Shadow stepped into the little coffee shop in downtown Mobodoon and immediately knew something was wrong. “Why is it empty?”
A hologram of Sonia appeared as the doors locked on their own. Red gas began to fill the room.
“I’m sorry, Shadow.” Sonia said, voice breaking. “I love you. I want you to get help.”
Shadow coughed. His vision began to blur. “How… how could you….”
“I’m sorry.” Sonia said softly. “I never wanted it to come to this, my love.”
Shadow collapsed to the floor in a heap, his vision fuzzy and black around the edges. He pressed the emergency button on his watch to let Manic and the others know he was caught and to get their escape plans ready.
Then everything turned black.

-Meanwhile On Earth-
Twelve year old Maria sat on her bed, listening to classical music as she drew a picture of Tom and Maddie’s dog Ozzy as a gift for looking out for her while her grandfather Gerald went to a scientific convention in New York two months ago.
Gerald poked his head into the doorway since Maria left the door open. “Maria, it’s dinner time.”
“Oh… I’m not hungry, Grandfather.” Maria said, setting her drawing aside. “But thank you.”
Gerald came into the room with a plate of chicken quesadillas. “You need to try to eat.” He said, setting the plate on the nightstand. He sat down on the computer chair. “That’s a lovely portrait.”
“I’m glad you like it.” Maria replied. “The kids in town called it ugly.”
“I’m sorry.” Gerald said, sitting down beside Maria. “I’ve been thinking that maybe we should pick out a pet. Someone to keep you company.”
Maria smiled weakly. “Really?”
“Of course.” Gerald replied.
“Can I get a hedgehog?” Maria asked. “Please?”
“Do some research and see if you can own one here and what you’ll need.” Gerald replied. “Then, we’ll go from there.”
Maria hugged Gerald. “Thank you, grandfather.”
“You’re welcome.” Gerald said, patting Maria on the back.
The phone rang.
Gerald got up and headed to the living room. “Who could it be at this hour?”
Maria smiled at the thought of getting her dream pet, then she realized she didn’t have friends to hang out with and play with her pet like she used to do when she had friends before she got sick. “It would be nice to have at least one friend and a hedgehog.” She said softly. She closed her eyes and silently prayed for a friend, then quietly ate her meal.
