Manic and Surge sat on the couch in his family’s living room as Aleena sat down on the recliner.
“So how did you deal with triplets and not lose your mind?” Surge asked. “I can’t even deal with this doll or Kit sometimes. Really, the only thing he does is call me ‘ma’am, which ticks me off.”
“You’ll lose the energy for that one day.” Aleena said. “I lost the energy to correct people when they kept calling Sonic ‘Sanic’ and so did he.”
Manic nodded. “He literally got called Sanic the other day.”
“Anyway, it wasn’t easy.” Aleena said. “Sonic was a handful, always on the move.”
Surge motioned to Manic. “He’s like… I dunno… super dad and I couldn’t even hold the thing right.” He replied. “At least half of it is instinct.”
“Notice how she called it a ‘thing’.” Manic said, leaning against the counter.
Surge sighed exasperatedly. “It’s a doll, Manic.”
“I wouldn’t worry about that unless she does that with an actual baby, Manic.” Aleena said. “Anyway, he had practice with Tails. He wasn’t naturally good at it like Sonic and Sonia were.”
Hip started crying.
“Alright, let’s get started.” Aleena said.
*
Surge successfully changed Hip’s diaper. “How was that?”
“Awesome.” Manic replied. He hugged Surge. “I knew you could do it.”
“You’re way too happy about this.” Surge said, rolling her eyes upward.
Sonic walked into the room. “Yeah, he’s taking it way too seriously.”
“Too bad the project is over tomorrow.” Manic said, picking up Hip.
Surge groaned. “You mean to tell me I went through all of that just for a few hours?” She asked. “I could’ve just waited it out.”
Manic gave Surge a blank stare. “You’re keeping him overnight.” He replied. “Besides, you needed to learn this.”
Aleena stepped into the living room. “I’m gonna start making dinner soon.” She said, brushing her bangs out of her eyes. “Surge, are you gonna stay for dinner?”
Manic walked out of the room.
“Manic?” Aleena asked.
“He’s mad at Surge because she’s mad she went through all that just for a few more hours.” Sonic said.
Surge picked up Hip. “I’m sorry, but this isn’t as fun as he seems to think it is.”
“No one said it was fun.” Aleena said, shaking her head. “It’s a little easier to take care of older kids. I know some females prefer older kids to babies.”
Surge shrugged. “Yeah, at least they’re a little more fun.” She replied. “You can play video games or have a nerf gun battle with them.”
Manic stepped back into the room. “I overheard you all.” He said. “I totally understand, babe. I kinda feel the same way.”
“So we’re good?” Surge asked.
Manic nodded. “Are you staying for dinner?”
“I would, but I should get back to Kit.” Surge said. “It’s movie night and I’ve bailed on the last several movie nights. He’s begging me to watch some movie called Birdemic.”
“Oh, boy.” Aleena muttered as she left the room.
“She watched it with us and she was pretty ticked off with Manic for a week.” Sonic said, motioning toward Aleena.
Manic handed Hip to Surge. “Make sure to watch the Rifftrax version of it.” He said. “You’ll thank us later.”
Manic walked Surge to the door. “I’ll drive you home.”
*
Surge hugged and kissed Manic, then headed back inside.
Kit set out a plate of nachos and tacos. “Hey, how’d it go?”
“Good.” Surge said, sitting down. “Manic said we should watch the Rifftrax version of that movie.”
Kit shrugged. “Probably because it’s the only one you can find on Tubi.” He replied. He sat down beside Surge, who was bottle feeding Hip. He picked up the remote. “You two are cute together, ma’am.”
Surge sighed.
“I’m sorry.” Kit said, pinning his ears back.
“No, I’m sorry for lashing out at you.” Surge replied. “You don’t deserve it.”
Kit hugged Surge.
“Uh… you don’t have to… thanks, Drippy.” Surge said, ruffling Kit’s fur. “Now let’s watch the movie.”
Kit moved back to his seat and turned the tv on.
