Four year old Manic quietly listened to music on his little cd player as he shuffled alongside his foster mom Breezie as she walked him to his preschool class at Mobotropolis elementary school. He didn’t exactly want to go to school today as he knew he would be shipped off to a new home and school next week.

Rosie, his woodchuck teacher, knelt down to Manic’s eye level. “Hey, sweetie.”

Manic eased behind his Breezie.

Breezie glanced at Manic. “He’s a little anxious this morning.” She replied. “He found out he’s moving to another foster home next week.”

“Aww, I’m sorry, Manic.” Rosie said.

“Try to let him listen to his music for as long as you can.” Breezie said. “It helps calm him down.”

“Of course.” Rosie replied.

Breezie knelt down to Manic’s eye level. “Be a good boy, sweetie.” She said, smiling. “I’ll see you after school.”

Manic nodded. “Bye.”

Breezie left the room.

Manic sniffled and wiped tears out of his eyes.

The cd player’s batteries died.

Manic sighed and slid his headphones off. He stuffed his cd player into his backpack.

“You don’t have to shut off your music yet.” Rosie said.

“The batteries died.” Manic replied. “I’m okay now, I guess.”

“Do you want to talk about anything?” Rosie asked.

Manic sat on the floor. “No one wants me.” He said, hanging his head. “I haven’t been adopted and I never get to stay in the same house for long.”

Rosie sat down across from Manic. “Aww, sweetie, I’m sure someone will adopt you one day.”

Manic wiped his eyes again and drew a shaky breath. “My own Ma and Dad didn’t want me.” He cried. “I heard my caseworker say they abandoned me. No one loves me.”

“You’re loved, Manic.” Rosie said. “We all love you.”

Manic looked up. “Can you adopt me? Please?”

“I’ll see what I can do.” Rosie replied.

Manic half smiled. “Thanks.” He muttered. He had heard this dozens of times before. He knew that usually meant no one wanted to adopt him, but was too nice to tell him otherwise.

More students came in, including Manic’s best friend Shadow.

Shadow took his seat beside Manic. “Sorry, Manic.”

“Your grandpa won’t adopt me?” Manic asked.

“He wants to, but we can’t take you in right now.” Shadow replied. “My sister is sick and it’s a lot of work to take care of her. He hasn’t even had time for me, so he definitely hasn’t had time to try to go through the process of adopting you.”

Manic nodded. “I understand.” He said. “I hope your sister gets better soon.”

“Thanks.” Shadow replied.

“Okay, children, I hope you gave this some thought.” Rosie said. “Remember when I asked you all to think about what you wanted to do when you grow up?”

“Yes, Miss Rosie.” The children replied.

Manic raised his little hand, hoping he’d be called to speak first.

“Okay, let’s start with Manic.” Rosie said. “Manic, sweetie, do you know what you want to be when you grow up?”

“A rock star.” Manic replied.

~eight years later, on Emerald island~

Twelve year old Sonic and eight year old Tails were led to the Emerald palace by an owl named Longclaw.

Longclaw gently patted Sonic and Tails on their backs with her wings. “I’m sorry, children.” She said softly. “You’ll be safe here, I promise. Your uncle Chuck arranged for you two to live here if anything happened to him.”

Sonic and Tails nodded.

The palace doors opened.

Sonic and Tails stared wide eyed at the courtyard.

Mosaic stones made up the walkway around the gardens.

A lavender female hedgehog and her daughter (a dark pink hedgehog) stood on the steps of the marble porch.

Longclaw led Sonic and Tails to the hedgehogs. She bowed. “Your highness, Sonic and Tails have arrived.”

Sonic and Tails exchanged glances.

“We’re being adopted by Queen Aleena?” Sonic asked.

“Yes, my dear children.” Aleena said, kneeling down to their eye level. “We have prepared your rooms for you, I hope it’s to your liking.”

“I’m sure it will be, your highness.” Tails replied.

Aleena laughed. “You two can call me mom.” She said, straightening up. She motioned to the other hedgehog. “Now, this is your sister Sonia.”

“Nice to meet you.” Sonia said.

“Sonia, sweetie, you can show the boys to their rooms.” Aleena said. “You three have the day off and class will begin on Monday.”

“Yes, Mom.” Sonia, Sonic, and Tails replied.

Sonia led Sonic and Tails inside.

Sonic and Tails looked around at the beautiful paintings and ancient tapestries adorning the walls.

Their footsteps echoed on the marble tile.

“So is it true that the Chaos emeralds are here?” Tails asked.

“Yes, but the Master emerald is a legend as far as we know.” Sonia replied. “Anyway, you two will be trained in the ways of the guardians on Monday. Longclaw will be your teacher.”

Sonic shrugged. “Alright.”

“Sounds good.” Tails said.
