Shadow slowly woke up in a white room with a bright light over head. He groaned and squinted in the light. “I didn’t think I was good enough to make it to heaven.” He muttered.
“You’re still alive, Shadow.” Maddie said, leaning into Shadow’s face. “Sonic got you here in time.”
Shadow slowly sat up. “Great, he’ll never let me live this down.” He muttered.
“You got that right.” Sonic said, hopping off the chair he was sitting on.
Shadow sighed.
“Someone’s looking out for you, Shadow.” Maddie said, giving him a cup of water. “Those shards narrowly missed arteries. One jagged piece got caught in an odd angle in your head spines. If it hadn’t, it would’ve impaled you.”
Maddie pulled Sonic closer and motioned to the center of the back of Sonic’s head. “Right in there. That would’ve been fatal.”
“It was about a foot long piece.” Sonic added.
“Thanks, Maddie.” Shadow said.
Tails walked in. “Sonia and Maria want to know if they can come in yet.”
Maddie nodded. “Call them in.”
Sonic walked out the open door.
Tails looked at Shadow. “I’m going to get Maria her treatments, don’t worry.”
Shadow slid his legs off of the table. “Good.”
Sonia and Maria rushed in and hugged Shadow.
“I’m so glad you’re alive.” Sonia said.
“Me too.” Shadow replied.
Maria sat down beside Shadow. “Thanks for saving us.”
“You’re welcome.” Shadow replied.
“I’ll let you three talk.” Maddie said. She left the room with Sonic and Tails.
“Sonia explained everything, why you’re here.” Maria said.
Shadow dipped his chin to his chest.
“It’s okay.” Maria said, smiling weakly. “I forgive you.”
“What?” Shadow asked.
“I forgive you.” Maria replied.
Shadow looked at Maria. “I… I really don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything.” Maria said.
Shadow sighed. “I used you and Gerald to have a place to stay and told you I was younger than what I really am.”
Maria nodded. “But we did get to be friends, right?” She asked. “It was you that threatened some of my classmates, wasn’t it?”
“You knew about that?” Shadow asked.
“No, you just admitted it.” Maria said, smirking.
Shadow chuckled.
“It’s sweet of you to defend me, but don’t do that again.” Maria said, brushing down stray spines on Shadow’s head.
“Anyway, yeah, we did.” Shadow replied. “The past month or so has been the closest thing to family that I’ve ever had aside from Sonia.”
“That’s sweet, Shadow.” Sonia said, slipping her hand into Shadow’s hand. “This change of heart may help your case, but you still have to serve two years. The blast from your last heist killed one of the guards.”
“What?” Shadow and Maria asked.
“The blast was only supposed to cause a distraction and stun them.” Shadow said. “I thought I was far enough away to keep it from being fatal.”
“Manic said it wasn’t intentional.” Sonia replied.
Maddie stepped in. “Uhm, Maria?” She asked. “Tom called. He said they picked up Gerald and he’ll make arrangements. We’ll stay at your house tonight and help you with your… uh… friends, okay?”
Maria nodded. “Thanks, Maddie.”
Maddie stepped over. “Let me help you up.” She said, helping Shadow. “There you go, buddy. C’mon, we’ll get you your pain meds and we’ll go back to the house.”
Maddie helped Shadow into the computer chair by the desk and wheeled him out.
Sonia, Tails, and Maria followed Maddie out.

