Sonia, Bunnie, and Mindy sat in Sonia’s room, painting each other’s nails.
Sally was there as well, ordering pizza for everyone on Nicole, the tablet Tails had made her.
“I thought your mama was gonna hang out with us, Sonia.” Bunnie said, painting Sonia’s nails a dark purple.
“She said she’d be home as soon as Manic’s dentist appointment was done.” Sonia replied. “He’s getting one of his back teeth pulled, so maybe it won’t be too long.”
“It is a sleepover anyway.” Mindy said, looking through Sonia’s nail polish box.
Sally set her tablet down. “Well, pizza’s been ordered and apparently there was a wreck on the highway.” She replied. “So your mom and Manic might be late.”
“At least they’ll be home safely.” Sonia said.
Sonia’s phone started ringing.
“Put it on speaker, Mindy.” Sonia said.
Mindy answered the phone.
“Sonia, call Sonic.” Manic cried. “Wreck. Ma’s hurt.”
Bunnie flinched, painting a midnight purple streak across Sonia’s hand.
Sally and Mindy moved closer to the phone.
“What happened?” Sonia asked. “Manic-”
“Gotta go.” Manic said as sirens wailed in the distance. “Ma, wake-”
The call ended.
Sonia hyperventilated. “She’ll be okay. Manic’s okay.” She said, picking her phone up to call Sonic.
Sonic finally picked up, most likely using his watch to answer the call and his headset to talk. “In the middle of something.”
“Mother and Manic was in a wreck.” Sonia sobbed.
“What? Let me finish up, then I’ll check on them.” Sonic said. “Shadow, end this, I-”
The call ended as Sonic spin dashed a robot.
Sonia continued hyperventilating, not even noticing the knock on the door.
Sally got up to answer the door,
Mindy and Bunnie sat with Sonia.
Mindy wrapped Sonia’s pink fleece blanket around her. “Just breathe, Sonia. I’m sure they’re okay.”
Sonic called Sonia again.
Sonia answered the phone and put it on speaker. “What’s going on?”
“The police won’t let me cross the crime tape and no one’s telling me anything.” Sonic said. “I’m on the sidewalk. Oh, man, Mom’s car is obliterated. They have a body covered with a sheet; it doesn’t look like it’s Manic. Oh, there’s Manic. Manic!”
Sonia breathed a shaky sigh of relief.
“The officer is gonna let me talk to him.” Sonic said. “I’ll call you back.”
The call ended.
Sonia exhaled slowly. “Okay, he’s safe. I’m sure Mother is safe too.”
Sally walked in. “Has Sonic called?”
“He said Manic was okay.” Sonia replied. “They’re talking to the officer.”
A few minutes later, Sonic called again.
Sonia answered the phone. “Is Mother okay?”
“No, sis.” Sonic said, voice shaking. “She’s gone. The impact killed her instantly. I’m sorry I didn’t call sooner, I was calling Unc because he’s the one Mom has signed up to handle her arrangements.”
Sonia started sobbing hysterically.
“We’ll be home soon.” Sonic said. He hung up.
Sonia dropped the phone and curled up slightly as she cried into her hands.
Mindy hugged Sonia. “I’m so sorry.”
