lot of people, but I didn't care. I got my destined dragon Synchro monster. Star Eater was added to my extra deck as often as possible, depending on how I structured it. I mainly used Synchro monsters in my decks. I would sometimes add XYZ monsters, but not Pendulum or Link monsters. Those were too complicated for me to use.
I put the metal box in my dark red satchel before zipping it closed, and stepped out into the hallway. I took a quick peek at myself in the mirror. My thick half-wavy chestnut brown hair was combed and reached down to my waist. My blue eyes blinked behind my oval shaped navy blue glasses, matching my very pale skin. My outfit consisted of a black top with long sleeves that hugged my slim figure, a red jacket with short sleeves, jeans and white socks. I sat down on a small bench and put on a pair of black long length boots that almost reached my knees. Once I put the boots on, I walked out of the house and locked the door behind me.
The weather was nice and warm for a May day. I took a deep breath as I walked towards the bus stop. Everything seemed to be normal like usual. So imagine my surprise when I heard a rumble in the distance. I stopped in my tracks and glanced up at the sky once again.
I almost flinched in shock when I saw thick and black clouds quickly covering the entire sky. Where the heck did they come from? The weather report never mentioned rain or thunder. And how in the world did the clear sky turn into this natural disaster-like monstrosity so fast? The sun was shining less then a minute ago.
Thunder started cracking among the clouds, and the air was full of static that made the hair on my body stand up. I started cold sweating when I realized a really bad storm was on the way, so I turned on my heels and quickly walked back to the house.
I was less then 100 meters away from the house when a lightning bolt struck the ground not far away from me. I jumped up in shock and cried out in fear before crouching down and covering my ringing ears. The lightning bolt sounded like over a thousand drums in a orchestra.
Once the ringing in my eardrums stopped, I let out a sigh of relief and straightened up to walk away. It was then that the wind started to pick up, causing my hair to fly around everywhere. I tried brushing it aside to see, but it was constantly in my face. I threw a glance upwards and noticed something odd.
The lightning among the clouds looked like it was crimson, not white. What did that mean? I had never heard of thunder being red. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong, and it scared me.
"It is you."
I snapped my eyes open and looked around, trying to see if there was someone right next to me. I didn't see anyone nearby, It was like I was in a video game world and I would soon face the final boss. That was the feeling I had, and the game I could relate to was "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild".
The next thing I knew, lightning struck the ground around me and produced a bright light that forced me to shield my eyes while my head felt like it was going to explode due to the deafening noise that sounded like the cry of a dragon.
After that, everything became black.
XXXXXXXXXX - Normal POV
Rain was pouring down on the dirty Satellite. Two male residents of the island, Blitz and Rally Dawson, ran through the rain, hurrying to a underground base. Rally was around eleven years old and had thick curly reddish hair, dark grey eyes and peach skin, and because of his looks he was often mistaken as a girl. Blitz was in his early twenties. He was tall with slightly tanned skin, dark grey eyes and sandy brown hair that was covered by a blue bandana.
The two ran past a alley way when Rally suddenly stopped in his tracks. He swore that he saw something odd in the alleyway. He ran back to get a closer look. Blitz then noticed that Rally was no longer behind him and looked over his shoulder, seeing that the boy was looking in the alleyway.
"Rally! What're you doing?" Blitz called out, irritably. "We need to seek shelter from the rain!"
"There's someone in here, Blitz! I think they're hurt!" Rally shouted before running into the alleyway.
Blitz rolled his eyes with a groan and ran after the young boy. When he entered the alleyway, he saw Rally kneeling next to a feminine figure lying on it's stomach. When Rally rolled the body over on it's back, the two quickly realized it was a young woman. She was still breathing, so she had only lost consciousness. She was wearing glasses and had a dark red satchel strapped to her. At first glance, she looked fine.
"We need to help her." Rally concluded.
"What? Rally, we can't bring a girl to Yusei's place!" Blitz argued. "We don't even know who she is!"
"But we can't leave her out here in the rain!" Rally shot back. "And what if she's really hurt and needs help?"
Blitz grunted inwardly before he shrugged his shoulders and squatted down. He took the satchel off the unconscious woman and placed it on the ground before placing her on his back, holding onto her legs while he made sure her arms rested on his shoulders.
"You take her bag." Blitz told the small boy before walking out of the alleyway.
Initially, Rally was a bit surprised that Blitz listened to him, but he was still happy to know the young man wouldn't leave a woman out in the cold. He picked the red satchel up and ran after Blitz as the rain started pouring down a bit harder.
XXXXXXXXXX - Yusei's POV
I was checking the data on my Duel Runner, trying to remove a few glitches that I discovered after taking it out on a test drive. While doing that, I heard the rain clattering against the asphalt that echoed from the crevasse in the ceiling of the abandoned subway where I lived. I liked listening to the rain whenever I was working. It was nice hearing that after a day of work in the recycling center. It was relaxing listening to Mother Nature.
Elsewhere in the tunnel, a friend of mine was throwing a shield and hammer to test his accuracy.
"Hey, Yusei! Have Blitz and Rally come back yet?" Nervin asked from my hut.
