Surge woke up inside her boss Dr. Starline’s lab. Her body ached a little, but not as bad as she thought she’d feel after falling out of the top floor of the penthouse.
That meant the pain management implant was working again.
Surge shuddered as she remembered gathering up what little strength she had to drag herself back here after the fall. It was mostly a blur and she couldn’t believe she made it back to the lab.
“At least I made it.” Surge muttered. “That’s a relief.”
Surge slowly sat up, seeing an aqua fennec sitting on the computer chair in the corner.
The fennec looked up and grinned. “She’s awake, doctor!”
“Coming in a minute.” Dr. Starline called.
The fennec looked at Surge. “Good to see you awake, ma’am.” He said. “You’ve been out for a few days.”
“That long, huh?” Surge asked. “Don’t call me that, my name is Surge.”
“Oh, sorry, Surge.” The fennec replied. “My name is Kit.”
Dr. Starline marched in. “Thank you, Kit.” He said. He looked at Surge. “You’re lucky. The plates protecting your vital organs were severely damaged. Your pain med distributor was worn out anyway, but it got crushed from the fall. I’m not sure how you made it here as quickly as you did or at all, actually.”
“Thanks for fixing me.” Surge replied. “So… did we get ya enough money to cover the expenses or do you need me and the kid to get you some more money?”
“I’ll need more than that.” Dr. Starline said. “You can still be of use to me in a new disguise.”
“Then get Kit to do it and I’ll pay you.” Surge replied. “I’m done with this nonsense.”
“Oh, I’m afraid not.” Dr. Starline said. “Follow me.”
Surge slid off the table. “Wait, where’s Manic?”
“I’ll explain it to you.” Dr. Starline said. “Now, follow me.”
Surge followed Dr. Starline into another room in the lab.
In the center of the room was something like cryogenic tubes.
Surge stepped closer to the tube, seeing two tiny hedgehogs or tenrecs, one in each tube. “What the heck are you doing to them?”
“Keeping them alive.” Dr. Starline replied. “Do they look familiar to you?”
Surge gave Dr. Starline a blank stare. “Why would they look familiar to me?”
“Look at them closer.” Dr. Starline said.
Surge reluctantly looked at them, knowing it was pointless to argue. She raised an eyebrow. “Why do they look like Manic?”
“Well, he was your… whatever he was to you.” Dr. Starline said, booting up a nearby computer. “I don’t make it a habit to pry in my lackeys’ lives.”
Surge groaned. “What does this have to do with me?!” She yelled. “Could ya stop this stupid game and tell me directly what the heck is going on?!”
Dr. Starline turned to face Surge. “Alright, since you’re too dense to add two and two.”
Surge narrowed her eyes.
“So when you somehow managed to drag yourself back here, I immediately ran the diagnostic scan on you.” Dr. Starline said. “It picked up on the fact you were pregnant. It was pretty early for you to tell, I suppose.”
Surge glanced at the tubes. “Apparently….”
Dr. Starline tapped a button on his watch. “Here’s the files.”
A small tablet hovered over to Surge.
Surge silently read the files.
“You’re lucky you didn’t lose the brats.” Dr. Starline said. “The only thing protecting them was a little wall of cyborganics and your pain med distributor wasn’t working.”
Surge nudged the tablet away, then slid her shirt slightly up. She noticed a shaved strip of fur on her abdomen and a long scar. “I know there’s a catch somewhere.”
“You should be thanking me.” Dr. Starline said. “They’re all that’s left of Manic.”
Surge froze. “He’s dead?”
Dr. Starline sent the tablet over to Surge again. “Killed by his sister.” He said, shaking his head. “Well, technically, she let him fall out the window when he fell trying to save you.”
Surge exhaled slowly. “What do you need?”
“For you to take down Sonia and her crew with Kit’s help.” Dr. Starline replied. “For that, I’ll give you your freedom. You can take your brats as soon as they’re ready to leave and go wherever you want.”
Surge looked at the twins, then nodded. “It’s a deal.”
“I’ll let you and Kit get started tomorrow.” Dr. Starline said. “I have some work to do and you need to get the grief out of your system before you go out.”
Dr. Starline left the room.
Surge sat down beside the tubes. She tried to pull her knees to her chest and hissed in pain. She stretched her legs out and rubbed her arms as she fought back tears.
After finally realizing she was pretty much alone in the lab, she broke down in tears.
