Tails, Uncle Chuck, and Aleena stood beside Sonia as she laid flowers on Sonic’s grave.
Aleena wiped her eyes. “Happy birthday, baby.”
“Happy birthday, big bro.” Sonia said softly.
“Happy birthday, Sonny boy.” Uncle Chuck said.
“Happy birthday.” Tails said, voice breaking.
Sonia motioned for Tails to come over.
Tails stepped closed, then knelt down beside Sonia.
“We miss you.” Sonia said. “Manic would’ve been with us, but… he’s made some mistakes. He’s getting better. You’d be so proud of him.”
Aleena and Uncle Chuck nodded.
After about half an hour, the group started walking back to the car.
Tails wiped his eyes.
“Would you like to have dinner with us?” Aleena asked.
“I can hang out for a few minutes.” Tails replied. “I’m almost finished with my own medallion. I think I’m ready to be a hero like Sonic. I’ve gone through all the training Shadow and Knux put me through and passed.”
“Good for you, little bro.” Sonia said, patting Tails on his back. “Sonic would be so proud.”
“I wish he could see it though.” Tails replied.
“I’m sure he knows somehow.” Sonia said.
Tails grinned.
“Need me to come up with a name for you?” Sonia asked.
“I think I’m just gonna use my real name.” Tails replied. “No one knew it except you all, Manic, and Sonic. I legally changed my name anyway.”
“Cool.” Sonia said. “I’m proud of you, Tails. It’s gonna be so cool working with you.”
“Just be careful, Tails.” Aleena said.
“Of course, mom.” Tails replied.
Aleena snapped her fingers. “Oh, good news, Sonia.” She said, “I got a letter from Manic saying he’ll get out soon. There’s supposed to be a retrial, he’s getting time served for his testimony.”
“Against the Guild?” Sonia asked.
“I suppose so.” Aleena replied. “I can’t think of anything else he’d testify against.”
