Sonic walked into Tails’ workshop. “I finally figured it out.” He said. “I feel stupid that I didn’t think of it sooner.”
Tails slid out from under his plane. “What?”
“That nightmare was a bunch of memories from the old timeline or whatever.” Sonic replied. He sat down next to Tails. “Shadow went back and saved Surge, which prevented Manic from…. I’m sure you helped him with that. You’re the only one with access to the time stones.”
Tails nodded. “It was his idea.”
“I didn’t realize he was actually close friends with Manic.” Sonic said. “I thought he tolerated him for Sonia’s sake too.”
“We all missed Manic and wanted him back.” Tails replied. “But watching you break down over it. I mean, I know Sonia, Mom, and I desperately missed him, it’s just… I’d swear you two have that identical twin thing going in spite of not being identical.”
Sonic hugged Tails. “Thanks, little bro.”
“You don’t have to thank me.” Tails replied. “He’s my brother too.”
Sonic let go. “I know.” He said. “I gotta go. Don’t forget about the triplets’ birthday party later.”
“I was about to take a shower.” Tails replied. “See you at Manic’s.”
“See you.” Sonic said. He raced off.

Sonic sat beside Manic as they watched their kids and Shadow and Sonia’s daughter Maria playing in Manic’s backyard.
“I can’t believe they’re seven already.” Manic said. “Doesn’t seem that long ago that they were born. Or that we were seven.”
Sonic nodded. “Yeah, it’s amazing.”
“Manic, can you help me with the cake?” Surge called.
Manic got up. “Yeah, hold on.” He said, walking back to the house.
Shadow, holding his and Sonia’s two year old son Terios, sat down next to Sonic.
“Thanks, Shadow.” Sonic said.
“What?” Shadow asked.
“Tails told me.” Sonic replied. “After I told him I figured out what happened, that is.”
“It’s nothing.” Shadow said. “I didn’t want to see the family crumble.”
“You care about Manic.” Sonic replied. “We all grew up together, it’s understandable.”
“That and I know what it’s like to lose someone.” Shadow said. “Watching you… I’ve seen that. I’ve been there and I don’t want anyone to feel that pain if I can help it. I’d go back and save Maria if I could.”
Sonic nodded. “Thanks again.”
“Cake’s ready.” Manic called.
Sonic got up and raced off.
Shadow got up and carried his sleeping toddler over to the rest of the family.