Maddie helped Shadow into the Robotnik family home.
Sonia and Maria followed them.
Sonic and Tails made it there before Maddie drove the other three home.
Maddie helped Shadow lay down on the couch. “There, just take it easy.” She said, pulling a blanket over Shadow. “We’ll get you some food.”
Manic, holding Glitch, walked in. “Ah, good to see you’re alive.”
“I’m sorry about everything.” Shadow said.
Manic flinched. “Huh. I’m either hallucinating or hell really has frozen over.”
“For what, Shads?” Rouge asked. “For the whole sorry mess you got us into?”
Shadow nodded.
“I forgive you.” Manic said.
“So do I.” Rouge and Kit said.
“But you’re not off the hook.” Manic said. He motioned to the kitchen. “Ma’s talking to Tom and someone from GUN about dealing with you.”
“I had to tell them about how we met.” Rouge said. “The Queen didn’t seem to really want to charge you with anything other than self defense or some lesser charge on that one since you were technically saving me and they had a longer and more violent rap sheet than you.”
Surge, carrying Cyber, walked in.
Maria grinned. “Aww, you have babies?”
“Yep, four week old twins.” Manic said, sitting down beside Maria.
Surge sat down beside Maria and handed Cyber to her. “Here’s our girl Cyber.”
Maria held Cyber. “Aww, she’s adorable.”
“She really likes you if she’s not complaining.” Manic said. “She usually only lets me hold her, but she finally started to let Surge hold her without me sitting next to her.”
Tom and Aleena walked in.
“Ah, Shadow.” Aleena said. “I’m glad to see you’re alive. Thanks for saving my children.”
Shadow motioned to Sonic. “Would say you owe me for saving Sonic.”
“Hey, I saved your life.” Sonic said, playfully smacking Shadow’s arm.
Aleena smiled and shook her head. “Come now, he’s not that bad.”
“So what am I looking at?” Shadow asked. “Life sentence?”
Maria leaned back in her seat. “I’m not gonna see him again?”
“Well… he’s got to serve a mandatory two years in prison.” Aleena said. “Community service for another year, but that may run consecutively with his prison sentence.”
Maria nodded. “It’s fair, given what Sonia has told me.”
“You can visit him while he’s serving time on the days you visit for NIDS treatments.” Aleena said. “After your release, you can go anywhere you want, but you’re not exactly welcome on Mobius anymore.”
Maria looked at Maddie and Tom.
“That’s definitely something we need to discuss later.” Tom said, looking at Maria and Maddie. He turned back to face Aleena. “What about NIDS treatments?”
“We have the cure for NIDS.” Aleena replied. “Manic had it when he was a baby and he’s completely cured.”
Manic nodded. “My kids didn’t get it from me either.”
Maria squealed. “Oh, thank you so much.” She said, hugging Aleena.
“You’re welcome.” Aleena said. “We can get you started tomorrow.”
“These are rings.” Rouge said, handing Maddie a small pouch. “Be careful with them. Just take one, think of or say where you want to go, then toss it. It’ll take you where you want to go.”
“Just say Mobotropolis palace.” Sonic said. “It’ll take you to our place whenever you want to come over.”
“We better go.” Aleena said.
Maria stepped over and hugged Shadow. “Bye, Shadow. Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you, Maria.” Shadow said.
Aleena got a ring and tossed it.
A portal to the palace opened up.
Aleena, teams Sonic and Manic, and Shadow stepped through the portal.
“You’re still alive, Shadow.” Maddie said, leaning into Shadow’s face. “Sonic got you here in time.”
Shadow slowly sat up. “Great, he’ll never let me live this down.” He muttered.
“You got that right.” Sonic said, hopping off the chair he was sitting on.
Shadow sighed.

Tails walked in. “Sonia and Maria want to know if they can come in yet.”
Maddie nodded. “Call them in.”
Sonic walked out the open door.
Tails looked at Shadow. “I’m going to get Maria her treatments, don’t worry.”

Sonia and Maria rushed in and hugged Shadow.
“I’m so glad you’re alive.” Sonia said.
“Me too.” Shadow replied.

“I’ll let you three talk.” Maddie said. She left the room with Sonic and Tails.

Maddie stepped in. “Uhm, Maria?” She asked. “Tom called. He said they picked up Gerald and he’ll make arrangements. We’ll stay at your house tonight and help you with your… uh… friends, okay?”
Maria nodded. “Thanks, Maddie.”
Maddie stepped over. “Let me help you up.” She said, helping Shadow. “There you go, buddy. C’mon, we’ll get you your pain meds and we’ll go back to the house.”
Maddie helped Shadow into the computer chair by the desk and wheeled him out.
Sonia, Tails, and Maria followed Maddie out.

Aleena smiled and shook her head. “Come now, he’s not that bad.”

“Just say Mobotropolis palace.” Sonic said. “It’ll take you to our place whenever you want to come over.”
“We better go.” Aleena said.
Maria stepped over and hugged Shadow. “Bye, Shadow. Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you, Maria.” Shadow said.
Aleena got a ring and tossed it.
A portal to the palace opened up.
Aleena, teams Sonic and Manic, and Shadow stepped through the portal.
