Ten years had passed since Sonic and Tails had been taken to the Emerald palace.

Tails did well at the palace. He worked on new technology to his heart’s content and was able to study numerous textbooks for as long as he wanted.

Sonic, on the other hand, was restless. He hated the palace. He guarded the emeralds’ shrine with Sonia every other day until night time when Longclaw settled in and set the traps before going to sleep.

It was a prison to him. He was only allowed to go out as far as the garden, but couldn’t run in it. The giant exercise wheel Tails made him just wasn’t enough. He tried to reason that at least he could play guitar and sing, but that was only a small comfort.

It didn’t help matters that they had the local vendors deliver food and supplies to the palace instead of sending someone out to pick anything up.

Sonic groaned and patted his foot, thinking of the days when uncle Chuck took him and Tails to the chili dog stand on the weekends after a day at the park.

Sonia’s singing jarred Sonic out of his thoughts.

“You’re bored too?” Sonic asked.

“A little.” Sonia admitted.

“So let’s go out for a bit.” Sonic said.

“We have our duties.” Sonia replied.

“We never have threats.” Sonic groaned.

“But we could.” Sonia said.

“Come on, I’m dying for a chili dog.” Sonic replied. “I’m the fastest thing alive. I’ll get us there and back before Mom knows we’re gone. Don’t you want to see the outside world for once in your life?”

Sonia nodded. “Alright, I’m in.”

Sonic picked up Sonia and raced out of the palace.

An hour later, Sonic, carrying Sonia, skidded to a halt at the broken gates.

Sonia gasped.

“Oh, no.” Sonic said. He hurried to the shrine, then set down Sonia.

Aleena and Tails stood near the shattered stands for the emeralds.

Tails sobbed into a handkerchief.

Aleena noticed Sonic and Sonia. “Where were you?”

“Town.” Sonic said. “There was a long line at the chili dog stand. What happened?”

“The echidna tribe raided the palace and stole the emeralds.” Aleena replied. “Longclaw was killed along with nearly all of the echidnas. One got away.”

Sonia sobbed as she hugged Sonic.

Sonic fought back tears.

“Why did you leave?” Aleena asked.

Sonia tried to regain her composure. “Sonic said we wouldn’t be gone long.”

“I’m sorry, it’s my fault.” Sonic said, hanging his head.

“Don’t be too harsh on them.” The Oracle of Delphius said as he shuffled into the room. “They’re still pretty young.”

Aleena looked at the Oracle. “How much trouble are we in?”

“We’re in grave danger if we don’t recover the Chaos emeralds before the lone echidna finds them.” The Oracle said.

“Wait, find them?” Sonic asked. “Didn’t the echidna take them?”

“There was a power explosion.” The Oracle said. “The emeralds have scattered. I’m afraid finding them won’t be easy.”

“We’ll do it.” Sonic replied. “I have to fix this before someone else gets killed.”

“Then go, you two.” Aleena said. “You’re the only ones I can send since you have innate powers. Take this as your chance to redeem yourselves.”

“Okay.” Sonic agreed. “But where do we go?”

Tails stepped forward. “I can help them track them down.”

“Then go quickly.” Aleena said.

Tails stuck his handkerchief back into his hoodie pocket. “Let’s get some equipment from my room first.” He said, leading the way to his room.

Sonic and Sonia followed them.

~Meanwhile in Mobotropolis~

Manic walked off the boardwalk, stepping onto the warm sand of Mobotropolis beach. He sighed as he ran his hand through his spines.

He had tried to apply for a job at every business along the boardwalk and still couldn’t get a job. He only had ten dollars in his pocket, definitely not enough money to buy food for his wife and three year old triplets.

“At least I can pick up food at the soup kitchen.” Manic muttered under his breath. “Can’t believe they kicked us out of the shelter. Did they really expect us to completely get back on our feet in two months?”

Manic saw a flicker of light a foot away from him and glanced over at the source.

A large pearl white gem was laying on the beach, partially covered by sand.

Manic ran over and picked up the gem.

The diamond cut gem fit perfectly in his hand and seemed to glow.

“This is the weirdest diamond I’ve ever seen.” Manic said under his breath. “I bet it’s worth a lot of money.”

He started to walk away when a flash of light appeared in front of him.
