Sonia sat down on one of the chairs near Tails’ desk. “So what did you have to show me?”
Tails handed Sonia a new medallion. “Here you go.” He replied. “I’ve upgraded it to make your spin attack more powerful. Now, there may be a glitch that makes it activate with your spin. “If so, let me know immediately. I can fix it.”
“Maybe I should carry my old medallion with me.” Sonia said, looking at the medallion.
“Or we could just test it now.” Tails replied. He sipped his coffee. “Sorry, I’m tired.”
Sonia put the necklace on and spun around.
The medallion immediately started glowing a reddish pink color.
Sonia transformed into a pinkish-lavender color. Her head fur grew out.
Tails’ jaw dropped. “You look like Mom.”
Sonia noticed her reflection. “Oh….”
“I need to fix that.” Tails said. “Spin again to shut it off.”
Sonia spun around, going back to normal. She took off the necklace. “Okay, I like the transformation’s look though.”
“It should stay the same.” Tails replied. He set the medallion on his desk. “Okay….”
Rouge flew in. “Hey, we need you.” She said, trying to catch her breath. “Something’s happening.”
“Let me get my medallion.” Sonia replied.
Rouge tossed Sonia her medallion. “Shadow got it for you. Meet us downtown.”
Sonia put on her medallion and activated it.
“I’ll catch up to you all in a minute.” Tails said as Sonia and Rouge flew out. He sighed as he looked at the old picture of himself and Sonic in Green Hills. “I won’t let you down, big bro.”
Tails got up and hurried over to his safe. He placed Sonia’s new medallion inside, then grabbed his own medallion. He activated it by pressing his thumb on the password pad.
Tails turned a glowing pale yellow with silver eyes. He flew out of the workshop.

Tails arrived downtown as everyone else was in the middle of fighting an army of robots.
Sonia fired a blast at one of the robots.
Shadow slammed another robot into the wall.
Tails hit a small drone with one of his tails.
Sonia, Mindy, and Aleena powered down as they realized the robots were defeated.
Tails powered down as well. “That’s odd.”
Mindy pointed at a mysterious hovercraft flying away. “Who’s that?”
“Never seen it before.” Shadow said.
Rouge did a double take at one of the streets. “Oh, Shadow- Nevermind.”
“What was it?” Sonia asked.
“There were a couple of flashes that went down the street and disappeared.” Rouge replied.
“We can check GUN security footage.” Shadow said, picking up Sonia. “Meet us at our house.”

Shadow sat at the computer desk in his and Sonia’s study as everyone gathered around him.
Shadow pulled up the footage. “Hmm… that’s interesting.” He said. “The hovercraft is powered by Chaos Energy. That’s heavily regulated.”
“But Tails and Uncle Chuck have access to it.” Sonia replied. “So did Sonic.”
“Sonic was given exceptions like I was.” Shadow said. “Tails and Uncle Chuck have permits.”
“So I’m not supposed to have the medallion?” Sonia asked.
“You, Aleena, and Mindy are given the exemption Sonic was given.” Shadow replied.
“So who is this guy?” Sonia asked.
“It’s someone who worked for GUN.” Shadow replied. “His robots are following a GUN tactic program. It’s a false flag attack. He’s used this as a distraction.”
Rouge pulled her phone out. “I’m checking the news for clues.”
Mindy squinted at the screen. “Who are those two figures in the back?” She asked. She pointed at the left side of the screen. “There.”
Tails zoomed the picture in, landing on the smaller figure first. “That’s a fennec.” He said. “I’ll check the GUN database for a match in a minute.”
Tails panned the image to the next figure.
Everyone except Shadow and Rouge gasped.
“Surge?” Sonia asked. “How? She’s dead.”
“Maybe it’s an android duplicate.” Tails replied.
“Gerald Robotnik had quite a few androids of Shadow, didn’t he?” Mindy asked. “So maybe someone made an android of her.”
Rouge and Shadow exchanged glances.
“Cat’s out of the bag, hon.” Rouge said.
Sonia looked at Rouge. “What?”
“When GUN investigated her crimes, we didn’t find her body.” Shadow replied. “We saw a dent in the pavement, some oil and blood, but nothing else.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Sonia asked.
“Because we were given orders not to talk about it.” Shadow replied. “It either had to do with some other investigation or to keep from causing a panic.”
“Don’t tell anyone we said it.” Rouge added.
“Maybe Manic will know about this.” Tails said.
Rouge shook her head. “He wouldn’t be going to counseling in prison for grief if he did.” She replied. “We can access his files. He’s there because he’s grieving for Sonic, but he mostly talks about Surge and breaks down every time he mentions her.”
“It’s worth a shot to ask him.” Tails said.
“You check in, we’ll scan the news and do damage control.” Shadow replied. “Meet us back here.”
“Sure.” Tails said.

~meanwhile~
Surge walked back into hers and Manic’s little room.
Manic’s drums were set up in the corner next to his old hoverboard and recording equipment.
Manic’s old black undershirt he used for pajamas was still draped over the back of his computer chair.
Surge picked up the shirt.
The scent of Manic’s citrus soap still clung to the shirt.
Surge sat down on the bed, hugging his shirt.
She glanced at the framed drawings he had made her for birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries.
She remembered she had recorded some videos of him and pulled her phone out of her pocket.
Her phone had died.
Surge plugged the phone into its charger, then got up and left the room to check on the babies.