"No, not yet." I shook my head, my eyes never leaving the laptop.
"Don't worry, Nervin. I'm sure they're not in danger." Tank said from the hut as I heard him munching on something.
"But they should have been back a half hour ago. Rally's got his criminal mark, so Sector Security can easily track him down." Nervin said, worried.
"Don't be so paranoid, Nerve." Tank replied calmly. "Maybe they sought shelter from the rain and are safe and sound."
"And you need to stop eating everything in the fridge!" Nervin shouted.
"But I'm craving French fries! If I can't eat potatoes, I'll eat a apple instead! I'm not invading Yus' fridge!"
I couldn't help but hold back a chuckle while I listened to those two back and forth. They kinda reminded me of when Crow, Jack and I were little kids and how my two foster brothers used to fight over almost every single thing. I always tried to be the peacemaker, but in the end Martha was the only one who could put them in their place.
My thoughts became sour when I thought about Jack's betrayal. How could he do those things two years ago and steal not only my first Duel Runner, but my best card.
"Guys!" Rally's voice was heard from the stairs leading down into the subway.
"There you are!" Nervin exclaimed, relieved. "Where've you guys been?"
I looked up from my laptop when I heard both Tank and Nervin gasp in surprise. Blitz was carrying someone on his back as he and Rally approached the hut. I stood up from the crate I sat on and walked over to the hut as Blitz slowly and carefully put the body down on my couch. My right eyebrow was raised slightly in surprise when I saw who he and Rally had found.
"Who's this?" Someone with raven hair asked after joining us upon finishing his accuracy test.
"That's what we want to know, Ash."
Ash tightly gripped a metal hammer in his right hand. Three ancient presences could be felt as well. They were the three Legendary God Cards. He had stumbled upon them one day after traversing the outskirts of New Domino City.
"What compelled you to bring her here." He calmly questioned the two. "You know what, never mind."
He didn't need them to answer that question.
"I'd prefer you and Blitz finding her over someone else in the Satellite. A lot of this island's residents don't have the best intentions in mind when it comes to women." That was something Ash knew all too well due to his time with the Enforcers.
"We can interrogate her when she wakes up." Blitz suggested. "But we should check to see if she does have a injury somewhere, especially on her head. If she has a concussion, she might need medical treatment."
"Right." I nodded as I approached the couch and knelled down next to it.
While I gently moved the young woman's head to check for any wounds, Rally got a first aid kit. I was only able to find a bump on her head, so she might have a concussion.
"What's with this bag?" Tank asked.
I looked over my shoulder and saw that Tank was looking at the satchel on the coffee table.
"She had it on her, so it could belong to her." Blitz replied.
"Maybe we can find a ID and verify her identity..." Tank suggested before he picked it up.
"Are you out of your mind?!" Nervin panicked before ripping the satchel out of Tank's hands. "We can't just peek through a girl's stuff! They are very private."
Ash held a hand up to silence them.
"Let's just wait for her to wake up and present a ID." He advised.
The others liked his idea. It was more appropriate after all.
A weak groan then got our attention. I looked back at her and saw that her eyelids were slowly moving. I removed my hand from the back of her head and stepped back to give her some space.
"Guys, she's waking up." I told my friends.
XXXXXXXXXX - Estelle's POV
It was black and cold around me. Was this what everyone saw on their way to Heaven? But why did it feel like I was still alive? Didn't I get struck by lightning and burned to a crisp? Had I just imagined things?
No.
I clearly remembered the bombarding noise of the lightning that still lingered in my ears, and the bright light that almost blinded me.
Speaking of which, I heard foreign yet familiar voices talking around me in the darkness. Who were they? I needed to see who they were, so I could give the voices a face. I wanted to know why they sounded so concerned. I tried to regain control of my body before I was finally able to open my heavy eyelids.
The first thing I saw was a wooden ceiling. There was a light to my left as I slowly sat up. The voices stopped as I rubbed my eyes to open them wider. Even so, I wasn't able to see properly without my glasses.
I felt the furniture around me to find my glasses before feeling someone grab my left hand and put something in it.
"Here, if you're looking for these." A young voice said.
"Thank you." I replied, recognizing the shape of my glasses in my hand before putting them on my body, only to freeze.
Why was my response in English? Well, it's because the voice next to me was American, but I lived in Sweden. Was it a foreign tourist who had found me and stayed behind to revive me after being struck by lightning.
I slowly turned to the left and saw six faces. I blinked my eyes several times to confirm I wasn't hallucinating. I then looked around and realized I was in a shabby hut.
"Hey."
I turned my head back to the young men as the one who looked just like Yusei from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's walked over to the couch I sat on and knelled down until he was at my eye level. I couldn't help but feel my cheeks warm up a little from being close to my fictional crush.
"Are you okay?" Yusei asked me. "I felt a bump on the back of your head, so I wanted to make sure you didn't have a concussion."
"I...I'm fine, I think." I replied carefully as I rubbed the back of my head, feeling the bump he just mentioned a few seconds ago.
"Do you know what happened?" Yusei continued.
