Manic and Sonic walked around the duplex they were planning on renting.

The two walked into the second bedroom

Manic noticed the door leading to the second bathroom. “Two bathrooms?” He asked. “Sweet. I could get used to this.”

“Rent’s good.” Sonic replied. “It’ll do for now.”

“I’ll tell the guy we’ll take it.” Manic said, walking to the door.

Sonic checked his phone. “Sweet, we have our first gig!”

Manic ran back in. “Did you say we have a gig?”

Sonic grinned. “Yeah, bro.” He said. He hugged Manic.

Manic pulled away. “Okay, we can celebrate after I tell the guy we’ll take the place.”

~two weeks later~

Sonic walked into his and Manic’s place after a long day of battling Eggman. He flipped through the mail, including a flyer for the new pizza place down the road.

“I wasn’t doing well in math, Ma.” Manic said.

Sonic set the mail in the organizer and walked into the living room.

Manic was laying on the couch, talking on the phone. “I was gonna flunk out anyway.” He said, waving at Sonic. “Might as well quit.”

Sonic nodded once, then sat down on the couch at Manic’s feet.

“Yes, I have a fall back and it’s not being a cashier at Hot Topic.” Manic said. “I’m working as a locksmith. I was gonna be a tattoo artist, but there isn’t a shop around here and I don’t want to deal with someone who flinches and blames me for messing up or something. Happened to the guy who does mine.”

Sonic glanced at Manic.

Manic half smiled. “Thanks, Ma.” He said. “I’ll talk to you later. Sonic’s home and we have to figure out what we want for dinner.”

“Hey, Mom.” Sonic said.

“She said hey, bro.” Manic replied. “Alright, bye, Ma. We love you.”

Manic hung up and sighed. “She was wanting to know how I was doing in college.” He said. “I got a lecture that the band and my art isn’t a good fall back on and I need to have a good job to provide for my family.”

“Well, yeah, but you don’t have a family.” Sonic replied.

“She bumped into Surge at the pharmacy.” Manic said. “You know how we all had the stomach bug? Ma didn’t know we and Sally had it and assumed Surge was pregnant.”

Sonic laughed. “How long did it take to get a word in?”

“Twenty minutes, I timed it because I was bored.” Manic said, sitting up. “Anyway, she also called to tell us about uncle Chuck’s birthday dinner on Saturday at two.”

“Great.” Sonic replied. “Okay, for dinner, we have coupons for the new pizza place down the road.”

“Sounds good.” Manic said, getting up. He walked to the laundry room. “Check the menu and tell me what they have in calzones or strombolis.”

Sonic pulled his phone out and went to get the coupons. “So how’s the search for a social media manager going?”

Manic walked out of the laundry room with a basket. “Kit will handle that and book our gigs.” He said. “Oh, Uncle Chuck said he made us a recording studio in his basement. We can go there to practice.”

“Awesome.” Sonic replied. “Sally said she’s happy to help you with cover art and posters.”

“I’d appreciate it.” Manic said. “I’m overwhelmed with work. Surge is helping me, but she could use the help too.”

Sonic snorted as he caught the faint scent of pot coming from the other side of the duplex. “Ugh, didn’t you report the neighbors?”

“Not yet.” Manic replied. “Remind me to do that tomorrow. They’ve been driving me crazy all day.”

Sonic tapped in the order. “You mean they’ve been smoking pot all day and you didn’t report it?”

“No, but they’ve been watching tv, talking with friends, and farting.” Manic replied. “I could barely work on the cover art and a comic I made until I put on my headphones.

Sonic sighed. “I would say we should go out to eat, but I’m too tired.” He said. “Okay, they have your favorite calzone type. You want that?”

“Sure.” Manic replied.

~Two days later~

Manic walked in the door with bags of groceries.

Sonic walked through the kitchen while on his phone, completely oblivious to Manic. “What do you mean she’s on her honeymoon?” He asked. “She never invited us to the wedding. We would’ve gone to it.”

Manic rolled his eyes as he set the bags on the counter.

“Eh, I’m not surprised.” Sonic said, walking toward the living room. “Bye, Mom; love you. See you later.”

Sonic walked into the kitchen.

“Sonia and Shadow got married?” Manic asked.

Sonic helped Manic with the groceries. “Yeah.”

“Shadow was my best friend, I set him up with Sonia.” Manic said, leaning against the counter. “The least he could do was invite me or make me his best man.”

“Mom said it was a small one.” Sonic replied. “The only guests were her and Gerald. Oh, and a picture of Maria.”

“Still.” Manic muttered.

“You can go to mine and Sal’s wedding.” Sonic said, patting Manic on the back.

“Thanks, bro.” Manic replied. “You can come to mine and Surge’s wedding too.”

Sonic set aside the hot dog buns and can of chili. “So what was the idea you were gonna tell me about?”

“I was thinking we could do a podcast together.” Manic said. “It might make us a little extra money between gigs.”

Sonic set out the hot dog weiners. “What would we talk about?”

“Music, my comic.” Manic said, gathering the empty bags. “Whatever random stuff we think of. It’ll be fun. I already came up with a theme song.”

“Okay.” Sonic replied. “Sounds fun.”
