Shadow was in the back of the police van, heading to the Mobotropolis courthouse in shackles.
The plan was for Manic and the others to create a distraction, get Shadow free, and use a ring to escape to another planet.
It should go smoothly. Well, Shadow believed it would go smoothly as long as he escaped. He wouldn’t need Manic or the others on Earth, so he didn’t care about them.
The van stopped.
Shadow quickly yanked a spine out of his head and started picking the lock.
The shackles fell off as the doors started opening.
A ring portal opened behind Argus and the other guards.
Manic and the team stepped through the portal behind Argus and started fighting the guards.
Shadow rushed over and punched Argus.
Manic tossed Shadow a ring. “Shads!”
Shadow caught the ring, used it to open a portal to Earth and stepped through it, but not before swiping the bag of rings off of Manic’s belt.
Manic reached for his bag of rings. “That lowdown-”
A guard tackled Manic and handcuffed him.
Surge weakly gave up.
Rouge and Kit exchanged glances, then gave up as well.

Aleena walked into the interrogation room and gasped softly at her son Manic, who she hadn’t seen since he was fifteen years old.
Manic, handcuffed and shackled, sat at one end of the table in the interrogation room. He glared defiantly at nothing in particular.
He was now twenty-two. His fur was scruffier and his long, dyed black tipped spines were a mess, with a few of them hanging in his face. Piercings in his ears and nose as well as his eyebrows and lips. He wore a black t-shirt with the sleeves ripped off and black combat boots. The look of pure anger, hatred, and defiance in his eyes was unsettling.
Aleena sat down and looked at Argus. “Remove his hand cuffs.”
“Are you sure, your highness?” Argus asked.
“Yes.” Aleena replied.
Argus undid Manic’s handcuffs.
Manic moved his hands to the table and rubbed his wrists. “Good thing I had my gloves to cushion it.” He muttered. “Is this necessary, Ma?”
“Unfortunately, since you decided to join a gang.” Aleena replied.
“Who’s fault is that?” Manic sneered. “Didn’t see anyone from the royal court breaking their necks to save us.”
“We tried to find you and everyone else.” Aleena replied. “You know that.”
“Not hard enough.” Manic said. “Fifteen years we were trapped there. Tortured until we finally escaped on our own and what do you do with the guy who did it?”
Aleena sighed. “Manic.”
“You just lock him up in the hopes of rehabbing a degenerate.” Manic said. “If it was me, he would’ve gotten the death penalty.”
“So we could be like him?” Aleena asked. “Do you think that would change what happened?”
Manic shrugged. “Would make me feel better.”
Aleena slowly shook her head. “That’s not you; you’ve let Shadow warp you.”
“Like you really know me.” Manic muttered.
“Your siblings said the same thing.” Aleena replied. “They’ve been with you for most of your lives. They should have a well informed opinion of you.”
“So you caught me.” Manic said. He scoffed. “Big deal. You’ll let me go because I’m your baby and you don’t want to lock me up, ‘cause you feel sorry for me about what happened.”
“You’re my baby and I’ll love you no matter what.” Aleena replied. “But it doesn’t mean I believe you shouldn’t face any sort of consequences for your actions. I want you to get help.”
Manic drummed his fingers on the table. “Is that all you dragged me in here for?”
“No, I’m here to inform you that you’re looking at a life sentence with no parole.” Aleena said.
Manic stopped drumming. There was a faint flicker of surprise in his eyes, but he kept the same deadpan stare.
“That’s an awfully long time and a waste of your youth to be in a max security prison.” Aleena continued.
“Well, my childhood was stolen, so I’m used to it.” Manic replied. “Robotnik’s lab was like being sent to hell. Anything else is a downgrade.”
Aleena pulled a file out of her purse. “You know we arrested Surge” She said, opening the file. “You love each other, right?”
“Right, and I’m not turning on her.” Manic replied.
“Didn’t ask you or her to.” Aleena said. “You know she wasn’t feeling well when we arrested you all. Found out why.”
Manic raised an eyebrow.
“She’s almost two weeks pregnant.” Aleena said. “She didn’t know until she was tested at the prison. I’m sure you didn’t know that either. I don’t expect you to take my word for it, so here’s the files.”
She slid the files to Manic.
Manic read the files and sighed. “I can’t believe this.”
“So with that in mind, I’m offering you a deal.” Aleena said. “That deal extends to Surge as well. I know you don’t want to be separated from them for the rest of your life or for your baby to be in foster care until your siblings or I can get custody.”
“I’m listening.” Manic replied.
“You help us track down and bust Shadow in exchange for yours and Surge’s freedom.” Aleena said. “You’ll both spend a few months in a counseling center to help with your trauma and do some community service, but you’ll be free. I’ll have your charges expunged from your records; hers too.”
Manic smirked. “Deal.”
Aleena smiled. “Great, let’s get started.”