I do recall that, but...my thoughts were all over the place. Could it be that I was in the fictional dimension of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's? Like in those fanfics I often wrote on my laptop.
No, that's impossible! It would be too cliche.
"Maybe she does have a concussion." The young man that looked like Tank said in the background.
"No. I'm just a little...disoriented." I admitted as I moved my legs and sat on the edge of the couch.
The little boy that seemed to be Rally walked over to the couch and sat down next to me. "I'm Rally. Rally Dawson. Blitz and I found you in a alleyway, unconscious and I didn't want to leave you there. What's your name?"
Rally looked like he was very curious. When I looked at the rest of the group, I saw that they were curious and cautious. If this really was the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's dimension, then I must have appeared around the beginning of the anime. I could confirm that because Yusei didn't have a criminal marker on his left cheek.
Since I knew how the anime would turn out, I had to keep a low profile and reveal very little information about myself.
"My name is Estelle." I introduced myself with a smile.
"Well Estelle, are you part of Sector Security or not?" The man who looked like Blitz questioned me right away.
"Sector Security? What's that?" I acted like I had no idea what he was talking about.
"Uh oh. She might have amnesia." Tank remarked.
"Or it's a act for her to gain our trust and then stab us in the back!" The last man who was certainly Nervin threw his hands up in the air.
"Ignore him." Ash instructed. He wasn't entirely convinced Estelle had amnesia and instead chose to keep something secret. What that was would eventually come to light.
I decided not to tell them the truth yet; that I came from a world where their world was fictional. Instead, I decided to play dumb. "I can't remember."
"So you have no idea how you ended up in that alleyway?" Blitz asked me.
"No." I shook my head before standing up and grabbing my satchel. "I appreciate you looking after me, but I should go."
I couldn't stay with Yusei's group. Most of them were suspicious, especially Nervin and Blitz. I couldn't blame them. I was a stranger that was keeping up a act to maintain a low profile. I didn't want them to assume I was a spy for Sector Security. I was willing to leave the underground base to keep Yusei and his friends safe.
"You're better off staying with us for the time being." Ash told me as I stopped by the threshold of the hut. "A lot of the Satellite's residents are rough customers."
"Yeah, and don't forget the curfews." Tank added. "If Sector Security catches you, you'll be sent to the Facility in New Domino City and be marked, even if you're a girl."
I couldn't help but chuckle when they kept calling me "girl". Many autistic people looked a lot younger than they were due to their facial features. I've seen people that are autistic who are over 40 years old, but they look like they are only 25 or 30, in addition to their slightly immature behavior, because a human with autism matures much slower than a "normal" human being.
"I can take care of myself." I told them as I looked over my shoulder. "After all, I'm twenty two years old."
"Twenty two?!" Tank, Nervin and Blitz exclaimed in disbelief.
"You don't look like it." Nervin told me.
I forgot to mention something before; I was taller than most women from Sweden. I was around 180 cm tall, and I had always been the tallest student at my old schools.
"I get that a lot." I smiled softly before walking out of the hut.
I was aware of the danger in a unfamiliar city, but the Satellite was definitely dangerous. I didn't know any self defense, so I was a easy target for people with bad intentions. I could try to convince the boys to let me stay with them, but that would be inappropriate, since I was a stranger and I didn't want to be a spoiled brat who wanted the world to revolve around me. I had to adapt to these new circumstances. I had to survive on my own.
XXXXXXXXXX - Normal POV
We watched Estelle leave Yusei's hut quietly after she told us how old she was. She was around their age and was a year old than Blitz. Still, that really didn't matter. Estelle was a woman who looked too frail and weak to fight back against molesters and Sector Security.
"Should we really let her go?" Tank asked, getting everyone's attention. "I don't think she's a bad person."
"She left of her own volition, Tank." Ash told him. "There's very little we can do about it."
Since she was a legal adult, they couldn't force her to stay with them.
Ash then turned to Yusei.
"What do you suggest we do, Yusei?" He asked him, hoping to get his opinion.
Blitz, Nervin, Rally and Tank also looked at him.
"I don't think she intends to cause us any harm." Yusei concluded. "She can stay here until she recovers her memories."
XXXXXXXXXX - Estelle's POV
I had almost reached the stairs leading out of the abandoned subway and up to the stairs when I heard someone walking towards me. I turned around and saw Ash with Yusei and the others following him.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"How would you like to stay with us?" He offered.
"Pardon?" I blinked in surprise.
"You can stay here until you recover your memories." Yusei explained as he approached me. "Personally, I don't consider you to be a bad person. Any maybe, we can help you figure out what happened to you."
I was a bit stunned by the offer. I thought Yusei was cautious with strangers, but maybe he could sense I wasn't the kind of person who wanted to use others and betray them.
"Are you sure?" I asked just to be certain. "I don't want you to feel pressured to do this."
"Yusei made the final decision." Ash informed me. "Take it or leave it."'
I stared at them before ultimately making up my mind. "Thank you."
I had one silly wish.
My wish was to somehow end up in my favorite anime or cartoon and go on a adventure with the main cast.
