Sonic woke up as sunlight shone through his bedroom window, into his face, and stared at the ceiling.

He couldn’t believe his brother wouldn’t come barging into his room to aggravate him into getting up or waking him up by playing the drums again.

It used to annoy him enough to race into Manic’s room and punch him in the arm while ranting that he was trying to sleep, to which Manic would laugh it off.

He’d give anything to hear his brother’s voice or those drums again.

“Is it always gonna hurt to think about him?” Sonic thought.

“Sonic?” Manic called.

Sonic sighed. “Now I’m hallucinating.” He muttered under his breath.

“Bro?” Manic called. “Dude, did you sneak out for a run last night? It’s ten in the morning; get your butt up.”

The door creaked open.

Manic walked in. “Dude, you’re awake?” He asked. “Are ya sick? Why didn’t you answer me?”

Sonic stared wide-eyed at Manic.

Manic sat down on the bed at Sonic’s feet. “Sonic? What’s wrong?”

“Manic… how… how are you here?” Sonic asked.

Manic furrowed his brow. “Uh, I live here too, bro.” He replied. “Did you have a nightmare?”

Sonic shrugged. “Uh… maybe…?”

“I think you did.” Manic said. “You’re acting weird.”

“It seemed so real.” Sonic said. “I thought it was real, but….”

“What happened?” Manic asked.

Sonic pulled his knees to his chest. “You shot yourself.” He replied. “Mom found you.”

Manic drew a shaky breath. “Oh, man.” He said softly. “Why?”

“‘Cause Surge was killed in a car wreck like a year before.” Sonic said.

Manic sighed. “I mean, I would’ve been beyond devastated if she had died in that wreck.” He said, running his hand through his spines. “Man, I hate to think I’d get that lost in depression if she had. I’d never do that to my family.”

Sonic looked at Manic. “Wait, she’s still alive?”

“Yeah.” Manic said. “A Shadow android happened to be in the area and saved her life. She was in the hospital for over a month and I stayed with her, remember? You brought us food a lot and we watched the Matrix together one of those times. You sat with me at Tails’ workshop when he was giving her cyborganics so she could walk again. You helped me take her to physical therapy just two weeks ago. Don’t you remember any of that?”

Now that Sonic thought about it, he did vaguely remember sitting at the hospital and bringing in food on a few occasions. He remembered watching Manic pace around as he waited for Surge to get cyborganics. He could remember complaining about traffic while Surge was acting like Sonic was hers and Manic’s personal chauffeur and Manic laughed hysterically to the point he could barely breathe.

However, this dream or whatever it was seemed so real. He swore he went to Manic’s funeral yesterday.

“Sonic?” Manic asked.

“I kinda remember all of that, but I’d swear that she died last year and you died a couple of days ago.” Sonic replied.

Manic shrugged. “Must’ve been one heck of a realistic dream.” He said. “I’ve had some like that too, but yours is on a whole other level.”

“Yeah.” Sonic replied. He hugged Manic. “Please don’t ever do that.”

“I won’t, I promise.” Manic said.

“I love you, bro.” Sonic said, patting Manic on the back.

“Love you too.” Manic replied.

Aleena stepped into the room. “Sonic, are you- sweetie, what’s wrong?”

“He had a really bad nightmare.” Manic said.

Aleena walked in and ruffled Sonic’s spines. “Aww, do you need to talk about it?”

Sonic finally pulled away.

“He dreamed I died two days ago.” Manic said.

Aleena sat down beside Sonic. “Ooh, I’m sorry I asked.” She replied. “I know that wouldn’t be something you want to talk about.”

Sonic slowly nodded.

“Your brother is okay.” Aleena said, hugging Sonic. “It’s just a nightmare.”

“How do I know this isn’t a dream?” Sonic asked.

Manic shoved Sonic off the bed.

“Ow!” Sonic cried.

Aleena flinched. “Manic!”

“What the heck was that for?” Sonic asked.

“You ever had those dreams where you’re falling and you jolt awake before you hit the ground?” Manic asked.

Sonic sat up. “Yeah…?”

“You’re still here, wide awake.” Manic replied. “You’re not dreaming this, bro. I’m still alive.”

Sonic got up. “You could’ve pinched me instead.”

Manic shrugged. “Oops.”

Sonic weakly punched Manic in the arm. “It’s fine, I’m glad you’re still here.”

Aleena got up. “Breakfast is ready and your friends are here.” She said, walking out of the room.

Sonic helped Manic up and dragged him to the kitchen.

Shadow, Sally, and Surge were at the table while Kit, Sonia, and Tails were helping Aleena put the plates on the table.

“I hope I didn’t keep everyone waiting.” Sonic said.

“Kit, Tails, and I just got here.” Surge replied. “Tails had to finish my upgrades.”

“Upgrades?” Sonic asked.

Manic gave Sonic a look. “The cyborganics, bro? Remember?”

“It’s how I’m able to walk.” Surge added.

“Uh… man, it must’ve been a long week.” Sonic said, sitting down. “I’m not thinking straight.”

“He had a bad nightmare.” Manic said, patting his brother on the shoulder. “He dreamed Surge had died in the accident and I killed myself after it.”

Sonia gasped softly while Kit cringed.

Surge hugged Manic while Sally hugged Sonic.

Tails and Shadow exchanged glances.

Aleena shuddered. “Oh, sweetie, I’m so sorry you had a nightmare.” She said, ruffling Sonic’s spines. “Maybe you shouldn’t eat spicy food at night.”

“Guess not.” Sonic replied.

Shadow discreetly texted Tails to let him know not to tell Sonic otherwise and to spread the word to Amy.

Tails nodded.
